Book excerpt: We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those individ uals who helped us assemble this text, including the people of Lockheed Sanders and Nestor, Inc., whose encouragement and support were greatly appreciated. In addition, we would like to thank the members of the Lab oratory for Engineering Man-Machine Systems (LEMS) and the Center for Neural Science at Brown University for their frequent and helpful discussions on a number of topics discussed in this text. Although we both attended Brown from 1983 to 1985, and had offices in the same building, it is surprising that we did not meet until 1988. We also wish to thank Kluwer Academic Publishers for their profes sionalism and patience, and the reviewers for their constructive criticism. Thanks to John McCarthy for performing the final proof, and to John Adcock, Chip Bachmann, Deborah Farrow, Nathan Intrator, Michael Perrone, Ed Real, Lance Riek and Paul Zemany for their comments and assistance. We would also like to thank Khrisna Nathan, our most unbi ased and critical reviewer, for his suggestions for improving the content and accuracy of this text. A special thanks goes to Steve Hoffman, who was instrumental in helping us perform the experiments described in Chapter 9.

Download or read book Of Gods Mythical Creatures and Mynahs written by Uresh and published by The Inspiration Hub. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book consists of a collection of 3 plays. The first play features a gathering of Chinese deities at the court of the Heavenly Emperor on Chinese New Year day. The gods got themselves into a “serious” discussion to try to solve some of the problems that plagued humans on earth. The second play makes a revisitation of the “Red Hill story” and tells a tale involving Merlions and how the “Red Hill boy” comes back in the modern setting. The last play highlights the nature of bird communication through their ordinary business of daily living such as in getting their meals or in how they have to make “special” calls or passwords in identifying with the others. Sandy is interested in heritage matters and is an animal lover. Uresh and Ted are enthusiasts of science fiction, mythology and alternate history. The trio hopes all those who read the plays will discover something between the old and contemporary, the mythical and factual as well as what is usually understood as the norm versus the peculiar.

Download or read book A Dog Pissing at the Edge of a Path written by Gregory Forth and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nage people of the eastern Indonesian island of Flores refer to someone who begins something but is regularly distracted by other matters as "a dog pissing at the edge of a path." In this first comprehensive study of animal metaphors in a non-Western society, Gregory Forth focuses on how the Nage understand metaphor and use their knowledge of animals to shape specific expressions. Based on extensive field research, A Dog Pissing at the Edge of a Path explores the meaning and use of over 560 animal metaphors employed by the Nage. Investigating how closely their indigenous concept of pata péle corresponds to the Greek-derived English concept of metaphor, Forth demonstrates that the Nage people understand these figures of speech in the same way as Westerners – namely as conventional ways of speaking about people and objects, not expressions of an essential identity between their animal vehicles and human referents. Theoretically engaging with anthropology's recent ontological turn, the book considers whether metaphors reveal significant differences in conceptions of human-animal relations, the human-animal contrast, and human understanding of other humans in different parts of the world. An incredible catalogue of animal-based linguistic art and Nage verbal conventions, A Dog Pissing at the Edge of a Path illuminates essential features of metaphorical thought everywhere.
