Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Yoke: A Romance of Bulgarian Liberty The other scenes Of action - Klissoura, Karlovo, Kop rivshtitsa, and the rest - appear in the course of this romance under their real names, and are the towns Of a lovely pastoral district. The story passes in the heart Of the famous Valley Of Roses, where the attar is made and over those billowy meadows, heavy with the redundant rose, over the hurrying water-courses, the groves of walnut and pear trees, the white cupolas ringed about with poplars, the little sparkling cities - over all this foreground Of rich fertility there rises the huge bulwark Of the inaccessible Balkan, snow-clad all though the tropic summer, and feeding the flowery plain with the wealth of its cascades and torrents. Book Observations on Bulgarian Affairs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Observations on Bulgarian Affairs Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on Bulgarian Affairs A desire to visit some of the scenes of the late Russo-Turkish war, to see the condition of the country over which it had passed, and to witness the manner in which the people were settling down to the enjoyment of their new liberty, induced me, in company with two friends, to undertake a journey through Bulgaria and Eastern Roumelia during the months of May and June 1879. The time was one of special interest for such a journey, for the country was then being evacuated by the Russian army, and the government was being transferred from the provisional administration to the Bulgarian officials. We had opportunities, therefore, of noticing the relations between the Russians and the Bulgarians, and the manner in which the latter exercised the powers for the first time entrusted to them. Book With Gypsies in Bulgaria Classic Reprint

Download or read book With Gypsies in Bulgaria Classic Reprint written by Andreas Andreas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Gypsies in Bulgaria To publish so long an account of so short a journey may be to risk classification with the insolent and over-bold globe-trotter, who 'does kingdoms in days and writes books upon them in weeks. Yet, at the time, the excursion seemed unusual and romantic enough to amuse my friends; and since then it may have acquired a wider interest owing to the fact that a multitude of my countrymen, and I myself, have adopted in Flanders, almost perforce though not unwillingly, and for an indefinitely long period, a habit of life resembling that which I lived in Bulgaria for pleasure. Some of those who, before the days of degrading advertisement and shamefully disguised compulsion, undertook eagerly the burden of national defence, have been my comrades for more than a year in the publicity of camps and bivouacs, enjoying that peculiarly tender intimacy and un selfishness, exercising that wonderful forbearance and tolerance, which, rare alike in the city streets and country mansions of so-called civilization, attain their majestic perfection, the universal brotherhood which Mohammedans both preach and practice, through long association in the field, and after common trials summer's heat and dust, winter's cold and mud, dis comfort, hunger, thirst, fatigue, sickness, danger, and often heroism. It is surely a strange war, where opponents at death-grips barter bully-beef for brandy' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ferdinand of Bulgaria: The Amazing Career of a Shoddy Czar He wore, it may be remembered, an Astrakan cap and coat; and the day was a warm one. His fat figure swayed from side to side in the saddle, and he looked thoroughly frightened of the magnificent horse he bestrode with so ill a grace. The perspiration dropped down his flabby cheeks. He was not in the sort of company where he was calculated to shine. All around him were princes who would not be seen speaking to him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulgarian Horrors The first remark that I would make on this passage is, that your feelings against the Ottomans have led you to do more than justice to a political rival. You surely cannot mean seriously to exclude from your picturesque category the Right Honourable the Earl of Beaconsfield, whose fine feelings in one part of your pamphlet (p. You jeer at, and whom in another (p. You accuse of ignorance or brutal calumny. Your indulgence in restricting your Inferno to the exclu sive possession of the Ottomans is a violation of poetical consistency. Dante, if he had shared your views, would certam have relegated the monster in question to the very last circle of damnation, unless indeed, as is more than probable, he had described a new one for his special benefit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Balkans: A History of Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Rumania, Turkey The authors Of this volume have not worked in conjunc tion. Widely separated, engaged on other duties, and pressed for time, we have had no opportunity for interchange of views. Each must be held responsible, therefore, for his own section alone. If there be any discrepancies in our writings (it is not unlikely in so disputed a field of history) we can only regret an unfortunate result of the circum stances. Owing to rapid change in the relations Of our country to the several Balkan peoples, the tone of a section written earlier may differ from that Of another written later. It may be well to state that the sections on Serbia and Bulgaria were finished before the decisive Balkan develop ments of the past two months. Those on Greece and Rumania represent only a little later stage of the evolution. That on Turkey, compiled between one mission abroad and another, was the latest to be finished. If our sympathies are not all the same, nor given equally to friends and foes, none of us would find it possible to indite a Hymn of Hate about any Balkan people. Every one of these peoples, on whatever side he be fighting to-day, has a past worthy of more than our respect and interwoven in some intimate way with our history. That any one of them is arrayed against us to-day is not to be laid entirely or chiefly at its own door. They are all fine peoples who have not obtained their proper places in the sun. The best of the Osmanli nation, the Anatolian peasantry, has yet to make its physical and moral qualities felt under civilized conditions. As for the rest - the Serbs and the Bulgars, who have enjoyed brief moments of barbaric glory in their past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pawns of Liberty: A Story of Fighting Yesterdays in the Balkans A good story should require no preface, and yet a word of explanation may add to the interest of the reader's acquaintance with the lives and characters revealed below. While the writers do not pose as the chroni clers of a true story, they are not narrating the imaginary troubles Of an imagined folk some where southeast Of Vienna. Pawns of Liberty has Macedonia-of - yesterday for its setting, but a good deal of its inspiration comes from the actual history of Bulgaria-of - the-day - before. The Bal kan War, and the revolts of the Bulgar natives in Macedonia which preceded it, only continued the Bulgarian struggle for liberation which made the sixties and seventies of thealast century years of tragic glory in the Balkans. The children of the Bulgarian '76 became the leaders of the Mace donian revolts during the past two decades. For Macedonia and Thrace are inhabited largely by Bulgars, and the revolution was naturally a Bul garian movement. Book The Chronicles of a Virgin Fortress

Download or read book The Chronicles of a Virgin Fortress written by William V. Herbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronicles of a Virgin Fortress: Being Some Unrecorded Chapters of Turkish and Bulgarian History Gradually I came to extend the sphere of my labour, as the knowledge grew upon me that at least one other chapter of modern history in con nection with that much-fought-for town is un recorded: the attacks of the Servians in 1885 and the heroic defence of the Bulgarian garrison. That, after I had decided to include this event, I had to make my work comprehend also the Turco Servian War of 1876 was almost a matter of necessity. From this to brief accounts of the part which Widdin and Calafat played in the Oriental War, 18 5 3 and 1854, and in the russo-turkish campaign of 1828 and 1829, and of Pasvan Oq's remarkable rebellion in the beginning of the present century - all episodes practically unknown to the average reader - it was but a few steps more; and a general, though unavoidably sketchy, retrospect of the history of the town, since its foundation by the Romans, followed in natural sequence. This is the evolution of the present work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
