Book Re searching Transitions in Indian History

Download or read book Re searching Transitions in Indian History written by Radhika Seshan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of transitions in Indian history emerged early when the term ‘transition’ denoted shifts from one period to another. The notion of transition itself has moved beyond being primarily economic to include dimensions of society, culture and ideology. This volume brings together scholarly works that re-examine and re-define the concept of transition by looking into a range of subjects including religion, culture, gender, caste and community networks, maritime and mercantile modes, ideas of nationalism and historiographies across geographical and temporal settings. With contributions by leading scholars from South Asia, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of ancient history, modern Indian history, sociology and social anthropology, and South Asian studies.

Book The State of Sovereignty

    Book Details:
  • Author : Douglas Howland
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 0253220165
  • Pages : 594 pages

Download or read book The State of Sovereignty written by Douglas Howland and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of Sovereignty examines how it came to pass that the nation-state became the prevailing form of governance in the world today. Spanning the 19th and 20th centuries and addressing colonization and decolonization around the globe, these essays argue that sovereignty is a set of historically contingent practices, and not something that accrues naturally to states. The contributors explore the different ways in which sovereign political forms have been defined and have defined themselves, placing recent debates about nations and national identity within a broader history of sovereignty, territory, and legality.

Book Sino British Negotiations and the Search for a Post War Settlement 1942 1949

Download or read book Sino British Negotiations and the Search for a Post War Settlement 1942 1949 written by Zhaodong Wang and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-03-21 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a systematic study of the China-Britain relationship during the 1942–1949 period with a particular focus on the two countries’ discussions over both the 1943 Sino-British treaty and the discarded Sino-British commercial treaty, the future of Hong Kong, and the political status of Tibet. These were dominated by two underlying themes: the elimination of the British imperialist position in China and the establishment of an equal and reciprocal bilateral relationship. The negotiations started promisingly in 1942–1943, but, by 1949, had failed to reach a satisfactory settlement. Behind the failure lay a complex set of domestic considerations and external factors, including the powerful infl uence of the United States. Even after seven decades, the failure still has a contemporary impact. Recent Sino-British disputes over the Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement and incessant Indo-Chinese confl icts and skirmishes over their unsettled borders all attest to the enduring legacy of the years 1942–1949 as setting the scene for subsequent Sino-British and Sino-Indian relations. From this perspective, the history has never left us.
