Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Reason in English Rhyme This rendering of 'Welsh Proverbs' was made by my father in the last few years of his life. Originally undertaken as an employment for leisure hours, the work grew under his hands, and it was finally his intention to translate all the 'Welsh Proverbs' together with such of the laws and Bardic aphorisms as seemed to embody and give expression to the national wisdom. In many cases the original meaning of the proverbs was hard to discover, owing to the quaintness of their diction and the obscurity of the illustrations by which they were expressed. The English Rhyme, therefore, does not profess to be a literal translation of the British Reason; it merely attempts to express the original sentiments in language as far as possible analogous to that used by the Welsh sages. My father had intended to write an introductory essay dealing with the subject as a whole, but at the time of his death this was only just commenced. This rendering of 'Welsh Proverbs' was made by my father in the last few years of his life. My father had intended to write an introductory essay dealing with the subject as a whole, but at the time of his death this was only just commenced. Until lately I have been prevented by other work from giving up the time necessary for correcting the press. As it is, my work has been much facilitated by the kindness of Professor Rhys, who has revised all the Welsh before it was finally sent to press, though where the Welsh is capable of various meanings he is not responsible for the rendering adopted. I am glad of this opportunity of gratefully acknowledging my indebtedness to him. -W. W. V., Brighton, 1889.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhyme and Reason My friend, I believe, is as nearly secure As anyone now is; at least I am sure That if merit can strengthen his tenure, he'll stay Till he wants to resign, or death takes him away. You'd like him, I'm sure, if you know him as I do, For he's one of the very few men you can tie to. Rare character? Yes, you're felicitous there. He is one of a class so remarkably rare That the newspapers speak of it often as non est, Being thoroughly, conscientiously honest; Not rough, like the commoner plain, blunt kind, But polished in manners, in speech refined; And yet a certain unconscious air Bids any who might presume beware Lest quick resentment should make them feel That under the polish is solid steel. Download or read book Imprinting Britain written by Michael Eamon and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Printing presses were instrumental in creating and upholding a sense of community during the eighteenth century. While the importance of print in the development of colonial America and the nascent United States is well-established, Imprinting Britain extends the historical discussion northward to explore the dynamic and interrelated world of newspapers, coffee houses, and theatre in the British imperial capitals of Halifax and Quebec City. Michael Eamon describes how an English-language colonial community coalesced around the printed word, establishing public spaces for colonists to propose, debate, and define their visions of an ideal society. Whereas American newspapers functioned as incubators of republican and revolutionary thought, their British North American counterparts featured a moderate discourse that rejected republicanism, favoured civic engagement, advocated liberty with propriety, extolled democracy under monarchy, promoted reason over superstition, and encouraged social criticism without revolution. The press also safeguarded against the uncertainties of colonial life by providing a steady stream of transatlantic news, literature, and fashion that helped construct a sense of Britishness in an environment rife with mixed loyalties. Imprinting Britain is the story of communities that turned to the press for a canon of British norms, literary touchstones, and Enlightenment-inspired ideas, which offered a blueprint for colonial growth and a sense of stability in an ever-changing, transatlantic milieu.

Book Rhyme Or Reason Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rhyme Or Reason Classic Reprint written by N. A. Fenwick and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhyme or Reason Clarence the writer of nimble topical verse in the Central Otago News, is a discovery. Up till now he has preserved the secret of his identity with remarkable success and there must have been much lively speculation among Central Otago readers as to who this skilful rhymer with such an uncanny knowledge of local events could be. A golfer only needed to make himself conspicuous, and Clarence sang about it; a fisherman only needed to let the big one get away, and there it was, the whole story, in black and white, told to a joyous lilt. Clarence again. Was it any wonder that a man began to look with suspicion at his neighbour? As a fellow writer of verse of sorts I admire the deftness and facility with which Mr Fenwick expresses himself in rhyme. He is a young writer who should go a long way with his peculiar gift of verse making, and I have no doubt that Central Otago people will in future years be able to look with pride on his achievements, for I am confident that this work is but a beginning. There is of course verse writing - and verse writing - but Nick Fenwick's verse is of a high order. It is not mere writing for the sake of achieving a rhyme; nor is it a mere striving after effect. Every stanza sails along with an artful lilt, every line scans, and every poem is written with a definite end in view. That, I think, is one of the secrets of humorous verse - there must be the sting in the tail, the poem must work to its appointed end. Nick Fenwick meets these demands perfectly. For these reasons, and because he has a natural sense of humour, and what is just as important in verse writing, a word sense, I think he will go a long way as a rhymer.
