Book excerpt: The man that broke the door down was Dancing Bear, a friend of Foster. After finding out that Foster was all right, Dancing Bear and his braves left for their village. In a few days, Buck and Foster left to follow the map to the mine. On the way, they stopped at Dancing Bears village. For the first time, Buck met the beautiful daughter of Chief Dancing Bear. They fell in love with each other in the two days that they spent together. But Buck and Foster had to leave. They got trapped on top of a mountain in a fierce snowstorm, but they found a cave and held up there for a month. They finally escaped down the mountain to the town of Telluride, where they spent the winter. In the spring, they set out again and found what they were looking fora silver mine. They mined some ore and headed back to Durango. On the way back, they were stopped by the man that had killed Jeb, Bucks great-grandfather. They had a gunfight, and Buck came out on top. They got back to Durango and hired men to work in the silver mine. Everyone decided to call Buck Silver Buck. They reached the mine, but Walters was there trying to find the mine. Their men had a gun battle, and Buck and his men took over their mine. They mined all summer and winter, and the next spring, Silver Buck sent for his mother and father to come to Colorado with some men and five thousand heads of cattle to start a cattle ranch. While waiting for the cattle, Silver Buck and Red Bird, Dancing Bears daughter, got married. Silver Buck bought all the land south of Durango to the border of New Mexico. Silver Buck and Red Bird went to meet his mother and father near Santa Fe. Red Bird was worried that his parents wouldnt like her. She had worried for nothing for his parents loved her and how honest she was. When they got back to Durango with all the cattle, after nearly losing them all to the heat of the desert, they had a big shindig with all the townspeople and the Indians. Silver Buck then showed his parents their new home, as well as his and Red Birds new home. They were as large as the homes back east. They even had indoor plumbing, to everyones surprise. Red Bird announced that she was with a child. About eight months later, she has Little Silver, which was what everyone called him but Buck. The boy spent time with both grandfathers. He learned both worlds, the one of the Indians and that of the white mans. Buck thought that his son would turn out to be a very good man because he knew and understood both worlds. Buck let Foster run the mine, and he and his father operated the ranch. Life was good for the Taylor family and the town of Durango. This was when Red Bird said she was going to have another child. They had a little daughter this time. During the four years that have passed, Buck had had a dream three times. In this dream, he is riding up to a ranch house, and he sees a woman with long black hair with a four-year-old boy on her right and a two-year-old girl on her left. One day, Buck was riding up to the house at sundown, and there on the front porch was Red Bird, and to her right was Little Silver and to her left is their two-year-old daughter. He thought to himself that, yes, dreams can come true.

Book excerpt: Blocking for the Gipper, Lawrence "Buck" Shaw was one of Knute Rockne's star players at Notre Dame during 1919 through 1921. However, it was his nearly four decades of college and pro coaching that earned him esteem. Viewed as a "player's coach," Shaw was talented at relating to young men and molding them into a winning team. His college teams won two Sugar bowls. Shaw's successful coaching with the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles also played an integral role in helping the NFL grow into a billion-dollar business. A contemporary of Vince Lombardi, Shaw's Eagles won the NFL championship in the pre-Super Bowl era. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Shaw never received serious consideration for enshrinement at Canton for his professional career. This complete biography tells the colorful story of Shaw's college and pro years, shedding light on Shaw's over-looked achievements in the professional ranks, which saw him earn a higher winning percentage a half-dozen Hall of Fame coaches.

Book Crow Hopper s Big Guide to Buck Stopping

Download or read book Crow Hopper s Big Guide to Buck Stopping written by Keith Hosman and published by Keith Hosman. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control: Either you have it--or you don't. Two words, "Either Or," are particularly appropriate when describing, owning, and handling the great majority of horses that buck. Either they do it because they're scared or because they're defiant. Either you're the type of person who takes on the challenge with a gleam in your eye or you have a bad stomach over the very idea. Either your barn friends think you should sell the animal because they feel embarrassed for you and your odd excuses for why you exercise it via hand walks and turnout and never a ride on the trail -- or they're pretty sure you don't realize the risk you take each time you hop aboard and they're considering an equestrian intervention. And either you've got a plan to fix it--or you do not. Make that "did not." "Did not have a plan." Because now you do. You've got this guide and so you've got a plan and with it a solution. This book, "Crow Hopper's Big Guide to Buck Stopping," falls into four sections: Section I: Learn the ground work required to begin snuffing out this deep-rooted issue. Given that "you ride the horse you lead," you'll begin your fix with your feet planted safely on terra firma. You'll gain confidence--and control. Section II: Learn to see a buck coming and what to do if it happens, then get back in the saddle for exercise after exercise designed to put you in charge and prevent future problems. Section III: Perform exercises geared to address immediate and specific bucking issues: Bucking into the canter, how to deal with your own fear, crossing obstacles, the horse that crow hops when first introduced to the saddle. Section IV: Training appropriate for every horse and rider--and an absolute must for those schooling the bucking horse. (See the Table of Contents for a complete listing.) Your horse isn't going to buck if you have control. Your task, then, becomes gaining that control, understanding when you have it, knowing when you don't, working to get it. Table of Contents: Section I, Ground Training - When You Really Lose It: If your horse went ballistic last week, it didn't just "happen." Spot the signals. - Where I'd Start: Bucking horse owners, here's something you can do with your horse that advances his training, is low risk, and fun. - Whoever Moves First, Loses (Or, "How to Get Respect"): Secure your rightful spot as leader in your "herd of two." - Bridle Work from the Ground: Develop control over your horse's individual body parts and gain respect - Reverse of Respect: Backing your horse is an excellent way to affirm (or establish) your position as leader - Lungeing a Horse for Added Control: With added training for the bucking horse, here is the how, when, and why of lunge-line training Section II, Fixes from the saddle and preventative medicine - Your Individual Prescription - Ride Where You Can, Not Where You Can't - Core Exercises (Introduced) - Despooking: Scary Things - Despooking: Scary Moments - Getting Back On: What to Do If the Horse Bucks - Hip Control - Classic Serpentine - Softening - Calm Down Now: Drop Your Horse's Head on Command - Speed Control for Mind Control - Shoulder Control - Train Your Horse to Travel Straight Section III, Questions answered: Specific and immediate fixes for the bucking horse owner - Horses that Buck When First Introduced to the Saddle - How Can I Overcome My Fear After Being Bucked Off? - My horse wants to buck or crow hop when going from a trot to a canter. - Crossing Creeks and Scary Stuff Section IV, Training for every horse and rider--and an absolute must for those schooling the bucking horse - Each Time You Mount Up, Do This First - How to Pick Up Your Reins Like a Pro - Training Magic: Release on the Thought - Reins Tell Direction, Legs Tell Speed - Talking Horse - Perfect the First Time - How Do I Keep My Horse's Attention? - Is the Cinch Strap Causing the Trouble? - Is My Horse Hard to Train... Because of His Feet? - The Sours: Buddy and Barney
