Book Named Entities for Computational Linguistics

Download or read book Named Entities for Computational Linguistics written by Damien Nouvel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-02-08 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the challenges brought on by the digital revolution of the recent decades is the mechanism by which information carried by texts can be extracted in order to access its contents. The processing of named entities remains a very active area of research, which plays a central role in natural language processing technologies and their applications. Named entity recognition, a tool used in information extraction tasks, focuses on recognizing small pieces of information in order to extract information on a larger scale. The authors use written text and examples in French and English to present the necessary elements for the readers to familiarize themselves with the main concepts related to named entities and to discover the problems associated with them, as well as the methods available in practice for solving these issues.

Book excerpt: This book on Robust Speech Recognition and Understanding brings together many different aspects of the current research on automatic speech recognition and language understanding. The first four chapters address the task of voice activity detection which is considered an important issue for all speech recognition systems. The next chapters give several extensions to state-of-the-art HMM methods. Furthermore, a number of chapters particularly address the task of robust ASR under noisy conditions. Two chapters on the automatic recognition of a speaker's emotional state highlight the importance of natural speech understanding and interpretation in voice-driven systems. The last chapters of the book address the application of conversational systems on robots, as well as the autonomous acquisition of vocalization skills.

Book Natural Language Processing and Information Systems

Download or read book Natural Language Processing and Information Systems written by Mokrane Bouzeghoub and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes the papers presented at the fifth International Conference on Application of Natural Language to Information Systems (NLDB 2000) which was held in Versailles (France) on June 28-30. Following NLDB95 in Versailles, NLDB96 i n Amsterdam, NLDB97 i n Vancouver, and NLDB99 i n Klagenfurt, NLDB 2000 was a forum for exchanging new research results and trends on the benefits of integrating Natural Language resources in Information System Engineering. Since the first NLDB workshop in 1995 it has become apparent that each aspect of an information system life cycle may be improved by natural language techniques: database design (specification, validation, conflict resolution), database query languages, and application programming that use new software engineering research (natural language program specifications). As information systems are now evolving into the communication area, the term databases should be considered in the broader sense of information and communication systems. The main new trend in NLDB 2000 is related to the WEB wave: WEB querying, WEB answering, and information retrieval. Among 47 papers submitted from 18 countries, the program committee selected 29 papers to be presented during the conference. Besides these regular papers, two invited talks (given by Pr. Reind P. van de Riet and Pr. Maurice Gross), and a set of posters and demonstrations are also included in these proceedings.

Book Information Storage and Retrieval Systems

Download or read book Information Storage and Retrieval Systems written by Gerald J. Kowalski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-11-19 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 1 places into perspective a total Information Storage and Retrieval System. This perspective introduces new challenges to the problems that need to be theoretically addressed and commercially implemented. Ten years ago commercial implementation of the algorithms being developed was not realistic, allowing theoreticians to limit their focus to very specific areas. Bounding a problem is still essential in deriving theoretical results. But the commercialization and insertion of this technology into systems like the Internet that are widely being used changes the way problems are bounded. From a theoretical perspective, efficient scalability of algorithms to systems with gigabytes and terabytes of data, operating with minimal user search statement information, and making maximum use of all functional aspects of an information system need to be considered. The dissemination systems using persistent indexes or mail files to modify ranking algorithms and combining the search of structured information fields and free text into a consolidated weighted output are examples of potential new areas of investigation. The best way for the theoretician or the commercial developer to understand the importance of problems to be solved is to place them in the context of a total vision of a complete system. Understanding the differences between Digital Libraries and Information Retrieval Systems will add an additional dimension to the potential future development of systems. The collaborative aspects of digital libraries can be viewed as a new source of information that dynamically could interact with information retrieval techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on a workshop held on September 13, 2001 in New Orleans, LA, USA as part of the24thAnnualInternationalACMSIGIRConferenceon ResearchandDevelopmentinInformationRetrieval.Thetitleoftheworkshop was: “Information Retrieval Techniques for Speech Applications.” Interestinspeechapplicationsdatesbackanumberofdecades. However, it is only in the last few years that automatic speech recognition has left the con?nes of the basic research lab and become a viable commercial application. Speech recognition technology has now matured to the point where speech can be used to interact with automated phone systems, control computer programs, andevencreatememosanddocuments.Movingbeyondcomputercontroland dictation, speech recognition has the potential to dramatically change the way we create, capture, andstoreknowledge.Advancesinspeechrecognitiontechnology combined with ever decreasing storage costs and processors that double in power every eighteen months have set the stage for a whole new era of applications that treat speech in the same way that we currently treat text. The goal of this workshop was to explore the technical issues involved in a- lying information retrieval and text analysis technologies in the new application domainsenabledbyautomaticspeechrecognition.Thesepossibilitiesbringwith themanumberofissues,questions,andproblems.Speech-baseduserinterfaces create di?erent expectations for the end user, which in turn places di?erent - mands on the back-end systems that must interact with the user and interpret theuser’scommands.Speechrecognitionwillneverbeperfect,soanalyses- plied to the resulting transcripts must be robust in the face of recognition errors. The ability to capture speech and apply speech recognition on smaller, more - werful, pervasive devices suggests that text analysis and mining technologies can be applied in new domains never before considered.
