Download or read book Dialogue and Dementia written by Robert W. Schrauf and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes the positive view that conversation between persons with dementia and their interlocutors is a privileged site for ongoing cognitive engagement. The book aims to identify and describe specific linguistic devices or strategies at the level of turn-by-turn talk that promote and extend conversation, and to explore real-world engagements that reflect these strategies. Final reflections tie these linguistic strategies and practices to wider issues of the "self" and "agency" in persons with dementia. Thematically, the volume fosters an integrated perspective on communication and cognition in terms of which communicative resources are recognized as cognitive resources, and communicative interaction is treated as reflecting cognitive engagement. This reflects perspectives in cognitive anthropology and cognitive science that regard human cognitive activity as distributed and culturally rooted. This volume is intended for academic researchers and advanced students in applied linguistics, linguistic and medical anthropology, nursing, and social gerontology; and practice professionals in speech-language pathology and geropsychology.

Download or read book The Great War of Our Time written by Michael Morell and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like See No Evil and At the Center of the Storm, this is a vivid and gripping account of the Central Intelligence Agency, a life of secrets, and a war in the shadows. Called the "Bob Gates of his generation" by Politico, Michael Morell was a top CIA officer who played a critical role in the most important counterterrorism events of the past two decades. Morell was by President Bush's side on 9/11/01 when terrorists struck America and in the White House Situation Room advising President Obama on 5/1/11 when America struck back-killing Usama bin Ladin. From the subway bombings in London to the terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Morell always seemed to find himself on the cusp of history. A superb intelligence analyst and briefer, Morell now presents The Great War of Our Time, where he uses his talents to offer an unblinking and insightful assessment of CIA's counterterrorism successes and failures of the past twenty years and, perhaps most important, shows readers that the threat of terrorism did not die with Bin Ladin in Abbottabad. Morell illuminates new, growing threats from terrorist groups that, if unaddressed, could leave the country vulnerable to attacks that would dwarf 9/11 in magnitude. He writes of secret, back-channel negotiations he conducted with foreign spymasters and regime leaders in a desperate attempt to secure a peaceful outcome to unrest launched during the "Arab Spring." Morell describes how efforts to throw off the shackles of oppression have too often resulted in broken nation states unable or unwilling to join the fight against terrorism. Along the way Morell provides intimate portraits of the leadership styles of figures ranging from Presidents Bush and Obama, CIA directors Tenet, Goss, Hayden, Petraeus, Panetta, and Brennan, and a host of others.

Download or read book Baseball in North Carolina s Piedmont written by Chris Holaday and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bordered by the Appalachian Mountains to the west and the flat coastal plain to the east, North Carolina's foothills region, also called the Piedmont, is home to a remarkable baseball heritage. For well over a century, the game has played a meaningful role in the lives of Piedmont residents. Countless thousands have participated in this national tradition and though some went on to become famous professional players in the big leagues, most never played for more than their local team. All, however, contributed to an important part of regional history. The North Carolina Piedmont has long been famous for its minor league teams, including the Durham Bulls and the Carolina Mudcats, but it's not just the professionals who helped shape the area's baseball tradition. College programs like those at the University of North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, and NC State have all figured prominently on the national scene at one time or another. High school teams from towns including Sanford have ranked among the nation's best, while American Legion teams have even captured the national championship. In the past it was the textile mills that contributed so much to the region's baseball heritage. Many of the mills only exist in memories today, but some of the teams they fielded-with names like McCrary, Wiscassett, Cannon, and Cooleemee-became local legends. With such a rich and colorful history, there is no doubt that North Carolina's Piedmont is truly baseball country.
Download or read book Prodigal Daughter written by Christian j Raines and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-07-17 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultures in our world often endorse the acceptability of beliefs and behaviors that God does not approve of. Can a man be wiser than God? The answer to that question from the Christian biblical perspective is "Absolutely not!" Viewing women as objects of lust and not people of value who Jesus sacrificed His life to save and redeem is one of the problems of this world we live in. This Christian fiction novel I wrote aims to shine the light of Jesus Christ on the consciousness of the reader, partly in an attempt to uncover and expose the lies of the enemy about the consequences of sexual sins. There is only one truth, and that is found in the gospels of Jesus the Messiah! There are some that want people, and women specifically, to be blind to the destructive nature of sin because misery loves company and because a predator wants prey. The fact is that there are many great reasons to obey God in this area of life, including preventing sexually transmitted diseases, eliminating the possibility of an unwanted pregnancy or abortion, having the support of a God-fearing spouse to manage the difficulties of life, and raising children together, and even financial security because of the commitment and trust in a Christian marriage that is truly devoted to God. In this book, you will read about a prodigal daughter named Magdalene. I'm sure that name is familiar to Bible readers. Magdalene's various experiences through her journey of life, which I created as an expression of literary art, illustrate the importance of making good decisions when tackling real-life issues in our world today, such as those mentioned above. Even more real is the Savior of this world that Magdalene encounters, who welcomes her as a loving Father. The parable Jesus teaches us in Luke 15, found in the Bible, inspired me to write this book. When Magdalene accepts Jesus into her heart after an encounter with a special person sent to her by God, Magdalene also learns to take accountability for her own mistakes. In this way, she finds forgiveness, repentance, and a closer relationship with Jesus that brings her a new and better life. Magdalene leaving her old life and turning toward Jesus is the exciting part of this book! I am not going to give any spoilers because I want you to read this book and find out for yourself what happens. I wrote this book for the saved and the lost, so if you are a prodigal son or daughter, then this book is for you too. My hope is that some women might read this book who identify with Magdalene's lifestyle at the beginning of the book and that those readers feel the Holy Spirit calling them to make a decision to live by faith in Jesus Christ, as happens to several characters in this book. Jesus is real! God loves you no matter what you've done because of His goodness, not because any of us can ever earn His love and goodness! God's grace is always a gift! For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB)
Download or read book North Carolina and World War II written by Anita Price Davis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina did more than its part during World War II. This Southern state trained more troops than any other state in the nation. Can one still find the military posts and shipyards, the cemeteries and memorials, the convalescent units and R&R facilities today? This volume describes in detail both the state's 20-plus military sites and the eight little-known North Carolina prisoner of war camps. Images and memories tell the story of service personnel and their families who contributed to the war effort at much personal sacrifice. The book reminds readers of how those Carolinians who remained behind did their part through supporting the troops, rationing, salvaging metals, growing Victory Gardens and purchasing War Bonds.
