Book General Instability of Orthotropically Stiffened Cylinders

Download or read book General Instability of Orthotropically Stiffened Cylinders written by C. Lakshmikantham and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a general program to determine the applicability of linear orthotropic theory to the design of cylindrical shells under various loading conditions, a theoretical and experimental investigation was performed on the general instability of orthotropic cylinders under bending and combined axial compression and bending loading. Based on a simple approximation for the asymmetric buckling pattern, theoretical results suitable for design use were obtained for the buckling of orthotropic cylinders for both bending and combined loading conditions. It was shown that the buckling stress for orthotropic cylinders under bending or axial compression loading are equal which agrees with previous results for isotropic cylinders. Theoretical results were evaluated by means of a series of careful experiments performed on orthotropically stiffened cylinders designed to fail in the elastic general instability mode. For both bending loading and the combined axial and bending loading condition, experimental results were in good agreement with the theory.

Book Buckling of Eccentrically Stiffened Orthotropic Cylinders

Download or read book Buckling of Eccentrically Stiffened Orthotropic Cylinders written by David L. Block and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small-deflection theory for buckling of stiffened orthotropic cylinders which includes eccentricity (one-sided) effects in the stiffeners is derived from energy principles. Buckling solutions corresponding to classical simple- support boundary conditions are obtained for both orthotropic and isotropic stiffened cylinders subjected to any combination of axial and circumferential loading. Comparable solutions for stiffened flat plates are also given. Sample calculations of predicted compressive buckling loads obtained from the solutions are compared with existing solutions for ring-stiffened corrugated cylinders, ring-and-stringer-stiffened cylinders, and longitudinally (stringer) stiffened cylinders. The calculations demonstrate that eccentricity effects are large even with very large diameter cylinders of practical proportions and should be accounted for in any buckling analysis.

Book The General Instability of Ring stiffened Corrugated Cylinders Under Axial Compression

Download or read book The General Instability of Ring stiffened Corrugated Cylinders Under Axial Compression written by John N. Dickson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is presented to determine the general instability load of a ring-stiffened corrugated cylinder under axial compression. This method is developed using linear small deflection theory. The stiffness properties of the rings are uniformly distributed along the cylinder and the eccentricity of the rings with respect to the corrugation centerline is taken into account. Analytical and experimental results are compared. In this comparison good agreement is obtained for cylinders loaded in pure compression. For the cylinders subjected to bending or a combination of bending and compression the analytical calculations are conservative. A computer program for the application of this method has been developed. The program and an explanation of its notation are included in this report.

Book Thermal Buckling Analysis for Stiffened Orthotropic Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Thermal Buckling Analysis for Stiffened Orthotropic Cylindrical Shells written by L. K. Chang and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory for thermal buckling of an orthotropic, multilayered, stiffened cylindrical shell is presented. The theory includes the effects of eccentricity of layers and stiffening, and deformations prior to buckling. It is sufficiently general to account for discrete rings and averaged properties of longitudinal stiffening, as well as arbitrary temperature distributions through the thickness of the shell and depth of the stiffeners. Two computer programs are described corresponding to solutions for buckling obtained by using finite differences and determinant plotting or modal iteration. Computed results for thermal buckling of unstiffened and ring-stiffened shells are presented and are in reasonable agreement with published results. The interaction of thermal loading and axial compression in two large diameter stiffened shells representative of a launch vehicle interstage and a preliminary supersonic transport fuselage design is investigated. Results indicate that budding can occur in both structures at a realistic temperature under thermal loading alone.

Book General Instability of Orthotropically Stiffened Cylinders

Download or read book General Instability of Orthotropically Stiffened Cylinders written by Roger Milligan and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general applicability of orthotropic stability theory to aerospace shell structures was examined experimentally. For this purpose a series of careful experiments were performed on orthotropically stiffened cylinders designed to fail in the elastic general instability mode under three separate loading conditions: axial compression, torsion and hydrostatic pressure. Experimental results obtained during the program verified that for all loading conditions considered linear orthotropic theory results in accurate predictions of cylinder strength. As a result of observed discrepancies between experiment and previously existing theory for longitudinally stiffened cylinders under axial compression, theoretical studies were initiated which resulted in the discovery of a new asymmetric failure mode for this cylinder configuration. Based on this new failure mode, good correlation between experiment and theory was obtained except when the longitudinal stiffened cylinder configurations approached that corresponding to an isotropic cylinder. Other theoretical investigations performed during the program established that cylinder boundary conditions have a pronounced effect on the buckling strength of orthotropic cylinders under hydrostatic pressure loading.
