Like Wellington himself, Ross-Lewin came from a family of Anglo-Irish aristocrats. It was then perhaps inevitable he would enter the militia and subsequently transfer into the regular army. This was time of great military adventure and opportunity. Ross-Lewin saw the siege and fall of Copenhagen, took part in the battles Roleia and Vimiera, the assault on Flushing and the storming of the Salamanca forts where he was severely wounded. His Peninsular War continued with the unsuccessful siege of Burgos and the retreat that followed, Badajos and the battle of Orthes as the campaign rolled through the Pyrenees to its conclusion in Southern France and Napoleon's abdication. The 32nd were called to battle once again for the Belgian Campaign of 1815 as Napoleon sought to regain the imperial crown as part of Kempt's 8th Brigade. The brigade was heavily engaged at both Quatre Bras and Waterloo itself sustaining over 1300 casualties. This is a riveting and essential first hand account of the sharp end of Napoleonic warfare and no enthusiast of the period will wish it to be absent from their library. Book excerpt: After the Peace of Amiens was broken in 1803, Great Britain found herself at war with an old enemy (France) but also with a new competitor (Napoleon): the latter was the greatest military commander of his times, a man who was able to transform the French Army into the most lethal fighting machine of the early 19th century. The war experiences of 1793-1803 had not been very positive ones for the British Army; the latter was still recovering from the crushing defeats suffered during the American War of Independence and badly needed to be reformed in order to become more efficient and modern. At the turn of the new century, Great Britain was still the greatest colonial power of the world and could count on the most formidable navy of the world; on land, however, her army was too weak to confront the French one on almost equal terms. The British land forces did not have a great leader comparable to Napoleon and were still influenced by tactical models that had been outclassed by the events. During the Napoleonic Wars the British military apparatus did of its best to improve, especially thanks to the guidance of intelligent officers who belonged to a "new generation". These innovative and capable men reformed the British Army, by improving its standards of service and by creating a new relationship (based on mutual trust) with the men under their command. Wellington was the greatest of these officers and one of the few European generals who had the personal capabilities to contrast Napoleon in an effective way: it was him who "forged" the new British Army, by fighting against the French in the Iberian Peninsula during 1808-1814. After learning from experience, the British soldiers were finally able to face Napoleon on the Belgian fields of Waterloo and thus they wrote the last page of a glorious military epic. Waterloo, however, was just the final result of a long process.

It challenges the 'ruffians officered by gentlemen' theory of most military histories and demonstrates how service in the ranks was not confined to 'the scum of the earth' but included a cross section of 'respectable' working class men. Common soldiers represent a huge unstudied occupational group. They worked as artisans, servants and dealers, displaying pre-enlistment working class attitudes and evidencing low level class conflict in numerous ways. Soldiers continued as members of the working class after discharge, with military service forming one phase of their careers and overall life experience. After training, most common soldiers had time on their hands and were allowed to work at a wide variety of jobs, analysed here for the first time. Many serving soldiers continued to work as regimental tradesmen, or skilled artificers. Others worked as officers' servants or were allowed to run small businesses, providing goods and services to their comrades. Some, especially the Non Commissioned Officers who actually ran the army, forged extraordinary careers which surpassed any opportunities in civilian life. All the soldiers studied retained much of their working class way of life. This was evidenced in a contract culture similar to that of the civilian trade unions. Within disciplined boundaries, army life resulted in all sorts of low level class conflict. The book explores these by covering drinking, desertion, feigned illness, self harm, strikes and go-slows. It further describes mutinies, back chat, looting, fraternisation, foreign service, suicide and even the shooting of unpopular officers.

At the age of just fourteen years old, he joined the 43rd Regiment of Foot-a light infantry regiment. Soon he was engaged in the campaign against the Danes at Copenhagen, though this was merely a prelude to years of hard campaigning ahead. Soon Garrety found himself embarked for war-torn Spain arriving in time to join in with the retreat to Corunna under Moore and in the naval evacuation that concluded it. After a brief respite he was posted back to the Peninsula-under the command of the Duke of Wellington-and there he took part in many of the most famous battles and assaults of the campaign against Napoleon's French-including the horror that was Badajoz. as part of the 'Division' as its justifiably proud members termed themselves. Although he later reformed-becoming a Colour Sergeant, Garrety was a hard fighting, hard drinking soldier and his recollections of close combat make compulsive reading.
