Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part history and part meditation, Down to Now is a southern journalist's intensely personal account of the civil rights movement in the South during the 1960s. As a reporter for the Atlanta Journal- Constitution and then as a writer for the Southern Regional Council, Pat Watters followed the movement from the early days of sit-ins, marches, and freedom rides through the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and the Poor People's Campaign in the summer of 1968. First published in 1971 and written mostly from the author's own recollections, tapes, and notes, the book blends detailed reportage of the dramatic events with insightful commentary on what the movement meant and why it declined. Eloquent and compassionate, Down to Now is, in Watter's words, “a book about the movement by a white Southerner who did not participate in the movement—but whose life was essentially changed by it.”

Book The Extraterrestrials in an Adventure with the American Army

Download or read book The Extraterrestrials in an Adventure with the American Army written by Ken Patterson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bored with the usual cattle mutilations and earthling abductions, The Alien Captain and his daring, gray explorers head to Kansas to participate in a crop circle contest. Unfortunately, due in part to a gray navigators poor self-esteem and hereditary earwax problems, another crewmates random Tourettes-driven outbursts, and The Alien Captains obsession with meeting William Shatner at an upcoming Star Trek convention, the grays unintentionally pilot their flying saucer into The Shite Black Hole. Transported back in time the hapless travelers crash in a remote spot in Americas southwest. Having no other options, the grays accept an offer from the Roswell Airfield intelligence officer, Major Marcel, to stay in the bases plush, underground quarters. It soon becomes apparent, however, that Marcels seemingly generous offer comes with a condition: the U.S. Army wants the grays to build a working flying saucer. Initially, they accept this offer, but soon find they are not up to the task of constructing an interstellar spacecraft. The grays also quickly discover they are not actually guests, but prisoners. Their hosts promise of free room and board and all the bowling they can handle is not everything it is cracked up to be. Wanting to return to their home planet of Gliese 581 c., the grays feign the need for a break from spaceship building. They convince Major Marcel to take them on a day trip to Carlsbad Caverns, where they commandeer an army air corps bus and escape to Santa Fe in hope of contacting Gliesean kinfolk manning The Emergency Earth Operations Center for Stranded Graynauts. This is a story of what happens when a happy-go-lucky space trip turns into a not-so-happy-go-lucky road trip. It is the story of barbecuing under a million stars with a ray gun. It is the story of visiting a roadside museum in the desert where sometimes visitors are put on display. It is the story of what it is like to make a mailbox that looks like a UFO. In short, it is the story of what it is like to be an alien in an alien world. But most of all, it is the story of what really happened at Roswell, New Mexico in 1947.

Book Don t Let It Break Your Heart

Download or read book Don t Let It Break Your Heart written by Maggie Horne and published by Feiwel & Friends. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect for fans of The Half of It, Maggie Horne's debut YA contemporary novel is an ode to lifelong friendships and discovering queer community. You only get one soulmate, and I'm not throwing mine away. Alana and Gray have been the perfect couple ever since they got together before high school – and neither of them think that should have to change just because Alana came out as a lesbian. Sure, things are a little different now: their romantic relationship is over, but their best-friends-since-forever relationship is stronger than ever. And yeah, Alana sees the way her other friends now exclude her in tiny, almost unnoticeable ways, but she still has Gray, and that’s all that’s ever mattered to her. Really, the only difference is that instead of kissing Gray herself, Alana sets him up with other girls to do that. But when new girl Tal arrives, she stops Alana and Gray in their tracks. Suddenly, Gray’s all-in on his plan to get Tal to fall in love with him, and, for the first time, Alana’s reluctant to help. As Alana and Tal grow closer, and Alana begins to think Tal might share her feelings, she has to decide whether to embrace her queerness and risk losing the life she thought she was building, or continue to hide parts of herself and maintain the status quo. Don’t Let it Break Your Heart is a tender and romantic exploration of identity, love, and friendship that turns the friends to lovers romance trope on its head.
