Download or read book Carry on Letters in War Time Classic Reprint written by Coningsby Dawson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carry on Letters in War-Time Think, adequately expressed in the phrase C curry On, which I have used as the title of this book. It was our happy lot to meet Coningsby in Lon don in the January of the present year, when he was granted ten days' leave. In the course of conversation one night he laid emphasis on the fact that he, and those who served with him, were, after all, not professional soldiers, but civilians at war. They did not love war, and when the war was ended not five per cent of them would remain in the army. They were men who had left professions and vocations which still engaged the best parts of their minds, and would return to them when the hour came. War was for them an occupation, not a vocation. Yet they had proved themselves, one and all, splen did soldiers, bearing the greatest hardships with out complaint, and facing wounds and death with a gay courage which had made the Canadian forces famous even among a host of men, equally brave and heroic. The secret of their fortitude lay in the one brief phrase, Carry On. Their fortitude was of the spirit rather than the nerves. They were aware of the solemn ideals of justice, liberty, and righteousness for which they fought, and would never give up till they were won. In the completeness of their surrender to a great cause they had been lifted out of themselves to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I scarcely saw. Or is it because I did see something in that flashing moment - something of your soul? Probably No, but since I write, possibly Yes. How enigmatic you are - enigmatic as only simplicity can be. And your charm - that is more easily described - that trick of the lifted lids - all childhood and frankness - that low, clear voice rippled as a woodland pool is rippled by the first warning of a nearing storm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wartime Letters From Italy Yesterday I said to the Italian steward who serves our table, "Gaetano, do you think we shall find war in Italy?" Gaetano has youth and strength, qualities beloved of kings and generals, so Gaetano's mind dwells much upon the possibility of war. Then, too, in Napoli is Bianca Fortunelli, who will go with him to the priest at San Stefano's in June - if! Assuredly Gaetano was the one to know if war was "in the air." To-day proved him a prophet. At my question yesterday his manner became grave, like that of an old man who has thought much, and there was no lilt of adventure in his voice as in a mixture of English and Italian, he replied: "Signore, I feel that my beautiful country is entering into much sadness; I feel that the sons and fathers in Italia will die, because in two thousand years mankind has not learned to be contented with prosperity and peace. Book excerpt: Carry On: Letters In War Time With An Introduction And Notes By His Father, W.J. Dawson This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the War Path: A Lady's Letters From the Front It was written in all sorts of odd surround ings and is in consequence scrappy and not always English. My publisher, however, tells me I am not to touch it up, and I may say that what it lacks in grammar it makes up in truth. I put down things as they were and endeavoured not to say how I thought they ought to have been; there has already been far too much irresponsible lay criticism of matters military and medical in South Africa. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soldier's Progress, From the War Letters of Carnegie Tech Men Early this morning, some thirty moments before the sun, I dressed and Slipped from the house to go for a dip in the pit, an abandoned stone-quarry nearby. It is about a third full of spring water, twenty or thirty feet deep, and blue-green as only spring water can be. After my plunge I scaled the cliff-like walls naked and perched high on a stone, waiting the sun. I busied myself by drawing on the dew-covered leaves of a mullein the initials of all my friends. That mullein, a lusty one, did not have leaves enough for all the people I could think of with pleasure. True, some people need several leaves, for they contain many lovable persons in one. Then the sun came up, a magnificent rose of yellow. With all of this I am back at home writing my good-byes before any of my lazy family are apparent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Letters and Essays To bring this point out it was necessary to have frequent recourse to forgotten histories and biographies, and thus I account for the pres ence of the several reviews embodied in this collection. Moreover, armament and skill on the part of the leaders being equal, victory, under all conditions of improvements conceivable in weapons, will ultimately remain with the best disciplined troops, and by discipline I understand that quality which is measured by the endurance of loss by troops under fire, having due regard, of course, to the circumstances of time, ground, and employment under which the losses were inflicted. No training in which this ultimate end of discipline is lost sight of is worth the time wasted on it, and, reading between the lines, it will be very evident that I am far from considering that all the time spent in military training in England is employed to the best advantage. This accounts for the descriptions of field days, etc., which may appear to many to possess but ephemeral interest. Who has forgotten the thrill of horror experienced when the news came of the attack upon Sumter, confirming the truth he was so slow to believe, that sacrilegious hand had been laid upon the sacred Ark of the Union, and the terrible alternative forced upon the Govern ment of war, dismemberment, or complicity with an evil which would rear its hydra-head, and spread blight over our fair territories and sister States yet to be? And we remember, too, that when the grievous necessity of war was accepted, each one felt that the lion had but to shake Off his lethargy, put forth his strength, and go forward - the Army of the N orth - in a grand triumphal march, to quell and intimidate, by its presence, our rebellious, misguided brethren, and bring them with contrition back into the fold-back into the once United compact, those who had inconsiderately stricken a blow at the great Magna Charta of Union and Liberty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meanwhile a Packet of War Letters I expressed a strong wish to the friend, H. L. G., who wrote me the following letters in days of great sorrow and trouble, that he would allow them to be published. It is my belief that they may help other people, as they have helped me. He said that they were only intended for me and I replied that it was just this which gave them their value, that they were not written for effect, but to help a par ticular case; not intended to win credit for the writer, but just to face a disaster which many people have had to face, more or less. He consented, and I am grateful to him and I hope they will be read rather than criticised, and treated as an affectionate confidence between friends. They may throw light on a dark path; and that is the most that any words can do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An;, "An American Citizen" Life and War Letters We hope that the readers of The Observer to day will bow their heads in honour and in rever ence of a splendid young American citizen, Sec ond Lieutenant Harry Butters, of California. He has laid down his life for England, the country he loved next to his own and for the Allies' cause he held to be the best and greatest that had ever been at stake in the world. At the age of twenty four he was killed on Thursday night, August 3 I, by the same shell that killed his battery com mander. He was no ordinary man. As his example and purpose are better under stood, his memory will win more than a passing thought from many on both sides Of the Atlantic who never knew him. Those who did know him on this side mourn with deep sadness his early death, and will al ays hold him in mind with affectionate pride. He is to be honoured not only like our own, but with especial gratitude. Our own boys go forth in a temper that makes dross of all careful egotism in respect of their safety or any other personal interest. But they go forth in duty.
