Book A People Passing Rude

Download or read book A People Passing Rude written by Anthony Cross and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The essays in this stimulating collection attest to the scope and variety of Russia's influence on British culture. They move from the early nineteenth century -- when Byron sent his hero Don Juan to meet Catherine the Great, and an English critic sought to come to terms with the challenge of Pushkin -- to a series of Russian-themed exhibitions at venues including the Crystal Palace and Earls Court. The collection looks at British encounters with Russian music, the absorption with Dostoevskii and Chekhov, and finishes by shedding light on Britain's engagement with Soviet film."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from the Preface: "This book does not attempt to select the greatest stories of the time. What tribunal would dare make such a choice? Nor does it attempt to trace the evolution of the short story or to point out natural types and differences. These topics are better suited to college classes. Its object is threefold: to supply interesting reading belonging to the student's own time, to help him to see that there is no divorce between classic and modern literature, and, by offering him material structurally good and typical of the qualities represented, to assist him in discriminating between the artistic and the inartistic."

Book The Strange Case of R L Stevenson

Download or read book The Strange Case of R L Stevenson written by Richard Woodhead and published by Luath Press Limited. This book was released on 2001 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A consultant physician for 22 years with a strong interest in Robert Louis Stevenson's life and work, Richard Woodhead was intrigued by the questions raised by the references to his symptoms. The assumption that he suffered from consumption - the diagnosis of the day - is challenged here. Consumption (tuberculosis), a scourge of nineteenth century society, it was regarded as severely debilitating if not a death sentence. Dr Woodhead examines how Stevenson's life was affected by his illness and his perception of it. This fictional work puts words into the mouths of five doctors who treated RLS at different periods of his adult life. Though these doctors existed in real-life, little is documented of their private conversations with RLS. However everything Dr Woodhead postulates could have occurred within the known framework of RLS's life. Detailed use of Stevenson's own writing adds authenticity to the views espoused in the book. RLS's writing continues to compel readers today. The fact that he did much of his writing while confined to his sick-bed is fascinating. What illness could have contributed to his creativity?
