Download or read book Caught by the Collar written by Eugene Akins and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caught by the Collar is an attempt to shed light on the inaccuracies and inefficiencies in the teachings and methodology of teaching in the Pentecostal church. In too many instances, sincere followers of Christ are lost in a quagmire of unanswered questions and errant doctrine. They end up with stunted or stagnant growth and sometimes turn away from Christ altogether. In many cases, these errors and confused teachings can be directly connected with the ideas that the Bible is confusing or contradictory. It is unfortunate that for so many years so many church leaders have either failed to recognize this issue or have intentionally chosen not to address it. In fact, holding on to and continuing to teach ideology and principles that are out of line with scriptures sounds suspiciously like teaching "another gospel," which the Bible specifically speaks against. As a lifetime member of this denomination, Eugene Akins has personally experienced the confusion caused when scripture is misinterpreted, the failure that occurs when scripture is not implemented, and the heartbreak that is precipitated by clergymen who should be in some other line of work. Many of the members of these churches are caught in what they have been told versus what they know and understand. They are caught in traditions and hand-me-down word bites versus the truth of the scriptures, and when the clergy is primarily responsible for all this clutter, church members are caught by the collar.
Download or read book In Wolf Country written by Jim Yuskavitch and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Wolf Country tells the story of the first groups of wolves that emigrated from reintroduced areas in Idaho to re-colonize their former habitat in the Pacific Northwest, how government officials prepared for their arrival, and the battles between the people who welcome them and the people who don’t, set against the backdrop of the ongoing political controversy surrounding wolf populations in the Northern Rockies. The political maneuvering and intense controversy that has defined wolves’ recovery in the West makes this a compelling and timely read.
Download or read book Science under siege written by Peter Banks and published by Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Saturday 29 November 2008, the Royal Zoological Society of NSW held a forum with the theme of Science under siege. As the RZS is a zoological society, zoology under threat became the secondary theme and the basis for selecting speakers. This book records that forum with the papers developed for this book as the written word from the spoken presentations. Papers that were presented as posters are included, as are the edited plenary sessions which featured questions from the floor, with answers and comments encouraged from anyone in the forum. We were delighted that Mark Horstman, from ABC Catalyst, was willing to replace his peripatetic colleague Paul Willis, who was nonetheless very happy to write the foreword. There is a place for such skilled science communicators, we need more of them, and scientists at the lab bench, or in the field, or exploring computer models, or those that have now taken a job in the policy world, need to stay in touch with them. Some might say that the title “Science under siege” seems a bit extreme, but we invite you to examine the evidence as presented in this book. What follows is an edited version of the introductory material that advertised the forum: The title looks dramatic, but if you ask yourself, “is anything killing the science in your area of interest?” you might be surprised that you come up with a point or two. Then ask a wider set of questions, such as: are there any pressures that preclude people from doing good zoology; do either political/budgetary constraints impact on your field; is science in the media a subject that influences the outcome of your work; are there economic impediments to careers in zoology; is the education mix in Australia right for this new century; are the best researchers becoming full-time administrators, or the converse, the poor researchers becoming the administrators; can you place the Australian situation in an international context; are there reduced opportunities for human interactions with the natural world; is the virtual world killing reality; and what are your predictions of the future? To deal with such issues, the Royal Zoological Society of NSW has structured the day to emphasize a range of themes, beginning with identifying the issues, including those that are persistent and those that are emerging, and encompassing palpable hits to science. Direct and indirect hits to science include such matters as the withdrawal of funding, subversion of science, death by 1000 cuts, redirection of funding to fashion issues and using the name of science to justify things that are really not justifiable. The name of science is being dragged down. We need to confront the ever-present problem of ignoring the scientifically accurate for the politically correct. This raises such questions as to whether basic skills in biology are not being acquired because of public concern based on extreme animal rights propaganda. Good science is not optional, but what can be done if you are under siege? The answers include understanding the philosophy of science, the legal perspective and asking what scientists are (or should be) doing. Audience participation will be a central part of this forum. The plenary sessions will address questions raised by the speakers, and the posters, and debate issues and consider options for future directions. It is widely known that it is hard to pull a major paper together on this theme, but so many scientists know of at least one matter that they would like to draw to public attention. So, short contributions are included. Listen to the speakers present some overarching themes or compelling case studies, contribute to the debate on the day, then examine your stance on a variety of these subjects to see whether the day changes your view of this often cryptic aspect of zoology. As editors, we wish to acknowledge the skills of the referees (all papers were refereed by two peers), and the patience of the authors for what has been a long gap between the date of the forum and this publication. By the end of 2008, the Royal Zoological Society of NSW, along with everyone else, was caught by the GFC (Global Financial Crisis) and we simply had to extend the length of the queue for publication. We also reassessed our mode of publication. The Council of the Society voted to publish this production as an ebook, as well as a short print run for formal library deposit, and other essential matters. The ebook is open access to enhance the reach of the papers and the ideas. At the same time, the Royal Zoological Society of NSW signed a contract for a more international mode of access of the publications of the Society, and papers are now available via Metapress. http:// rzsnsw.metapress.com Science remains under siege, in our view, and now we have been alerted to the range of issues it becomes easier to spot the small, irritating closing of options that collectively amount to a denial of science and its relegation to an optional way of looking at the world. During production of this book, this matter became obvious on a number of fronts, which led us to invite the paper by Rosie Cooney and colleagues to defend their science of kangaroo conservation and commercial harvesting from an attack on the science. We also saw that this issue of science under siege needs more airing, and the Royal Zoological Society of NSW is planning its forum for the end of 2012 to take up another strand of this theme by capitalizing on the lifelong insights of scientists under the rubric of “grumpy scientists: an ecological conscience of a nation”. This idea in fact derives directly from the suggestions in the plenary sessions by Nick Holmes and Charley Krebs. We are also concerned for young scientists, with science under siege manifesting often in a failure to create permanent careers for science graduates that advance science itself, and zoology in particular, from flourishing and identifying problems and finding solutions. If we want to conserve the native fauna of Australia, then Australian zoologists will have to be key team members. We contend that to put science under siege, and zoology under threat, we not only further imperil our native wildlife, but also the careers of the small band of specialists that can see the issues, find the problems, implement solutions and evaluate the outcomes. In short, science under siege is not a light matter and no one in this forum thought so. Read on, form an opinion, and speak up and publish your thoughts, your examples and your solutions.

The authors tracked and studied six species of shrew in the Bornean rainforest, and this text descibes their habitat, nesting behaviour, and other facets of their lives.

Download or read book The Collar written by Frank C. Seitz and published by Frank C. Seitz. This book was released on 2006-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing more tragic than a priest in love with a woman. Today's Catholic clergy stagger under momentous burdens: Emotional isolation, depression, alcoholism, pedophilia -- the list goes on. Writhing in a crisis of intimacy, priests struggle with love. They stumble, collared by how to relate to those closest to them -- their colleagues, their women, their God and themselves. Father Christopher Joyce, a middle-aged pastor, looks for the Divine in a hall of distorted mirrors, making God into his own image and likeness. While growing up Catholic, Chris purges peccadilloes in the Confessional, vomits up his First Communion on the steps of St. Anthony's Church, mindlessly memorizes the Baltimore Catechism, and learns about passion in a steamed-over Ford, the locker room and sanitized classrooms where sex is a four-letter word. Tapped to be bishop, Father Christopher wrestles with blending the minister with the man, loving two women at the same time -- Angela and Holy Mother the Church.
Download or read book White Collar Crime in the Shadow Economy written by Petter Gottschalk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book examines the magnitude, causes of, and reactions to white-collar crime, based on the theories and research of those who have uncovered various forms of white-collar crime. It argues that the offenders who are convicted represent only ‘the tip of the iceberg’ of a much greater problem: because white-collar crime is forced to compete with other kinds of financial crime like social security fraud for police resources and so receives less attention and fewer investigations. Gottschalk and Gunnesdal also offer insights into estimation techniques for the shadow economy, in an attempt to comprehend the size of the problem. Holding broad appeal for academics, practitioners in public administration, and government agencies, this innovative study serves as a timely starting point for examining the lack of investigation, detection, and conviction of powerful white-collar criminals.
Download or read book White Collar Crime written by J. Goldstraw-White and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the accounts given by white-collar crime offenders to defend their criminal behaviour in order to preserve their characters and social standing. It is based on in-depth interviews with 41 male and female convicted white-collar offenders, who were still serving their sentences in English prisons. Whilst a number of texts have been written about white-collar crime offenders, very few studies have attempted to approach this by examining the actual reasons and motives for their criminal behaviour directly from the offenders. This book aims to make further progress in this area. By exploring the participants' motives, opportunities and morality, this book will make a key contribution to exploring white-collar crime offenders' perspectives of their crimes. This book not only adds to the academic knowledge in this area, but also helps organizations to consider the strengths of their crime prevention methods and appropriateness of their fraud and security policies.
Download or read book Understanding White Collar Crime written by Petter Gottschalk and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding White-Collar Crime develops the concept of convenience as the main explanation for crime occurrence. Examining all three dimensions of crime—economic, organizational, and behavioral—the book argues that when white-collar crime becomes less convenient, crime rates will go down. By applying convenience theory to an empirical sample of convicted white-collar criminals, the text teaches criminal justice students and ethics and compliance practitioners to identify and understand how opportunity affects real-world criminal situations. Internal investigations of white-collar crime are discussed, and corporate social responsibility against white-collar crime is emphasized. Understanding White-Collar Crime: A Convenience Perspective examines not only the theories behind white-collar crime, but also explores methods used in criminal justice investigations into corporate fraud, and emphasizes the importance of corporate social responsibility in reducing crimes of this nature. Criminal justice students and practitioners should not miss this close look into the world of white-collar crime.
