Book excerpt: This collections contains one pamphlet, two petitions, and two letters arguing the reasons the state capitol of Iowa should be located in Pella. Iowa's capitol city moved from Burlington to Iowa City to Des Moines from 1846 when it became a state to 1871 when the cornerstone of the final capitol site was chosen in Des Moines. In the intervening years, many cities across Iowa presented cases to the new state legislature for why their city should be chosen as the capitol of the new state. H.P. Scholte led the crusade to make Pella the capitol. This collection holds two petitions written by him and signed by many Pella citizens along with two copies of the same letter that was sent to the state legislature in 1852 outlining Pella's advantages as a site for the capitol. The booklet gives a thorough description of the first foundation stone laying ceremony on November 23, 1871 for the capitol building in Des Moines.

Book excerpt: Much of Europe and the Middle East have been governed by a king, Queen, Emperor, or Empress. These individuals in most cases began a dynasty which lasted many years, and are still reigning today. The Roman Empire grew so huge and vast that it needed two Emperors to rule both East and West, while the Middle Eastern countries suffered under their control. Russia was ruled by Tsars, and a great many dynasties existed. This book takes a look at these leaders, and uncovers the facts surrounding the reigns of these leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In tracing the emergence of the Macedonian kingdom from its origins as a Balkan backwater to a major European and Asian power, Eugene Borza offers to specialists and lay readers alike a revealing account of a relatively unexplored segment of ancient history. He draws from recent archaeological discoveries and an enhanced understanding of historical geography to form a narrative that provides a material-culture setting for political events. Examining the dynamics of Macedonian relations with the Greek city-states, he suggests that the Macedonians, although they gradually incorporated aspects of Greek culture into their own society, maintained a distinct ethnicity as a Balkan people. "Borza has taken the trouble to know Macedonia: the land, its prehistory, its position in the Balkans, and its turbulent modern history. All contribute...to our understanding of the emergence of Macedon.... Borza has employed two of the historian's most valuable tools, autopsy and common sense, to produce a well-balanced introduction to the state that altered the course of Greek and Near Eastern history."--Waldemar Heckel, Bryn Mawr Classical Review
