Book Foundation Engineering Handbook

Download or read book Foundation Engineering Handbook written by Hsai-Yang Fang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.

Book Assessment of the Unconfined Compressive Strength of a Lime Stabilized Soil by an Abrasion Test

Download or read book Assessment of the Unconfined Compressive Strength of a Lime Stabilized Soil by an Abrasion Test written by M. Arabi and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stabilization by lime, which is frequently carried out to improve the mechanical properties of soils, results from the formation and development of cementitious calcium silicate aluminate hydrate gel. The gel produces interlocking and bonding of the soil particles, hence increasing the strength and abrasion resistance. The proposed method to assess the compressive strength of the existing structure of lime stabilized soil using a simple mechanical abrasion technique, provides an alternative means by which the strength characteristics can be assessed. The advantages of employing the abrasion method are (1) the relative ease of specimen collection and preparation as the test is not particularly sensitive to specimen size and shape and (2) the ease of application to existing structures as large-scale mechanical testing equipment would not be required once a calibration chart has been established, and testing could be carried out on site.

Book The Deep Mixing Method

Download or read book The Deep Mixing Method written by Coastal Development Institute Tokyo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing population and increasing urbanization over the past century have made it difficult to locate suitable ground for siting infrastructures in densely populated areas. The Deep Mixing Method (DMM) was developed and put into practice in Japan in 1975 to cope with the headaches of stability and/or excessive settlement in soft soil areas. This method involves using cement and/or lime as a soil stabilizer, added in-situ to deep soils, and has now been adopted not only in Japan but in the USA and other parts of the world as well. This book presents properties of this treated soil method, its various applications, its design and execution, and accumulated research results over the last twenty-five years.

Book Fundamentals of Fibre Reinforced Soil Engineering

Download or read book Fundamentals of Fibre Reinforced Soil Engineering written by Sanjay Kumar Shukla and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as a one-stop reference on fibre-reinforced soils. Over the past 30-35 years, the engineering behaviour of randomly distributed/oriented fibre-reinforced soil, also called simply fibre-reinforced soil, has been investigated in detail by researchers and engineers worldwide. Waste fibres (plastic waste fibres, old tyre fibres, etc.) create disposal and environmental problems. Utilization of such fibres in construction can help resolve these concerns. Research studies and some field applications have shown that the fibres can be utilized in large quantities in geotechnical and civil engineering applications in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner. This book covers a complete description of fibres, their effects when included within a soil or other similar materials such as the fly ash, and their field applications. It gives a detailed view of fibre-reinforced soil engineering. The book will be useful to students, professional, and researchers alike, and can also serve as a text for graduate coursework and professional development programs
