Download or read book Stefan Lochner written by Julien Chapuis and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sumptuous paintings of Stefan Lochner (d. Cologne 1451) are among the most familiar yet least understood images of the late Middle Ages. His depictions of the Virgin and Child have entered the popular imagination as models of sweetness and grace, values superficially attached to them since their rediscovery two hundred years ago. Appreciation of Lochner's achievements has also been impeded by criticism that artificially judges him in terms of perceived realism. Both attitudes have blinded us to Lochner's creativity and invention. This book explores Lochner's oeuvre from various vantage points. Tracing current conceptions of the artist back to the earliest recorded testimonies, it first reviews Lochner's changing critical fortunes. A perceptual account of Lochner's major paintings and illuminated manuscripts follows, clarifying the artist's passion for the nature of representation and the different ways in which he engages the viewer. In addition, study of Lochner's works by means of infrared reflectography reveals a draftsman of the first order: his complex underdrawings foreshadow Martin Schongauer's graphic style of forty years later. Lochner's atelier and the different forms of collaboration that took place within it are the focus of a separate chapter. The book then identifies criteria in his images that contemporaries would have valued, such as his enduring engagement with the goldsmith's art, which typifies the manner in which his technical versatility enhanced the sensorial and emotive appeal of his images. An excursus examines painting in Cologne at the end of Lochner's career, while a catalogue provides basic information on all the paintings associated with Lochner and discusses the reflectography of most of them. The appendices contain Truus van Bueren's transcription and translation of all the known documents related to Lochner, the regulations of the Cologne painters' corporation, and Peter Klein's dendrochronological findings on Lochner's panels. The first monograph on Stefan Lochner since 1938, this book is richly illustrated with 69 color plates and 225 black-and-white reproductions; it includes a bibliography and index.

Download or read book Mythologies of the World written by Ron Smith and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the important available books on mythologies of all parts of the globe and the cultural contexts from which the mythological traditions emerged. Written as a series of bibliographic essays, the guide opens with a description of major reference sources encompassing many cultures, as well as those tracing particular themes (such as that of the creation) across cultures. The other bibliographic essays discuss sources for studying prehistoric mythologies, the mythologies of West Asian peoples (Mesopotamian, Biblical, Islamic, and others), South and East Asian mythologies, European mythologies, American Indian mythologies (North, Central, and South American), African mythologies, and the mythologies of the Pacific and Australia. An appendix on contemporary mythology--mainly American--discusses a wide range of works that examine the beliefs, traditions, and dreams that manifest themselves in spectator sports, politics, advertising, and forms of popular culture in the United States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the radical artists who transformed the ways art is conceived, exhibited, and collected, through the Dada, Surrealist, and Fluxus collections of Jean and Leonard Brown. Throughout the 1960s, Jean and Leonard Brown used their radical tastes, prescient instincts, and friendships with artists to assemble an extensive archive of Dada and surrealist publications and prints—including works by Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and Tristan Tzara. After Leonard’s death in 1970, Jean’s attention turned to Fluxus and other contemporary genres. Jean also established a site of alternative art production at her Shaker Seed House in Tyringham, Massachusetts, where she invited artists to engage with her collections. Fluxus works embraced the social and political critiques of earlier avant-garde artists and questioned the authority of the increasingly powerful contemporary art world of critics, collectors, curators, and gallerists. This examination of artists and their antiestablishment demands for change shows how their art was created, performed, exhibited, and collected in new ways that intentionally challenged traditional modes. By providing an expanded understanding of avant-garde and Fluxus artists through the lens of the Jean Brown Archive at the Getty Research Institute, this volume demonstrates the profound influence these artists had on contemporary art.
