Book excerpt: The main aim of the book is to give a review of all relevant information regarding a well-known and important problem of Feedback Arc Set (FAS). This review naturally also includes a history of the problem, as well as specific algorithms. To this point such a work does not exist: There are sources where one can find incomplete and perhaps untrustworthy information. With this book, information about FAS can be found easily in one place: formulation, description, theoretical background, applications, algorithms etc. Such a compendium will be of help to people involved in research, but also to people that want to quickly acquaint themselves with the problem and need reliable information. Thus research, professional work and learning can proceed in a more streamlined and faster way.

Book Knotted Surfaces and Their Diagrams

Download or read book Knotted Surfaces and Their Diagrams written by J. Scott Carter and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the authors develop the theory of knotted surfaces in analogy with the classical case of knotted curves in 3-dimensional space. In the first chapter knotted surface diagrams are defined and exemplified; these are generic surfaces in 3-space with crossing information given. The diagrams are further enhanced to give alternative descriptions. A knotted surface can be described as a movie, as a kind of labeled planar graph, or as a sequence of words in which successive words are related by grammatical changes. In the second chapter, the theory of Reidemeister moves is developed in the various contexts. The authors show how to unknot intricate examples using these moves. The third chapter reviews the braid theory of knotted surfaces. Examples of the Alexander isotopy are given, and the braid movie moves are presented. In the fourth chapter, properties of the projections of knotted surfaces are studied. Oriented surfaces in 4-space are shown to have planar projections without cusps and without branch points. Signs of triple points are studied. Applications of triple-point smoothing that include proofs of triple-point formulas and a proof of Whitney's congruence on normal Euler classes are presented. The fifth chapter indicates how to obtain presentations for the fundamental group and the Alexander modules. Key examples are worked in detail. The Seifert algorithm for knotted surfaces is presented and exemplified. The sixth chapter relates knotted surfaces and diagrammatic techniques to 2-categories. Solutions to the Zamolodchikov equations that are diagrammatically obtained are presented. The book contains over 200 illustrations that illuminate the text. Examples are worked out in detail, and readers have the opportunity to learn first-hand a series of remarkable geometric techniques.

Book Making Men Whole

  • Author : J. B. Phillips
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2012-07-01
  • ISBN : 162032346X
  • Pages : 75 pages

Download or read book Making Men Whole written by J. B. Phillips and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Contributor(s): John Bertram Phillips (1906-1982) was a Bible translator, writer, and clergyman. His work translating the New Testament made him one of Britain's most famous Bible communicators. He talked of the revelation received as he translated the New Testament, describing it as ""extraordinarily alive""--unlike any experience he had had with non-scriptural ancient texts. He referred to Scripture speaking to his condition in an ""uncanny way."" Phillips was a masterful apologist and defender of the Christian faith. He upheld the basic tenets of the faith, and was able to present them as fresh to the modern reader and hearer, much as he had done with his translation of the New Testament.

Book Hassler Whitney Collected Papers Volume I

Download or read book Hassler Whitney Collected Papers Volume I written by James Eelles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-02-07 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present here the mathematical papers of Hassler Whitney. This collection contains all the published papers, with the exception of some short announcements that Whitney did not wish to be included. We also include the introduction to his book Geometric Integration Theory, and one previously unpublished manuscript on the four-color problem. The papers are presented under some broad categories: graphs· and combinatorics, differentiable functions and singularities, analytic spaces, manifolds, bundles and characteristic classes, topology and algebraic topology, geometric integration theory. Whitney intended to write an introduction to this collection. Unfortunately he left us no manuscript at the time of his death, May 10, 1989. We had discussed the possibility of using his paper "Moscow 1935 - Topology moving toward America," written for the Centennial of the American Mathematical Society, as part of his introduction to this collection, an idea which he much liked. We therefore include this paper, which contains personal information as well as mathematical reflections, as Whitney's own introduction to these volumes. Whitney's mathematical style, like his personal style, was that of an explorer and pioneer. One of the pictures included in these volumes shows him as a mountain climber. In mathematics, he preferred to work on undeveloped areas: break new ground and build foundations. During the last twenty years of his life he concentrated his efforts on developing an educational system that builds on the natural tendency in children to be explorers.

Book Polyparallelogram Puzzles and Tiling Problems

Download or read book Polyparallelogram Puzzles and Tiling Problems written by Raymond R. Fletcher III and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical puzzle book which involves labeling vertices of a plane graph with elements from an abelian group G such that the labels applied to the bounding vertices of each region have the same sum in G. The plane graphs are those formed by the edges and vertices of various types of parallelograms fitted together edge to edge. We call these polyparallelograms. The polyparallelogram puzzles are organized into the following categories according to the types of parallelograms involved: (i) polysquares (or polyominoes; (ii) 60/120 rhombs; (iii) 36/144 and 72/108 rhombs (Penrose rhombs); (iv) various lattice parallelograms. The reader is introduced to the theory of polyparallelogram tilings of polygons, and challenged with problems and research questions at the end of each Chapter. All that is required of the elementary theory of graphs and abelian groups is included in the text. Also included are a variety of pure tiling problems involving nonparallelogram lattice quadrilaterals. “Polyparallelogram Puzzles and Tiling Problems” is a sequel to “Polycubes, Triangulations and Polyhexes over Zn” and features a similar type of puzzle but is more engaging mathematically.

Book Reasoning with Probabilistic and Deterministic Graphical Models

Download or read book Reasoning with Probabilistic and Deterministic Graphical Models written by Rina Dechter and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphical models (e.g., Bayesian and constraint networks, influence diagrams, and Markov decision processes) have become a central paradigm for knowledge representation and reasoning in both artificial intelligence and computer science in general. These models are used to perform many reasoning tasks, such as scheduling, planning and learning, diagnosis and prediction, design, hardware and software verification, and bioinformatics. These problems can be stated as the formal tasks of constraint satisfaction and satisfiability, combinatorial optimization, and probabilistic inference. It is well known that the tasks are computationally hard, but research during the past three decades has yielded a variety of principles and techniques that significantly advanced the state of the art. In this book we provide comprehensive coverage of the primary exact algorithms for reasoning with such models. The main feature exploited by the algorithms is the model's graph. We present inference-based, message-passing schemes (e.g., variable-elimination) and search-based, conditioning schemes (e.g., cycle-cutset conditioning and AND/OR search). Each class possesses distinguished characteristics and in particular has different time vs. space behavior. We emphasize the dependence of both schemes on few graph parameters such as the treewidth, cycle-cutset, and (the pseudo-tree) height. We believe the principles outlined here would serve well in moving forward to approximation and anytime-based schemes. The target audience of this book is researchers and students in the artificial intelligence and machine learning area, and beyond.

Book Diary of a Yuppie

Download or read book Diary of a Yuppie written by Louis Auchincloss and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 1986-09-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this novel by the author of Honorable Men, a hot-shot corporate lawyer will sacrifice anything for success in 1980s Manhattan. Bob Service is a thirty-two-year-old crack lawyer with blood as cold and clear as a five-dollar martini. His god is power, and his morals are ever tempered by expediency. His goals far exceed an imminent partnership in a big New York law firm. Bob’s “perfect” marriage to Alice, a graceful and intelligent literary agent, is no match for the ardor of his corporate drive. And it certainly pales beside his explosive affair with Sylvia, whose naked ambition matches his own and whose social connections provide the ultimate bridge to the pinnacles of success. How Bob marches toward his fate while trampling on his associates and crippling his marriage forms the plot of this fast-paced novel about 1980s mores and life on the fast track of the big law firms. Office intrigue and duels for power rival anything that Machiavelli could have conjured up. And it all has an unnervingly authentic ring... Praise for Diary of a Yuppie “Absorbing and fun . . . It is refreshing to find characters who are willing to discuss the spiritual dimensions of their business decisions, the ethics of their trade.” —New York Times “Because greed and glory aren’t exclusive to Wall St.—Auchincloss turf—this most moral of fictions deserves a wide audience.” —Kirkus Reviews “This brief contemporary novel explores the ethics of loyalty in business, love, and friendship. Auchincloss, a prolific novelist of manners, is also a Wall Street attorney, and his shallow, ambitious characters ring true . . . [A] subtle, memorable book.” —Library Journal

Book Intelligent Image Processing in Prolog

Download or read book Intelligent Image Processing in Prolog written by Bruce G. Batchelor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a slow and somewhat tentative beginning, machine vision systems are now finding widespread use in industry. So far, there have been four clearly discernible phases in their development, based upon the types of images processed and how that processing is performed: (1) Binary (two level) images, processing in software (2) Grey-scale images, processing in software (3) Binary or grey-scale images processed in fast, special-purpose hardware (4) Coloured/multi-spectral images Third-generation vision systems are now commonplace, although a large number of binary and software-based grey-scale processing systems are still being sold. At the moment, colour image processing is commercially much less significant than the other three and this situation may well remain for some time, since many industrial artifacts are nearly monochrome and the use of colour increases the cost of the equipment significantly. A great deal of colour image processing is a straightforward extension of standard grey-scale methods. Industrial applications of machine vision systems can also be sub divided, this time into two main areas, which have largely retained distinct identities: (i) Automated Visual Inspection (A VI) (ii) Robot Vision (RV) This book is about a fifth generation of industrial vision systems, in which this distinction, based on applications, is blurred and the processing is marked by being much smarter (i. e. more "intelligent") than in the other four generations.
