Book Luc Tuymans Catalogue Raisonn of Paintings Volume 3 2007 2018

Download or read book Luc Tuymans Catalogue Raisonn of Paintings Volume 3 2007 2018 written by Eva Meyer-Hermann and published by David Zwirner Books. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of a catalogue raisonné of Luc Tuymans’s paintings, surveying nearly two hundred works, charts the artist’s investigation into painting’s relationship to history and technology. Tuymans is widely credited with having contributed to the revival of painting in the 1990s. His sparsely colored, figurative works speak in a quiet, restrained, and at times unsettling voice and are typically painted from preexisting imagery that includes photographs and video stills. The works in this volume, made between 2007 to 2018, show Tuymans at his most virtuosic, subtly but provocatively addressing a range of topics including religion, corporatization, and cultural memory, in addition to modernism and the history of painting. The Internet, in particular, is central to these works as well as the screen—leading to a new style of contemporary image. The works are mediatized to the nth degree, despite the artist’s continuous use of the traditional medium of painting. There is a certain kind of light that comes out of a screen, which can be found in Tuymans’s recent paintings. This volume includes an editor’s note by Eva Meyer-Hermann and an illustrated chronology with archival images and installation views of the featured works. It also presents brilliant color reproductions of each painting from this period. This publication is a testament to Tuymans’s persistent assertion of the relevance and importance of painting—a conviction that he maintains even in today’s digital world, when his work continues to be a touchstone for artists and scholars.

Book Balthus Catalogue Raisonne of the Complete Works

Download or read book Balthus Catalogue Raisonne of the Complete Works written by Virginie Monnie and published by Harry N. Abrams. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balthus (Balthasar Klossowski de Rola), long considered one of the great figure painters of the twentieth century, has remained one of its most elusive creative spirits. Born into an aristocratic Polish family in 1908, Balthus grew up in the most cosmopolitan and cultivated circles of Geneva, Berlin, and finally Paris, where his artist parents settled in 1924. Attracted at an early age by the restraint and timelessness of the old masters, Balthus studied painting with Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, and Andre Derain. He was also fascinated by the work of the Surrealists, and he began to paint images of young girls in enigmatic settings suffused with an understated eroticism. While his calm, almost architectonic forms are reminiscent of Italian Renaissance art, the strange atmosphere of his paintings conveys a distinctly twentieth-century sensibility. The artist has remained silent on the underlying meanings of his images, and indeed has spent much of his life avoiding attention. Balthus's work was little recognized until the late 1960s, but his remarkable achievement finally received international acclaim in 1983, when a major retrospective exhibition opened at the Musee National d'Art Moderne-Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the City Museum, Tokyo. Still, the full extent of his output has not been known: nearly 100 paintings and numerous drawings, sketchbooks, and even sculptures have escaped notice. This monumental, lavishly illustrated volume, the outcome of years of study, reveals a surprisingly extensive oeuvre. An introductory essay by Jean Clair, curator of the landmark 1983 exhibition, defines the sometimesunexpected poetic, literary, and philosophical sources of Balthus's early inspiration. Then follows a full catalogue raisonne of Balthus's work by Virginie Monnier, published here in its original French. The catalogue includes all of the artist's 350 known paintings, nearly 1,000 previously unpublished drawings, and 50 sketch-books -- 2,100 works in all -- which enable us to understand his working methods and document the creation of most of his paintings. Long overdue, this comprehensive publication adds new luster to the reputation of an important and intriguing artist.

Book Ellsworth Kelly Catalogue Raisonn of Paintings Reliefs and Sculpture

Download or read book Ellsworth Kelly Catalogue Raisonn of Paintings Reliefs and Sculpture written by Ellsworth Kelly and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2016-03-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The insightful, gorgeously illustrated first volume of the most important publication to date on Ellsworth Kelly’s work Written by Ellsworth Kelly scholar Yve-Alain Bois in direct collaboration with the artist, this comprehensive multivolume publication contains exhaustive documentation of each of Kelly's paintings, sculptures, and reliefs. The catalogue includes insightful texts and high-quality images of individual works and preparatory drawings, along with provenance information, exhibition history, and bibliographic information. Encompassing Kelly's work up to his return to the United States from France in 1954, the present volume covers the artist's formative years as a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and as a young artist living in Paris, where he began painting the abstract forms which would later define his career. Kelly’s remarkable pace of production during this early period resulted in an especially diverse oeuvre, which is discussed in depth throughout this publication. In Bois’s words, “This diversity is the main reason many of the works examined in this volume are discussed at such length and in such detail: In almost every case, the particular question the artist was addressing, and the formal solution he devised for it, was entirely novel to him.”

Book The Paintings of Hendrick Ter Brugghen 1588 1629

Download or read book The Paintings of Hendrick Ter Brugghen 1588 1629 written by Leonard Joseph Slatkes and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paintings of Hendrick ter Brugghen (1588-1629), is the first major study of this important early seventeenth-century master since Benedict Nicolson's classic monograph of 1958. It comprises two chapters that explore ter Brugghen's development as an artist and the reception of his work among contemporaries, followed by a truly monumental catalogue raisonné of ter Brugghen's 89 authentic paintings, 54 pictures associated with the artist and/or his workshop, 141 rejected works, 42 lost works, and lastly, 10 drawings that have been linked to ter Brugghen directly or related to his paintings. Already celebrated during his lifetime, and avidly collected by elite cognescenti in the Dutch Republic and abroad, ter Brugghen executed a dazzling variety of paintings, ranging from Bible subjects and saints, to fascinating mythological images, as well as scenes of daily life, including musicians. Although his knowledge of paintings by Caravaggio that he had seen during his early sojourn in Rome always remained acute, these experiences were continually tempered by his awareness of older Northern European artistic traditions and conventions, with the result that ter Brugghen created pictures whose subject matter and style are fascinating, and at times, unique. Until his untimely death in August of 2003, Leonard J. Slatkes was Distinguished Professor of Art History at Queens College of the City University of New York, NY. He was an internationally renowned expert on the art of the Dutch Caravaggisti, to whom he had devoted many essays, books, and exhibition catalogues. Slatkes had begun conducting research on ter Brugghen's paintings in the 1960's, with the expectation of eventually publishing a new monograph on the artist. Wayne Franits, a former student of Slatkes's, is currently Professor of Fine Arts at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. He has authored numerous publications on seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish art.

Book Cindy Sherman

Book excerpt: "For more than thirty years now, Cindy Sherman has been visualizing a whole gamut of role models and female identities. ... Contrary to popular belief, the famous Untitled Film Stills (1978-80) are not her earliest works, but rather those photographs she took as a student in Buffalo between 1975 and 1977. During those years, Sherman made playing with disguises her artistic concept, producing numerous previously unknown photographs that unite a striking number of theatrical elements. Using a variety of wigs, make-up, mimicry, gestures, expressions, and costumes, Sherman reveals different social identities by playing different roles. Gabriele Schor, director of the SAMMLUNG VERBUND, has performed a scholarly assessment of the conceptual beginnings of her oeuvre and is now publishing a catalogue raisonné of her early work."--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: "Leonor Fini (1907-1996) was one of the most extraordinary artists of the twentieth century. She never formally trained as an artist but drew from many influences, notably the Flemish Masters, Symbolism, and Surrealism. An independent and passionate woman who felt an instinctual hostility to the idea of being part of any artistic group or movement, she shared with her avant-garde circle a fervent belief in the power of desire for social and political subversion. This authoritative Catalogue Raisonné is as timely as it is crucial, bringing Fini's vast body of work to the public so that her immense talent may be discovered, researched, and enjoyed."--Publisher's description.

Book Wifredo Lam 1923 1960

Download or read book Wifredo Lam 1923 1960 written by Lou Laurin-Lam and published by Acatos Pub. This book was released on 2002 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first volume of the catalogue raisonne of the painted works, covers the years 1923-1960 and is organized in four parts: analytical, historical, descriptive and technical. Born in the very beginning of this century, Wifredo Lam spanned an exceptionally rich and intense period of history, surviving the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and World War II. Time spent in Paris and the United States brought him into contact with the genius of Picasso, and so opened the doors to the influences of leading writers, artists and poets of the time. The innovations of Lam's imagery and design, the slow maturation of his unique style, and the peculiarity of its themes have been long recognized by private collectors for their artistic value, and are now finally being recognized on the part of the institutions.
