Book Calendar of the Gormanston Register

Download or read book Calendar of the Gormanston Register written by James Mills and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calendar of the Gormanston Register: From the Original in the Possession of the Right Honourable the Viscount of Gormanston Sir Christopher must have looked upon the old deeds largely in the light of their antiquarian interest, for though the primary purpose of the book was to preserve in convenient form a record of the evidences of the titles of the family estates, he happily admitted into the collection transcripts of many early documents, including some of the largest entries in the book, which did not relate to property ever in the possession of his family, and which could have interested him only as an antiquary. Many of these early documents would have remained unknown to history but for Sir Christopher's happy preservation of them here. It will be convenient briefly to sketch the history of the Preston family and its connexions so far as they are illustrated in the documents preserved here. Book The Household Knights of King John

Download or read book The Household Knights of King John written by S. D. Church and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-07-22 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the medieval king was the helmsman of the ship of state, the royal household was the ship's engine. It comprised men from most ranks of society, from the great magnates of the realm to simple servants who looked after the day-to-day needs of the king and his court. English government, in both peace and war, was conducted through the royal household, amongst whom the most important men were the king's knights: socially elite, militarily pre-eminent, and indispensable for the workings of English medieval government. It is with these men during the reign of King John that this work is concerned.

Book Handbook and Select Calendar of Sources for Medieval Ireland in the National Archives of the United Kingdom

Download or read book Handbook and Select Calendar of Sources for Medieval Ireland in the National Archives of the United Kingdom written by Paul Dryburgh and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of English rule in Ireland in the late 12th century involved the introduction not only of foreign settlers, but also of administrative practices based on those of England. In the 13th century a chancery, an exchequer, and courts of law centred on Dublin developed which produced written records of their operations. The fact that the lord of Ireland was also the king of England, and that every English subject in Ireland had the right to appeal directly to the king, meant that Irish affairs were also well represented in the records produced by the English government at Westminster. These three sets of records were created and kept independently by both administrations, but a series of disasters stretching from the 13th century to the 20th means that almost all of the Irish archive has been lost. Fortunately, the National Archives of the United Kingdom, based at Kew in London, continues to hold a wealth of material relating to Ireland in the medieval centuries. This book provides a guide to records which reflect many facets of this period in Irish history, including relations between natives and settlers, the church, life on the manor, trade and commerce, land-holding, Anglo-Irish relations, and the operation of the law. It should serve as the starting-point for future research into many aspects of the medieval Irish past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 21st Century Medievalisms. Between the Global and Individual is an edited volume consisting of 14 chapters by scholars interested in contemporary medievalisms across the world. It is a timely contribution to the growing scholarship on medievalisms offering chapters that consider both the individual experiences of medievalisms, as well as those of societies and cultures at large. The chapters of the book are grouped into three parts, the first explores stereotypes and myths in medievalisms; the second examines medievalisms that speak to particular communities and audiences; and the third studies how medievalisms are impacted by or stimulate conversations of politics and gender. These chapters all reflect a growing interest in medievalisms, and the appreciation of how they are present, materialise and evolve in different contexts and offers insights into medievalisms in politics, popular culture, social activism and more. Throughout the book, examples and case studies demonstrate how medievalisms in the modern age are at times individual experiences, at other times global phenomena and sometimes are in between. Therefore these medievalisms can speak to different audiences at the same time, showcasing how the Middle Ages and their memory continue to be a pertinent topic of study within the wider field of medieval studies.
