Book Principles and Methods of Municipal Administration

Download or read book Principles and Methods of Municipal Administration written by William Bennett Munro and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Municipal Administration This volume deals with the actual management of municipal business, especially in the United States. It is intended to supplement the author's book on The Government of American Cities, which was published three years ago. Accordingly, it has to do with functions rather than with framework; its aim is to show how various city departments are organized, what work they have to do, and what problems they usually encounter in getting things done. The subject is a large one, of course; and much has been written about it during the last dozen years. Nearly all of these writings, however, fall into two definite categories : either they are general surveys of the most elementary character, or they are technical treatises which cover in great detail some single branch of municipal work such as street paving, water supply, or waste disposal. Between these two extremes the present volume tries to steer a middle course. It does not attempt to touch upon every phase of city administration, yet the various chapters do include a substantial part of the entire field, and they endeavor to give the reader something more than a mere glimpse of how the problems of a modern city are being handled to-day. It is to be remembered, however, that methods of municipal administration differ so widely from city to city and are so continually in process of change that generalizations are apt to be faulty or misleading. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new way forward for sustainable quality of life in cities of all sizes Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Build American Prosperity is a book of forward-thinking ideas that breaks with modern wisdom to present a new vision of urban development in the United States. Presenting the foundational ideas of the Strong Towns movement he co-founded, Charles Marohn explains why cities of all sizes continue to struggle to meet their basic needs, and reveals the new paradigm that can solve this longstanding problem. Inside, you’ll learn why inducing growth and development has been the conventional response to urban financial struggles—and why it just doesn’t work. New development and high-risk investing don’t generate enough wealth to support itself, and cities continue to struggle. Read this book to find out how cities large and small can focus on bottom-up investments to minimize risk and maximize their ability to strengthen the community financially and improve citizens’ quality of life. Develop in-depth knowledge of the underlying logic behind the “traditional” search for never-ending urban growth Learn practical solutions for ameliorating financial struggles through low-risk investment and a grassroots focus Gain insights and tools that can stop the vicious cycle of budget shortfalls and unexpected downturns Become a part of the Strong Towns revolution by shifting the focus away from top-down growth toward rebuilding American prosperity Strong Towns acknowledges that there is a problem with the American approach to growth and shows community leaders a new way forward. The Strong Towns response is a revolution in how we assemble the places we live.

Book Municipal Reform Through Revision of Business Methods New York City Classic Reprint

Download or read book Municipal Reform Through Revision of Business Methods New York City Classic Reprint written by Bureau of Municipal Research and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Municipal Reform Through Revision of Business Methods, New York City The following illustrations are but samples of the reforms in New York City's methods of administration that have been proceeding steadily for four years and that in the past six months have been phenomenal in both number and importance. For every illustration here given scores might easily be given. Many of the chief divisions of government are not even mentioned, as we have chosen types of advance step from conditions more generally familiar to the public. At the Budget Exhibit to be given in October, 1910, by city officials themselves, a complete list of economies and improvements will be graphically and convincingly displayed. So many and so varied have been the changes, and so numerous and disconnected, that it has been impossible for the public to appreciate their magnitude or their relation to one another. Of these changes the editor of the St. Paul Dispatch and Pioneer Press has said: "New York City is getting closer than any other city in America to the ideal of municipal administration where unit cost can be determined and its reasonableness considered." What should not be forgotten for one moment is that at best only beginnings have been made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
