Download or read book Cellular Spaces Null Spaces and Homotopy Localization written by Emmanuel Farjoun and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph we give an exposition of some recent development in homotopy theory. It relates to advances in periodicity in homotopy localization and in cellular spaces. The notion of homotopy localization is treated quite generally and encompasses all the known idempotent homotopy functors. It is applied to K-theory localizations, to Morava-theories, to Hopkins-Smith theory of types. The method of homotopy colimits is used heavily. It is written with an advanced graduate student in topology and research homotopy theorist in mind.

Book Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and Related Topics

Download or read book Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and Related Topics written by Yves Félix and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and Related Topics, which was held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, in Germany, from April 5-11, 2009. This volume contains fourteen original research articles covering a broad range of topics that include: localization and rational homotopy theory, evaluation subgroups, free loop spaces, Whitehead products, spaces of algebraic maps, gauge groups, loop groups, operads, and string topology. In addition to reporting on various topics in the area, this volume is supposed to facilitate the exchange of ideas within Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces, and promote cross-fertilization between Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and other areas. With these latter aims in mind, this volume includes a survey article which, with its extensive bibliography, should help bring researchers and graduate students up to speed on activity in this field as well as a problems list, which is an expanded and edited version of problems discussed in sessions held at the conference. The problems list is intended to suggest directions for future work.

Book Simplicial Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Simplicial Homotopy Theory written by Paul G. Goerss and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the modern era of algebraic topology, simplicial methods have been used systematically and effectively for both computation and basic theory. With the development of Quillen's concept of a closed model category and, in particular, a simplicial model category, this collection of methods has become the primary way to describe non-abelian homological algebra and to address homotopy-theoretical issues in a variety of fields, including algebraic K-theory. This book supplies a modern exposition of these ideas, emphasizing model category theoretical techniques. Discussed here are the homotopy theory of simplicial sets, and other basic topics such as simplicial groups, Postnikov towers, and bisimplicial sets. The more advanced material includes homotopy limits and colimits, localization with respect to a map and with respect to a homology theory, cosimplicial spaces, and homotopy coherence. Interspersed throughout are many results and ideas well-known to experts, but uncollected in the literature. Intended for second-year graduate students and beyond, this book introduces many of the basic tools of modern homotopy theory. An extensive background in topology is not assumed.

Book Localization of Nilpotent Groups and Spaces

Download or read book Localization of Nilpotent Groups and Spaces written by Peter Hilton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North-Holland Mathematics Studies, 15: Localization of Nilpotent Groups and Spaces focuses on the application of localization methods to nilpotent groups and spaces. The book first discusses the localization of nilpotent groups, including localization theory of nilpotent groups, properties of localization in N, further properties of localization, actions of a nilpotent group on an abelian group, and generalized Serre classes of groups. The book then examines homotopy types, as well as mixing of homotopy types, localizing H-spaces, main (pullback) theorem, quasifinite nilpotent spaces, localization of nilpotent complexes, and nilpotent spaces. The manuscript takes a look at the applications of localization theory, including genus and H-spaces, finite H-spaces, and non-cancellation phenomena. The publication is a vital source of data for mathematicians and researchers interested in the localization of nilpotent groups and spaces.

Book More Concise Algebraic Topology

Download or read book More Concise Algebraic Topology written by J. P. May and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With firm foundations dating only from the 1950s, algebraic topology is a relatively young area of mathematics. There are very few textbooks that treat fundamental topics beyond a first course, and many topics now essential to the field are not treated in any textbook. J. Peter May’s A Concise Course in Algebraic Topology addresses the standard first course material, such as fundamental groups, covering spaces, the basics of homotopy theory, and homology and cohomology. In this sequel, May and his coauthor, Kathleen Ponto, cover topics that are essential for algebraic topologists and others interested in algebraic topology, but that are not treated in standard texts. They focus on the localization and completion of topological spaces, model categories, and Hopf algebras. The first half of the book sets out the basic theory of localization and completion of nilpotent spaces, using the most elementary treatment the authors know of. It makes no use of simplicial techniques or model categories, and it provides full details of other necessary preliminaries. With these topics as motivation, most of the second half of the book sets out the theory of model categories, which is the central organizing framework for homotopical algebra in general. Examples from topology and homological algebra are treated in parallel. A short last part develops the basic theory of bialgebras and Hopf algebras.

Book Homotopy Theoretic Methods in Group Cohomology

Download or read book Homotopy Theoretic Methods in Group Cohomology written by William G. Dwyer and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists essentially of notes which were written for an Advanced Course on Classifying Spaces and Cohomology of Groups. The course took place at the Centre de Recerca Mathematica (CRM) in Bellaterra from May 27 to June 2, 1998 and was part of an emphasis semester on Algebraic Topology. It consisted of two parallel series of 6 lectures of 90 minutes each and was intended as an introduction to new homotopy theoretic methods in group cohomology. The first part of the book is concerned with methods of decomposing the classifying space of a finite group into pieces made of classifying spaces of appropriate subgroups. Such decompositions have been used with great success in the last 10-15 years in the homotopy theory of classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and p-compact groups in the sense of Dwyer and Wilkerson. For simplicity the emphasis here is on finite groups and on homological properties of various decompositions known as centralizer resp. normalizer resp. subgroup decomposition. A unified treatment of the various decompositions is given and the relations between them are explored. This is preceeded by a detailed discussion of basic notions such as classifying spaces, simplicial complexes and homotopy colimits.

Book Algebraic Methods in Unstable Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Algebraic Methods in Unstable Homotopy Theory written by Joseph Neisendorfer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most modern and thorough treatment of unstable homotopy theory available. The focus is on those methods from algebraic topology which are needed in the presentation of results, proven by Cohen, Moore, and the author, on the exponents of homotopy groups. The author introduces various aspects of unstable homotopy theory, including: homotopy groups with coefficients; localization and completion; the Hopf invariants of Hilton, James, and Toda; Samelson products; homotopy Bockstein spectral sequences; graded Lie algebras; differential homological algebra; and the exponent theorems concerning the homotopy groups of spheres and Moore spaces. This book is suitable for a course in unstable homotopy theory, following a first course in homotopy theory. Book Noncommutative Localization in Algebra and Topology

Download or read book Noncommutative Localization in Algebra and Topology written by Andrew Ranicki and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noncommutative localization is a powerful algebraic technique for constructing new rings by inverting elements, matrices and more generally morphisms of modules. Originally conceived by algebraists (notably P. M. Cohn), it is now an important tool not only in pure algebra but also in the topology of non-simply-connected spaces, algebraic geometry and noncommutative geometry. This volume consists of 9 articles on noncommutative localization in algebra and topology by J. A. Beachy, P. M. Cohn, W. G. Dwyer, P. A. Linnell, A. Neeman, A. A. Ranicki, H. Reich, D. Sheiham and Z. Skoda. The articles include basic definitions, surveys, historical background and applications, as well as presenting new results. The book is an introduction to the subject, an account of the state of the art, and also provides many references for further material. It is suitable for graduate students and more advanced researchers in both algebra and topology.
