Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bryan, Sewall and Honest Money Will Bring Prosperity William jennings bryan, statesman and presidential candidate, was born in Salem, Marion county, Illinois, March 19, 1860, son Of Silas Lillard and Maria Jen mings Bryan. His first American ancestor came from Ire land, and settled in the tidewater section Of Virginia. It is known of this pioneer emigrant that he stood as a repre sentative citizen of the state, and that his descendants were classed among the well-to-do familiesengaged in the cultivation Of the soil. They took active interest in the politics of the commonwealth as Democrats, and represented their section in county and state affairs. As farmers, the Bryans Of Virginia were conspicuous for in dustry, frugality and hospitality. They were intensely rellglous, and as leading members of the Baptish church were looked upon as safe advisers on the social, political and moral questions Of their day. In 1752 Joseph T. Bryan left the tidewater section Of Virginia and pushed westward. He located on the side Of a moun tain, Where he found all the conditions necessary for a settler's home. From the site selected for his future dwelling, he looked down through a beautiful valley made fertile by the mountain stream that found its way to the bosom of the Rappahannock. Here he put up a log cabin after the fashion of the settlers, and fitted it for the home of his family, This house still stands as an ell to a more pretentious dwelling on the Side Of Oventop mountain, at the base of Marvey's Rock, the highest peak of the Blue Ridge mountains. About half a mile westward from the old homestead, on a narrow, rocky road, the Bryan meet ing-house, a large, rambling structure, still stands In about the same condition as When the family of the great-great. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bryan, Sewall and Honest Money Will Bring Prosperity The address delivered by Mr. William P. St. John on accepting the permanent chairmanship of the National Bimetallic party at St. Louis, July 22, 1896. By William P. St. John, M. A. It is among the first principles in finance that the value of each dollar expressed in prices, depends upon the total number of dollars in circulation. The plane of prices is high when the number of dollars in circulation is great in proportion to the number of things to be exchanged by means of dollars, and low when the dollars are proportionately few. The plane of prices at present and for some time past is and has been ruinously low. The increase of our population at about two millions a year, scattered over our immense territory, calls for increasing exchanges and thereby demands an increasing number of dollars in circulation. The increase in the number of dollars when dollars are confined to gold is not sufficiently rapid to meet the growth of our exchanges. The consequence is a growing value of dollars or a diminishing value of everything else expressed in dollars; which is to say a tendency toward constantly declining prices. The fountain-head of our prosperity has run dry. Our farmers all over the country have endured the depression in prices, until they get about $8 or $9 per acre for an expenditure of $10 per acre and the like. Their credit is exhausted at the country stores. The country store ceases to order from the city merchant, the city merchant reduces his demand upon the manufacturer. Manufactures are curtailed. Book An Honest Dollar

Download or read book An Honest Dollar written by David Jayne Hill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Honest Dollar: The Basis of Prosperity 1. Present Importance of the Subject. - The diametrical opposition of the platforms adopted by the two great political parties of the United States at their recent conventions, upon the question of the national currency, places the monetary issue in the front line of battle for the presidential election of 1896. The American people are once more called before the judgment-seat of history, as they were in 1861. Those who understand the character of American citizens believe that nothing is necessary beyond a clear and truthful presentation of the facts and principles involved in this controversy, in order to secure a just and honorable settlement of the question, But it is evident that adequate comprehension of the momentous issues involved in the inflation of the national currency, and especially in a sudden change of the standard of value, is not to be acquired without serious and patient investigation on the part of every citizen. It is, therefore, of the highest importance that the essential elements of this great problem be so presented to the public mind that every man of intelligence and ordinary knowledge of arithmetic may form his own conclusions regarding the justice and expediency of the propositions put forward by the party platforms. The present sketch is intended to supply a brief and intelligible statement of the whole question at issue between the parties, without partisan bias, and with absolute fidelity to the facts. 2. The Nature and Uses of Money. - The exchange of commodities is essential to the existence of civilized life. Division of labor gives to all the great advantage of profiting by the special skill and facilities of each. In a civilized state of society, almost all the products of every creator of value are offered for exchange. When they are exchanged directly against each other, as wheat for cloth, the exchange is called barter. When the exchange is effected by the medium of some common measure of value, as gold or silver, it is called a sale and the amount of the medium agreed upon is called the price. Such a common measure of value is called money. It is evident that a medium of exchange would not be accepted unless it had some definite relation to a standard of value. Price is, therefore, partly a question of arithmetic, which determines how many times a unit of value is to be taken in order to be an equivalent medium of exchange; but it is primarily a question of value, that is, it has relation to some object of desire. Whatever this object of desire may be, in order to be a good medium of exchange it must be (1) Measurable, so as to be capable of arithmetical treatment;(2) Divisible, so as to be separable into arithmetical parts and again united in multiples of those parts;(3) Homogenises, so as to be always the same thing, without variation in quality from time to time; (4)Portable, so that it can be removed from place to place, and thus really serve as a medium of exchange;(5) Durable, so that it will not easily perish during possession; (6)Stable in value, so that it will have the same purchasing power when it is paid as when it is promised; and(7) Recognizable so that it can always be known and its value readily ascertained by sight. In practice we have two kinds of mediums of exchange, both of which are called money, but which need to be clearly distinguished. Real Money is always a commodity of some kind. Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book The Spell of the Sensuous

Download or read book The Spell of the Sensuous written by David Abram and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the International Lannan Literary Award for Nonfiction Animal tracks, word magic, the speech of stones, the power of letters, and the taste of the wind all figure prominently in this intellectual tour de force that returns us to our senses and to the sensuous terrain that sustains us. This major work of ecological philosophy startles the senses out of habitual ways of perception. For a thousand generations, human beings viewed themselves as part of the wider community of nature, and they carried on active relationships not only with other people with other animals, plants, and natural objects (including mountains, rivers, winds, and weather patters) that we have only lately come to think of as "inanimate." How, then, did humans come to sever their ancient reciprocity with the natural world? What will it take for us to recover a sustaining relation with the breathing earth? In The Spell of the Sensuous David Abram draws on sources as diverse as the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, Balinese shamanism, Apache storytelling, and his own experience as an accomplished sleight-of-hand of magician to reveal the subtle dependence of human cognition on the natural environment. He explores the character of perception and excavates the sensual foundations of language, which--even at its most abstract--echoes the calls and cries of the earth. On every page of this lyrical work, Abram weaves his arguments with a passion, a precision, and an intellectual daring that recall such writers as Loren Eisleley, Annie Dillard, and Barry Lopez.

Book excerpt: "Ryken's Worldly Saints offers a fine introduction to seventeenth-century Puritanism in its English and American contexts. The work is rich in quotations from Puritan worthies and is ideally suited to general readers who have not delved widely into Puritan literature. It will also be a source of information and inspiration to those who seek a clearer understanding of the Puritan roots of American Christianity." -Harry Stout, Yale University "...the typical Puritans were not wild men, fierce and freaky, religious fanatics and social extremists, but sober, conscientious, and cultured citizens, persons of principle, determined and disciplined excelling in the domestic virtues, and with no obvious shortcomings save a tendency to run to words when saying anything important, whether to God or to a man. At last the record has been put straight." -J.I. Packer, Regent College "Worldly Saints provides a revealing treasury of primary and secondary evidence for understanding the Puritans, who they were, what they believed, and how they acted. This is a book of value and interest for scholars and students, clergy and laity alike." -Roland Mushat Frye, University of Pennsylvania "A very persuasive...most interesting book...stuffed with quotations from Puritan sources, almost to the point of making it a mini-anthology." -Publishers Weekly "With Worldly Saints, Christians of all persuasions have a tool that provides ready access to the vast treasures of Puritan thought." -Christianity Today "Ryken writes with a vigor and enthusiasm that makes delightful reading-never a dull moment." -Fides et Historia "Worldly Saints provides a valuable picture of Puritan life and values. It should be useful for general readers as well as for students of history and literature." -Christianity and Literature
