Book The Jurassic of Denmark and Greenland

Download or read book The Jurassic of Denmark and Greenland written by Jon R. Ineson and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 1002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jurassic of Denmark and adjacent areas occurs mostly in the subsurface and research has thus focussed on the wealth of borehole and reflection seismic data resulting from over thirty years of hydrocarbon exploration. The Jurassic of East Greenland, in contrast, is exposed in spectacular cliffs along fjords and mountainsides and has come to be regarded as a unique field laboratory, particularly amongst those working on the Norwegian shelf--the conjugate margin of East Greenland. This bulletin presents the results of a period of intensive research into the Jurassic in the late 1980s and 1990s. Following detailed chronostratigraphic and biostratigraphic reviews of the Jurassic of Northwest Europe, the successions of Denmark and East Greenland are subjected to a range of stratigraphic, sedimentological, structural and geochemical studies that together provide the basis for a detailed comparison of the Jurassic evolution of the East Greenland and Danish sedimentary basins.

Book Radioactive Waste Confinement

Download or read book Radioactive Waste Confinement written by S. Norris and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is internationally accepted that the safest and most sustainable option for managing radioactive waste is geological disposal, utilizing both engineering and geology to isolate the waste and contain the radioactivity. This Special Publication contains 25 scientific studies presented at the 6th conference on ‘Clays in natural and engineered barriers for radioactive waste confinement’ held in Brussels, Belgium in 2015. The conference and this resulting volume cover many of the aspects of clay characterization and behaviour considered at various temporal and spatial scales relevant to the confinement of radionuclides in clay, from basic phenomenological process descriptions to the global understanding of performance and safety at repository and geological scales. The papers in this volume consider research into argillaceous media under the following topic areas: large-scale geological characterization; general strategy for clay-based disposal systems; geomechanics; mass transfer; bentonite evolution and gas transfer. The collection of different topics presented in this Special Publication demonstrates the diversity of geological repository research.

Book Glaciogenic Reservoirs and Hydrocarbon Systems

Download or read book Glaciogenic Reservoirs and Hydrocarbon Systems written by M. Huuse and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2012 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Glaciogenic reservoirs and hydrocarbon systems occur intermittently throughout the stratigraphic record, with particular prominence in Neoproterozoic, Late Ordovician, Permo-Carboniferous and Late Cenozoic strata. Recent interest in glaciogenic successions has been fuelled by hydrocarbon discoveries in ancient glaciogenic reservoirs in North Africa, the Middle East, Australia and South America. Glaciogenic deposits of Pleistocene age are noteworthy for their content of groundwater onshore and potentially prospective and/or hazardous gas accumulations offshore. The abundant imprints of Pleistocene glaciations in both hemispheres can be used to reconstruct complex histories of repeated ice cover and retreat, and glacier-bed interactions, thus informing our view on the dynamics of older ice caps and predictions of future glaciations. This volume aims to provide a better understanding of glaciogenic processes, their stratigraphic record and reservoir characteristics of glaciogenic deposits. The book comprises 3 overview papers and 16 original case studies of Neoproterozoic to Pleistocene successions on 6 continents and will be of interest to sedimentologists, glaciologists, geophysicists, hydrologists and petroleum geologists alike."-- P. 4 of cover.

Book Petroleum Geology of NW Europe

Download or read book Petroleum Geology of NW Europe written by B. Levell and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the Geological Society on behalf of PGC Ltd. (1 hardback volume in slipcase). The 8th Conference on the Petroleum Geology of NW Europe was held in September 2015 and marked the 50th anniversary of the first commercial discovery offshore in the North Sea (West Sole, in September 1965). Its focus was ‘50 Years of Learning – a Platform for Present Value and Future Success’ and its objective was to provide an update on discoveries, developments, technologies and geological concepts from the region. The 39 extensively illustrated technical papers cover the full width of recent activity and are divided into the following sections: Plays and fairways; Play assessment; Recent successes and learnings from failures; Infrastructure-led exploration and development; Late-life fields, re-development and the ‘next life’; Onshore exploration and development. The proceedings volume follows the format of many of the previous conferences since the first in 1974. Collectively these provide a unique documentation of the discovery and development of several NW European hydrocarbon provinces. The volume will be of interest to all geoscientists involved in exploration and development in NW Europe. It provides a fascinating overview of how creativity can continue to reveal hidden resources in an area that has been called ‘mature’ for at least the last 20 of its 50-year history.

Book Glacially Triggered Faulting

Download or read book Glacially Triggered Faulting written by Holger Steffen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glacially triggered faulting describes movement of pre-existing faults caused by a combination of tectonic and glacially induced isostatic stresses. The most impressive fault-scarps are found in northern Europe, assumed to be reactivated at the end of the deglaciation. This view has been challenged as new faults have been discovered globally with advanced techniques such as LiDAR, and fault activity dating has shown several phases of reactivation thousands of years after deglaciation ended. This book summarizes the current state-of-the-art research in glacially triggered faulting, discussing the theoretical aspects that explain the presence of glacially induced structures and reviews the geological, geophysical, geodetic and geomorphological investigation methods. Written by a team of international experts, it provides the first global overview of confirmed and proposed glacially induced faults, and provides an outline for modelling these stresses and features. It is a go-to reference for geoscientists and engineers interested in ice sheet-solid Earth interaction.

Book Geomechanical Controls on Fracture Development in Chalk and Marl in the Danish North Sea

Download or read book Geomechanical Controls on Fracture Development in Chalk and Marl in the Danish North Sea written by Michael John Welch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-23 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes new discoveries on fracturing in chalk. Based on studies on the Danish North Sea, this book shows how observations from outcrop analogues, core and seismic data can be used to characterize the density, distribution and geometry of natural fractures in chalk and marl. Laboratory experiments on chalk samples reveal the controls on the geomechanical properties of chalk and thus on the growth of natural fractures. Finally, various modeling techniques are employed to investigate the mechanical deformation in the chalk structures of the Danish North Sea and to predict fracture distribution and geometry in the subsurface. An understanding of fracture density, distribution and geometry is essential for planning efficient fluid extraction or injection strategies and CO2 sequestration. This book provides the necessary knowledge.

Book Deformation of Glacial Materials

Download or read book Deformation of Glacial Materials written by Alex Maltman and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2000 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow of glacier ice can produce structures that are striking and beautiful. Associated sediments too can develop spectacular deformation structures, and examples are remarkably well preserved in Quaternary deposits. This collection of papers addresses how the methods for unravelling deformation structures evolved by structural geologists can be used for glacial materials, and the opportunities offered to structural geologists by glacial materials for studying deformation in rocks.

Book Fishes and the Break up of Pangaea

Download or read book Fishes and the Break up of Pangaea written by Lionel Cavin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2008 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, in honour of Peter L. Forey, is about fishes as palaeobiogeographic indicators in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. The last 250 million years in the history of Earth have witnessed the break-up of Pangaea, affecting the biogeography of organisms. Fishes occupy almost all freshwater and marine environments, making them a good tool to assess palaeogeographic models. The volume begins with studies of Triassic chondrichthyans and lungfishes, with reflections on Triassic palaeogeography. Phylogeny and distribution of Late Jurassic neoselachians and basal teleosts are broached, and are followed by five papers about the Cretaceous, dealing with SE Asian sharks, South American ray-finned fishes and coelacanths, European characiforms, and global fish palaeogeography. Then six papers cover Tertiary subjects, such as bony tongues, eels, cypriniforms and coelacanths. There is generally a good fit between fish phylogenies and the evolution of the palaeogeographical pattern, although a few discrepancies question details of current palaeogeographic models and/or some aspects of fish phylogeny.
