Download or read book British Labour Management Industrial Welfare written by Robert Fitzgerald and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, this book examines company provision of welfare in the century preceding the Second World War, a period of enormous change in the structure and organisation of British industry and management. The creation of large-scale, corporate companies increased the need for settled, experienced company workforces and for adequate levels of industrial welfare. The paternalistic, frequently ad hoc methods associated with smaller firms were replaced with systematic schemes. This process is illustrated and discussed in 5 detailed case studies with supportive evidence from many other industries. Moreover, the political aspects of industrial welfare are not ignored. The role of employers in influencing the final form of social legislation for the benefit of their own company schemes is crucial to understanding the development of industrial welfare.

Book The Growth of Occupational Welfare in Britain

Download or read book The Growth of Occupational Welfare in Britain written by Alice Russell and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book identifies occupational welfare as a major component of personnel management. It identifies the long, still proceeding, evolutionary process of change which is leading to the harmonization of terms, benefits and employment conditions in British industry. It considers the traditional manual/non-manual workplace divide and the gradual change to a new core/peripheral workplace division in the modern industrial world. It is within core employment that harmonized conditions are becoming prevalent. British practice has evolved in response to prevailing economic, technological and labour market pressures rather than in emulation of American and Japanese companies in Britain.

Book The Marketization of Employment Services

Download or read book The Marketization of Employment Services written by Ian Greer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Europe, market mechanisms are spreading into areas where they did not exist before. In public administration, market governance is displacing other ways of coordinating public services. In social policy, the welfare state is retreating from its historic task of protecting citizens from the discipline of the market. In industrial relations, labor and management are negotiating with an eye to competitiveness, often against new non-union market players. What is marketization, and what are its effects? This book uses employment services in Denmark, Germany, and Great Britain as a window to explore the rise of market mechanisms. Based on more than 100 interviews with funders, managers, front-line workers, and others, the authors discuss the internal workings of these markets and the organizations that provide the services. This book gives readers new tools to analyse market competition and its effects. It provides a new conceptualization of the markets themselves, the dilemmas and tradeoffs that they generate, and the differing services and workplaces that result. It is aimed at students and researchers in the applied fields of social policy, public administration, and employment relations and has important implications for comparative political economy and welfare states.

Book Governing Risks in Modern Britain

Download or read book Governing Risks in Modern Britain written by Tom Crook and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 200 years, everyday life in Britain has been beset by a variety of dangers, from the mundane to the life-threatening. Governing Risks in Modern Britain focuses on the steps taken to manage these dangers and to prevent accidents since approximately 1800. It brings together cutting-edge research to help us understand the multiple and contested ways in which dangers have been governed. It demonstrates that the category of ‘risk’, broadly defined, provides a new means of historicising some key developments in British society. Chapters explore road safety and policing, environmental and technological dangers, and occupational health and safety. The book thus brings together practices and ideas previously treated in isolation, situating them in a common context of risk-related debates, dilemmas and difficulties. Doing so, it argues, advances our understanding of how modern British society has been governed and helps to set our risk-obsessed present in some much needed historical perspective.
