Book excerpt: THE EXPANSIVE COMMENTARY COLLECTION is a new release of much loved and oft used commentaries. Each commentary is beautifully formatted with every verse given an uncluttered presentation for ease of reference and use. We have taken great care to provide you with each individual commentary as it was intended and written by the original author. In this volume we give you John Calvin's commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians. One of the father's of the Reformation, John Calvin, has been given a prominent place in today's theology. Indeed his very name has been lent to a system of theology - Calvanism. Born in Noyon, France on 10th July 1509 he carried on the work of the Reformation, which had recently begun. He had trained as a humanist lawyer and broke away from the Catholic Church around 1530. His new-found religion caused tension that led to him fleeing France, eventually settling in Geneva, Switzerland.Calvin is a spiritual giant whose mind was exceptional in producing theological writing and sermons.Reading Calvin today may be secondary to the impossibility of hearing him but there is no doubt that his words still carry the weight of Biblical truth. As a commentary the value of John Wesley's contribution must not be underestimated. His writing is doctrinal but not dogmatic. He shines new light on various passages but all the time remaining true to the biblical meaning. This work was translated by the Calvin Translation Society who published these works between 1846-51.

Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. His commentaries cover the larger part of the Old Testament, and all of the new excepting Second and Third John and the Apocalypse. His commentaries and lectures stand in the front rank of Biblical interpretation. The extraordinary ability and skill displayed by CALVIN, in his COMMENTARIES on the Inspired Writings, have been set forth by almost all the Translators of this Series. I have always thought, and am happy to have the support of his latest Editor, Dr. Tholuck, that he is more successful in expounding the EPISTLES OF PAUL than in any other portion of Scripture. This might arise in part from having studied them with uncommon ardor and perseverance. The times in which he lived held out strong inducements to examine the great peculiarities of the Christian Faith. And where were these so likely to be found as in the writings of an Apostle whom the Spirit of God employed, more than all the others, in unfolding to the Church “the unsearchable riches of Christ?”

This book was released on 2015-06-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean (eng. John) Calvin developed his theology in his biblical commentaries as well as his sermons and treatises, but the most concise expression of his views is found in his magnum opus, the Institutes of the Christian Religion. He intended that the book be used as a summary of his views on Christian theology and that it be read in conjunction with his commentaries. Calvin provided many of the foundational documents for reformed churches, including documents on the catechism, the liturgy, and church governance. He also produced several confessions of faith in order to unite the churches. Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. His first commentary on Romans was published in 1540, and he planned to write commentaries on the entire New Testament. Six years passed before he wrote his second, a commentary on I Corinthians, but after that he devoted more attention to reaching his goal. Within four years he had published commentaries on all the Pauline epistles, and he also revised the commentary on Romans. He then turned his attention to the general epistles, dedicating them to Edward VI of England. By 1555 he had completed his work on the New Testament, finishing with the Acts and the Gospels (he omitted only the brief second and third Epistles of John and the Book of Revelation). For the Old Testament, he wrote commentaries on Isaiah, the books of the Pentateuch, the Psalms, and Joshua. The material for the commentaries often originated from lectures to students and ministers that he reworked for publication.

Book Commentary on Ephesians

Book excerpt: For hundreds of years John Calvin's Commentaries have been admired and relied upon for their deep insights into Scripture. Charles Spurgeon told his students, "It would not be possible for me too earnestly to press upon you the importance of reading the expositions of that prince among men, John Calvin! Of all commentators I believe John Calvin to be the most candid. He was no trimmer and pruner of texts. He gave their meaning as far as he knew it. His honest intention was to translate the Hebrew and the Greek originals as accurately as he possibly could, and then to give the meaning which would naturally be conveyed by such Greek and Hebrew words: he laboured, in fact, to declare, not his own mind upon the Spirit's words, but the mind of the Spirit as couched in those words." And even Arminius himself admitted, "Next to the perusal of the Scriptures, which I earnestly inculcate, I exhort my pupils to peruse Calvin's commentaries, for I affirm that he excels beyond comparison in the interpretation of Scripture, and that his commentaries ought to be more highly valued than all that is handed down to us by the Library of the Fathers; so that I acknowledge him to have possessed above most others, or rather above all other men, what may be called an eminent gift of prophecy."

Our Author has exerted a powerful influence on all succeeding expositors. They have found their interest in listening to his instructions, and have been more deeply indebted to him than is generally known. Many valuable interpretations of passages of Scripture appeared for the first time in his writings, and have ever since been warmly approved. In other cases, the views which had been previously held are placed by him in so strong a light as to remove every doubt, and satisfy the most cautious inquiry. And yet the stores, from which so much has been drawn, are far from being exhausted, nor is their value greatly lowered by improvements which have been subsequently made. The department of History presents an analogous case. Documents which had been overlooked are carefully examined. Conflicting evidence is more accurately weighed. Important transactions assume a new aspect, or, at least, are altered in their subordinate details. Still, there are historians, in whose narrative the great lines of truth are so powerfully drawn, that the feebler, though more exact, delineations of other men cannot supply their place. In the chief moral requisite for such a work Calvin is excelled by none. He is an honest interpreter. No consideration would have induced him to wrest the words of Scripture from their plain meaning. Those who may question his conclusions cannot trace them to an unworthy motive. Timid theologians will be occasionally startled by his expositions. Though they may not absolutely impeach the soundness of his doctrine, they will tremble for the fate of some favorite theory or ingenious argument. With such minds he has no sympathy. He examines the Scriptures with the humility of one who inquires at the oracle of God, (2 Samuel 16:23,) and proclaims the reply with the faith of one who knows that the word of the Lord is tried, (Psalm 18:30.)

Book John Calvin s Commentaries On St Paul s Epistles To The Philippians Colossians And Thessalonians Annotated Edition

Download or read book John Calvin s Commentaries On St Paul s Epistles To The Philippians Colossians And Thessalonians Annotated Edition written by John Calvin and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Epistle To The Philippians stands associated with a most interesting event in the history of the progress of Christianity. While the charge given to the Apostles as to the universal promulgation of the Gospel was most explicit, it was in a gradual manner, and for the most part under the guidance of circumstances seemingly fortuitous, that their sphere of labor was extended. The Epistle To The Colossians is generally supposed to have been written by PAUL about A.D. 62, in the ninth year of the reign of the Emperor Nero. It bears evidence of having been written during Paul’s first imprisonment at Rome. The First Epistle To The Thessalonians is generally believed to have been the first Epistle written by PAUL to any of the Churches of Christ. It appears to have been written towards the close of A.D. 52, about two years subsequently to the introduction of the Gospel into Thessalonica by the instrumentality of Paul and Silas. The Second Epistle To The Thessalonians appears to have been written a short time after PAUL’S former Epistle to that Church. The Apostle had learned, that some expressions in his former Epistle in reference to the hopes of Christians beyond the grave had been misapprehended by the Thessalonian converts, as though he had intended to intimate that Christ’s second advent was near at hand.

Book Engaging with Calvin

Download or read book Engaging with Calvin written by Mark Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Calvin was born on 10 July 1509. Five hundred years later, the ideas of this French theologian continue to influence churches all around the world, and Western culture in general. He has also been a victim of caricature and misunderstanding, even within his own lifetime. The contributors to this stimulating volume, linked with the 2009 Moore College School of Theology, are united by the conviction that Calvin needs to be heard afresh, understood first on his own terms and then drawn on as a theological resource for Christian life and thought today. The essays explore selected aspects of Calvin's contribution and encourage us to read Calvin for ourselves and to engage with him as he speaks about the knowledge of God the Creator and Redeemer, whom he served with a singular devotion, cannot but mean that we will have our vision of God expanded and our love for him inflamed. The contributors are Peter Adam, Michael Jensen, Paul Helm, Robert Doyle, Mark Thompson, Oliver Crisp, David Höhne, Martin Foord, John McClean, Andrew Cameron, Peter Jensen and Colin Bale.
