Book Calvinistic Controversy 1835

Download or read book Calvinistic Controversy 1835 written by Wilbur Fisk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calvinistic Controversy, 1835: Embracing a Sermon on Predestination and Election, and Several Numbers Formerly Published in the Christian Advocate and Journal IN this passage, the kindred doctrines of pre destination and election are brought into view. To discuss them; to notice some errors respect ing them, and to exhibit what is believed to be the Scriptural and rational view of these doc trines, is the proposed object of the present dis course. In doing this, much that is new cannot be expected._ The whole ground of this contro very has been examined and re-examined and the various arguments, on both sides, have been urged and opposed, by the most able polemics in philosophy and theology. The most, therefore, that can now be expected, is to give a concise view of the subject, in a form and manner suited to the present state of the controversy, and to the circumstances of the present congregation. Book Calvinistic Controversy

Book excerpt: The numbers following the sermon on predestination and election, were written at different times, and in some instances at quite distant intervals from each other. This will be received, it is hoped, as an apology for any want of connection or uniformity of style, which the reader may notice. And if any farther apology be necessary, it may be found in the fact, that the entire contents of the volume as it is now presented, were written in the midst of other pressing duties.—And the same reason has prevented my giving the work such a thorough revision, as it should have had, before it was presented to the public, in the more set and imposing form of a book. Such a form was not originally thought of—and now that this is called for, the author is well aware that the public might expect a careful revision and correction of the whole. From this however, he must, of necessity, be excused. He has been able to do little more than correct the typographical errors. If the public have it, therefore, it must go "with all its imperfections on its head."

Book Dictionary of Early American Philosophers

Download or read book Dictionary of Early American Philosophers written by John R. Shook and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 1249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Early American Philosophers, which contains over 400 entries by nearly 300 authors, provides an account of philosophical thought in the United States and Canada between 1600 and 1860. The label of "philosopher" has been broadly applied in this Dictionary to intellectuals who have made philosophical contributions regardless of academic career or professional title. Most figures were not academic philosophers, as few such positions existed then, but they did work on philosophical issues and explored philosophical questions involved in such fields as pedagogy, rhetoric, the arts, history, politics, economics, sociology, psychology, medicine, anthropology, religion, metaphysics, and the natural sciences. Each entry begins with biographical and career information, and continues with a discussion of the subject's writings, teaching, and thought. A cross-referencing system refers the reader to other entries. The concluding bibliography lists significant publications by the subject, posthumous editions and collected works, and further reading about the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Christianity Today 2010 Book Award for History/Biography, and praised in Christian Century as "witty...erudite...masterful," this groundbreaking history, the first of its kind, shows that far from being only about the age-old riddle of divine sovereignty versus human free will, the debate over predestination is inseparable from other central Christian beliefs and practices--the efficacy of the sacraments, the existence of purgatory and hell, the extent of God's providential involvement in human affairs--and has fueled theological conflicts across denominations for centuries. Peter Thuesen reexamines not only familiar predestinarians such as the New England Puritans and many later Baptists and Presbyterians, but also non-Calvinists such as Catholics and Lutherans, and shows how even contemporary megachurches preach a "purpose-driven" outlook that owes much to the doctrine of predestination. For anyone wanting a fuller understanding of religion in America, Predestination offers both historical context on a doctrine that reaches back 1,600 years and a fresh perspective on today's denominational landscape.
