On the one hand, it demonstrates features which suggest institutional instability as well as elements that enhance the probability of secession. On the other hand, Belgium continues to exist as a federal system, based upon linguistic bipolarity. This linguistic bipolarity dominates Belgian politics and has shaped the design of Belgium's institutions as well as the Constitution's fundamental organising principles: concepts of federalism, democracy, separation of powers, constitutionalism and the rule of law. In this book, the institutional structure and the principles governing the Belgian constitutional system are explained in the light of its historical, demographic and political context. Linguistic bipolarity and its historical evolution explain the establishment of the Belgian State structure as a dual federalism, with exclusive powers, instruments for consensus making and obstruction, and elements of confederal decision making. It also explains the evolution in the concept of principles of democracy and the rule of law. Besides describing the devolutionary process, the book also incorporates two other elements that have shaped the Belgian constitutional landscape: fundamental rights and Europeanisation.

And in contrast to how superpowers wield their global influence, the Brussels Effect - a phrase first coined by Bradford in 2012- absolves the EU from playing a direct role in imposing standards, as market forces alone are often sufficient as multinational companies voluntarily extend the EU rule to govern their global operations. The Brussels Effect shows how the EU has acquired such power, why multinational companies use EU standards as global standards, and why the EU's role as the world's regulator is likely to outlive its gradual economic decline, extending the EU's influence long into the future.

From acquisition to disposal, the trajectories of the corpse changed under the influence of social policies, ideological tensions, religious sensitivities, cultures of death and broader changes in the field of medical ethics. To a certain extent, as this book argues, they started to treat the corpse as subject rather than object. Interweaving broad historical evolutions with detailed case studies, this book offers unique insights into a field dominated by Anglo-American perspectives, evaluating the similarities and differences within other European contexts.

Book excerpt: The European Community has largely been considered a predominantly secular project, bringing together the economic and political realms, while failing to mobilise the public voice and imagination of churchmen and the faithful. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, this is the first study to assess the political history of religious dialogue in the European Community. It challenges the widespread perception that churches started to engage with European institutions only after the 1979 elections to the European Parliament, by detailing close relations between churchmen and high-ranking officials in European institutions, immediately after the 1950 Schuman Declaration. Lucian N. Leustean demonstrates that Cold War divisions between East and West, and the very nature of the ecumenical movement, had a direct impact on the ways in which churches approached the European Community. He brings to light events and issues which have not previously been examined, such as the response of churches to the Schuman Plan, and the political mobilisation of church representations in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg. Leustean argues that the concept of a 'united Europe' has been impeded by competing national differences between religious and political institutions, having a long-standing legacy on the making of a fragmented European Community.

Ralph Bunche is one of the most prominent Black Americans of the twentieth century. He was not only a legendary diplomat, scholar, and civil rights leader, but also the first African American to obtain a political science Ph.D. from Harvard, and before the Second World War, he provided extensive research assistance to Gunnar Myrdal for his landmark work on race in America, An American Dilemma. He worked for the OSS--the precursor to the CIA--during the early years of the war as well as the State Department. Yet he is far better known for his diplomatic work at the United Nations, even though his many contributions and innovations have never received their full due. In The Absolutely Indispensable Man, Kal Raustiala tells the story of Bunche's dramatic life, from his early years in prewar Los Angeles to Harvard, Howard, the US State Department, and eventually the UN. As a high-ranking UN official, Bunche received the Nobel Peace Prize for his ground-breaking mediation of the first Arab-Israeli conflict in 1948-49. In the years to follow, he was a key player in many of the most important developments in the international order and did pioneering work for the UN on conflict management and the development of UN peacekeeping. But as Raustiala argues, his most enduring achievement was his work to dismantle the European empire. As a scholar and civil rights activist, Bunche perceptively saw colonialism as a central issue of the 20th century, and decolonization as a project of global racial justice. His work for the UN during the decolonization era--which stretched from the end of World War II to the 1960s--was crucially important, and Raustiala places it at the center of his account. From marching with Martin Luther King to advising presidents and prime ministers, Bunche shaped our world in lasting ways. This definitive biography gives him his due. It also reminds us that decolonization and the end of empire not only fundamentally transformed world politics, but also powerfully intersected with America's own civil rights struggle.
