Book Catastrophe Spectacle

Download or read book Catastrophe Spectacle written by Martina Bengert and published by Neofelis Verlag. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From epidemics in the 17th century and the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 to Guernica in World War II, the essays in this volume trace the development of the catastrophic imagination, relying heavily on pictorial media and different forms of staging. Catastrophe in its modern sense seems to be inextricably linked to its spectacular representation, be it on the stage, on screen or in popular amusement parks. But the modern relationship between catastrophe and spectacle is also increasingly confronting us with the unimaginable side of catastrophe, particularly with regard to the Holocaust and in more recent times to the daily experience of refugees. The essays in this volume elucidate images of the catastrophes that have inspired them by providing a textual commentary that makes it possible to reconsider how the spectacular and the catastrophic are interrelated. Thus, the essays not only deal with the emergence of the modern spectacular imagination of catastrophe in terms of the history of both discourse and media, they also present themselves as a critique of catastrophe, one based on close readings of the scenes and images in question.

Book Earth s Catastrophic Past and Future

Download or read book Earth s Catastrophic Past and Future written by William Hutton and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Cayce, America's best documented psychic, gave upwards of 44 readings that dealt with lost continents, geophysical changes to Earth beginning 1958-1998, and a pole shift due to begin about now. In this book, geologist William Hutton and researcher Jonathan Eagle look for correspondences between results of geophysical research studies and psychic descriptions of prehistoric catastrophes. They also seek scientifically to test readings' predictions of catastrophic Earth changes, all the while investigating the following fascinating subjects: * Development and calibration of a comprehensive pole-shift model * The countries predicted to be most affected by a sudden, 1° pole shift. * The geologic trend for a mineralized gold vein at Bimini, Bahamas. * The authors' discoveries of correlations between: - a 2002 arctic earthquake and the eruption of torrid-area volcanoes, - the dropping of atom bombs in 1945 and a significant increase in sunspots following, and - the peaceable nature of Europe in 1645-1715 and the period's near total lack of sunspots. (Cayce readings implied or predicted all three phenomena.) * The first-ever analysis of the sources of Cayce's channeled readings, including a ranking of the veracity and reliability of the most important Earth changes and pole-shift readings. * Moralistic reasons for future catastrophic geophysical changes to Japan, China, and America. * Locations of post-pole-shift safety lands in Canada and America. * Locations of the records of the Atlantean civilization, to be found when Earth changes begin. * How to awaken to the New Cycle presently opening before humanity. * Evidence for Atlantis in the mid-Atlantic ridge area and for Lemuria (or Mu) in the Pacific. * The consuming religious war in which we find ourselves, and an answer to world conditions today. * Visions of an imminent Age-ending fire, as found in a Cayce reading, in a channeled book by Phylos the Tibetan, and in the 1960s visions of girls at Garabandal, Spain. * Doubtful interpretations of Earth-changes and pole-shift readings advanced by managers and writers of Cayce's legacy organization, the Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc. From the Foreword by the Editor: "The acid test of pole shift and other Earth change predictions is their scientific credibility. If true, momentous societal and political changes are imminent. The geopolitical map of the world will be redrawn. The authors are exploring the transition from the end of one Age to the beginning of another."

Lee thought divorce was in the cards. But ten months after telling him that she wanted that divorce, Duncan was diagnosed with cancer―and eight months later, he was gone. Luckily, Duncan had inadvertently left her the keys to her own salvation and healing―a love of Jungian psychology and a book that was to be her guide through the following years. In The Full Catastrophe, Karen explores Jungian analysis, the dreams she had during this period, the intuitive messages she learned to trust in order to heal, and her own emotional journey―including romances, travel adventures, and friends. Insightful and brutally honest, The Full Catastrophe is the story of a well educated, professional woman who, after marrying the wrong kind of man―twice―finally resurrects her life.

Book CATASTROPHE ALERT What Is To Be Done Against the Willful Destruction of the Unity of Humanity and Nature

Download or read book CATASTROPHE ALERT What Is To Be Done Against the Willful Destruction of the Unity of Humanity and Nature written by Stefan Engel and published by Verlag Neuer Weg. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ever increasing number of local and regional ecological catastrophes plague humanity. They are symptoms of an environmental crisis which is in the process of transforming at an accelerated pace into a global environmental catastrophe. As their chief causes are to be found in the capitalist profit system, the environmental question today calls for a society-changing struggle. This is why we need a new environmental movement which draws a clear dividing line to imperialist environmentalism and organizes its ranks. Militantly, purposefully and on a global scale it must confront the willful destruction of the natural foundations of life by those in power. The book's polemics are intentional. Taking an unequivocal position it intervenes in the debate over the strategy how to resolve the environmental issue.

Book From Catastrophe to Chaos A General Theory of Economic Discontinuities

Download or read book From Catastrophe to Chaos A General Theory of Economic Discontinuities written by J. Barkley Rosser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Catastrophe to Chaos: A General Theory of Economic Discontinuities presents and unusual perspective on economics and economic analysis. Current economic theory largely depends upon assuming that the world is fundamentally continuous. However, an increasing amount of economic research has been done using approaches that allow for discontinuities such as catastrophe theory, chaos theory, synergetics, and fractal geometry. The spread of such approaches across a variety of disciplines of thought has constituted a virtual intellectual revolution in recent years. This book reviews the applications of these approaches in various subdisciplines of economics and draws upon past economic thinkers to develop an integrated view of economics as a whole from the perspective of inherent discontinuity.

Book The Financing of Catastrophe Risk

Download or read book The Financing of Catastrophe Risk written by Kenneth A. Froot and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible that the insurance and reinsurance industries cannot handle a major catastrophe? Ten years ago, the notion that the overall cost of a single catastrophic event might exceed $10 billion was unthinkable. With ever increasing property-casualty risks and unabated growth in hazard-prone areas, insurers and reinsurers now envision the possibility of disaster losses of $50 to $100 billion in the United States. Against this backdrop, the capitalization of the insurance and reinsurance industries has become a crucial concern. While it remains unlikely that a single event might entirely bankrupt these industries, a big catastrophe could place firms under severe stress, jeopardizing both policy holders and investors and causing profound ripple effects throughout the U.S. economy. The Financing of Catastrophe Risk assembles an impressive roster of experts from academia and industry to explore the disturbing yet realistic assumption that a large catastrophic event is inevitable. The essays offer tangible means of both reassessing and raising the level of preparedness throughout the insurance and reinsurance industries.

Book Me and the Cute Catastrophe Sweet Small Town Romantic Comedy in Good Grief Idaho Book 1

Download or read book Me and the Cute Catastrophe Sweet Small Town Romantic Comedy in Good Grief Idaho Book 1 written by Jessie Gussman and published by Jessie Gussman. This book was released on 2021-02-06 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claire Harding I live in Idaho. (Yes, potatoes. *eye roll* Can we talk about something else?) And I love it here. Small town values galore and it’s right where I want to raise my girls after my jerk ex traded me in for a “younger, newer model” (his words, not mine). My mom’s the volunteer fire chief in our town and I’m pretty happy hanging out with the auxiliary at the fire hall and doing her grunt work – NOT fighting fires, because, please, I read, love science and my idea of a lot of exercise is having to walk up the stairs twice in the morning before I send my girls off to school and leave for my job as a home nurse. I guess it’s kind of weird that I also coach basketball. Long story. I was pretty happy with my life until the hot shot, all-state baller from my teen years moved back in next door. (I babysat him, yes, but I never changed his diapers. Just wanted to be clear about that.) Guess who’s now the assistant b-ball coach? Logic would say me – especially since I coached my entire first year holding the play book upside down (it turned out to be an old football playbook from the ‘80s, so it’s not like it mattered which way I held it) but the accurate answer is Trey Haywood, my all-star neighbor, and I’m honestly not sure which of us is more upset about it. Anyway, the team was trying to set us up (girls, they’re such romantics) and I don’t think they would have succeeded, but in celebration of breaking our 37 game losing streak, they locked Trey and me in the septic system control room. That changed everything. Not in a good way. Trey Yeah. What she said. And…when I first saw her again, I thought she was a catastrophe. New thought post septic control: she’s a cute catastrophe. (And, holy man, can she kiss.) Listen for free on the Say with Jay channel on YouTube. Reviews for Me and the Cute Catastrophe: ★★★★★ "This is a giggle, snort, snort, laugh out loud kind of book, but there is an underlying message about growing up, letting go of some insecurities, seeing life with all its warts but loving anyway. Oh and the kiss scene is the best." - Wren ★★★★★ "This is a little different than Jessie’s other books, but I LOVED it! Trey and Claire were truly fun to read about. You won’t be disappointed!" - Ashton01 ★★★★★ "It's beautifully written, the characters are true to real, and true to life. It's funny, and loving, and exciting, just like a Rom-Com should be. Although it doesn't have any sex in it, you can still feel the attraction and desire building." - Ken ★★★★★ "This book starts out funny from the very beginning and pulls you right in! I’m actually not a fan of funny books, (just to be clear, I do like a little humor) but this had me hooked right off!" - Kindle Customer ★★★★★ "I admit to being a skimmer. But the way this author writes, I had to stop that behavior and read every word so I wouldn’t miss out on a laugh or grin or smirk. She was just throwing those sentences out there and I couldn’t skim or I would miss them. Thank you so much Jessie for a really enjoyable read." - Shirley Books in the Sweet, Small Town Romantic Comedy in Good Grief, Idaho series: Me and the Cute Catastrophe Me and the Tidy Tornado Me and the Helpful Hurricane Me and the Sweet Snowstorm Me and the Dreamy Doomsday

Book Catastrophe Risk Financing in Developing Countries

Download or read book Catastrophe Risk Financing in Developing Countries written by J. David Cummins and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Catastrophe Risk Financing in Developing Countries' provides a detailed analysis of the imperfections and inefficiencies that impede the emergence of competitive catastrophe risk markets in developing countries. The book demonstrates how donors and international financial institutions can assist governments in middle- and low-income countries in promoting effective and affordable catastrophe risk financing solutions. The authors present guiding principles on how and when governments, with assistance from donors and international financial institutions, should intervene in catastrophe insurance markets. They also identify key activities to be undertaken by donors and institutions that would allow middle- and low-income countries to develop competitive and cost-effective catastrophe risk financing strategies at both the macro (government) and micro (household) levels. These principles and activities are expected to inform good practices and ensure desirable results in catastrophe insurance projects. 'Catastrophe Risk Financing in Developing Countries' offers valuable advice and guidelines to policy makers and insurance practitioners involved in the development of catastrophe insurance programs in developing countries.
