Book excerpt: The news of the bombardment of the Basque town of Guernica by German planes during the Spanish Civil War was the inspiration that set Picasso to work on Guernica, the picture that transcended the specific historical moment to wich it refers to become the great icon of the twentieth century. In 2017 we commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the work's creation and the twenty-fifth anniversary of its arrival to the Museo Reina Sofía, with the organization of Pity and Terror: Picasso's Path to Guernica, a new exhibition of more than 170 pieces from the museum's own collection and from other institutions. To coincide with the anniversary of Guernica, the Museo Reina Sofía is publishing two books that are the result of research carried out by the Collections Department. The first is the current volume, Pity and Terror: Picasso's Path to Guernica, while the second will examine Guernica's travels.

The finds assemblage included flint handaxes and other tools which gave a clear picture of Middle Pleistocene methods of hunting and butchery. Book Ethnographies of Archaeological Practice

Download or read book Ethnographies of Archaeological Practice written by Matt Edgeworth and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2006-05-04 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnographic perspectives are often used by archaeologists to study cultures both past and present - but what happens when the ethnographic gaze is turned back onto archaeological practices themselves? That is the question posed by this book, challenging conventional ideas about the relationship between the subject and the object, the observer and the observed, and the explainers and the explained. This book explores the production of archaeological knowledge from a range of ethnographic perspectives. Fieldwork spans large parts of the world, with sites in Turkey, the Netherlands, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Germany, the USA and the United Kingdom being covered. They focus on excavation, inscription, heritage management, student training, the employment of hired workers and many other aspects of archaeological practice. These experimental ethnographic studies are situated right on the interface of archaeology and anthropology_on the road to a more holistic study of the present and the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A necessary addition to the literature on Latin America’s Pentecostals, whose number exceeds 100 million . . . a highly readable text.” —Times Higher Education “It’s not a process,” one pastor insisted, “rehabilitation is a miracle.” In the face of addiction and few state resources, Pentecostal pastors in Guatemala City are fighting what they understand to be a major crisis. Yet the treatment centers they operate produce this miracle of rehabilitation through extraordinary means: captivity. These men of faith snatch drug users off the streets, often at the request of family members, and then lock them up inside their centers for months, sometimes years. Hunted is based on more than ten years of fieldwork among these centers and the drug users that populate them. Over time, as Kevin Lewis O’Neill engaged both those in treatment and those who surveilled them, he grew increasingly concerned that he, too, had become a hunter, albeit one snatching up information. This thoughtful, intense book will reframe the arc of redemption we so often associate with drug rehabilitation, painting instead a seemingly endless cycle of hunt, capture, and release. “O’Neill uses his dramatic story of the manhunt to rethink Foucauldian pastoral power . . . [an] utterly brilliant book.” —PoLAR: Political and Legal Anthropology Review “The theme of Kevin Lewis O’Neill’s fascinating book, Hunted—i.e., drug addicts kidnapped and held in involuntary confinement in treatment centers run by Guatemalan Pentecostals—may strike readers as so outré or outrageous as to provoke a reaction . . . Hunted consists in brilliant participant-observer reportage.” —Pneuma
