Book Review of Fuel Failures in Water Cooled Reactors

Download or read book Review of Fuel Failures in Water Cooled Reactors written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1998 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to provide a combined presentation of the worldwide experience gained on fuel failures in water cooled reactors and to give statistical data on fuel failures for the period 1987 to 1994. It contains detailed descriptions of primary and secondary failure mechanisms which occurred in 'western' type boiling and pressurized water reactors (BWRs and PWRs), Soviet type pressurized light water reactors (WWERs) and Canadian type heavy water reactors (CANDUs). It also includes information on detection, examination and analysis of fuel failures as well as on fuel failure prevention and management in plant operation.

Book Canadian Fuel Development Program

Download or read book Canadian Fuel Development Program written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews some of the key programs on fuel technology within the CANDU power reactor owners' group. It begins with outlining the characteristics and design evolution of CANDU power reactor fuel, its performance, and defect mechanisms. The paper reviews the programs in two groups: the Fuel Technology Program and the Advanced Fuel Cycle programs. Key elements in these programs include studies of the effect of oxygen/metal ratio on fuel performance, corrosion protection, extended burnup irradiation, operational limits, fuel damage, fuel behavior modelling, decay heat removal, and the use of recovered uranium, spent pressurized-water reactor fuel, and low void reactivity fuel.

Book Canada Enters the Nuclear Age

Download or read book Canada Enters the Nuclear Age written by D.G. Hurst and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1997-04-19 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by sixteen of Canada's pioneering nuclear scientists, the book focuses on Canada's nuclear program at AECL's laboratories at Chalk River, Ontario, and Whiteshell, Manitoba, between the years 1943 and 1985. Topics include the organization and operations of AECL's laboratories, nuclear safety and radiation protection, radioisotopes, basic research, development of the CANDU reactor, and the management of radioactive wastes. As well as providing a valuable historical perspective on Canadian science, Canada Enters the Nuclear Age offers useful guidance for innovative scientific development in the future, a future that will depend on developing and nurturing technically sophisticated industry.

Book Structural Materials in Nuclear Power Systems

Download or read book Structural Materials in Nuclear Power Systems written by J. T. Adrian Roberts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the effort devoted to assuring both the safety and reliability of commercial nuclear fission power reactors has markedly increased. The incentives for performing this work are large since the resulting im provement in plant productivity translates into lower fuel costs and, more importantly, reduced reliance on imported oil. Reliability and availability of nuclear power plants, whether fission or fusion, demand that more attention be focused on the behavior of materials. Recent experiences with fission power indicate that the basic properties of materials, which categorize their reliable behavior under specified conditions, need reinforcement to assure trouble-free operation for the expected service life. The pursuit of additional information con tinues to demand a better understanding of some of the observed anom alous behavior, and of the margin of resistance of materials to unpre dictable service conditions. It is also apparent that, next to plasma heating and confinement, materials selection represents the most serious chal lenge to the introduction of fusion power. The recognition of the importance of materials performance to nu clear plant performance has sustained a multimillion dollar worldwide research and development effort that has yielded significant results, both in quantification of the performance limits of materials in current use and the development and qualification of new materials. Most of this infor mation appears in the open literature in the form of research reports, journal articles, and conference proceedings.
