This Open Access book investigates European citizenship after Brexit, in light of the functionalist theory of citizenship. No matter its shape, Brexit will impact significantly on what has been labelled as one of the major achievements of EU integration: Citizenship of the Union. For the first time an automatic and collective lapse of status is observed. It is a form of involuntary loss of citizenship en masse, imposed by the automatic workings of the law on EU citizens of exclusively British nationality. It does not however create statelessness and it is likely to be tolerated under international law. This loss of citizenship is connected to a reduction of rights, affecting not solely the former Union citizens but also second country nationals in the United Kingdom and their family members. The status of European citizenship and connected rights are first presented. Chapter Two focuses on the legal uncertainty that afflicts second country nationals in the United Kingdom as well as British citizens, turning from expats to post-European third country nationals. Chapter Three describes the functionalist theory and delineates three ways in which it applies to Brexit. These three directions of inquiry are developed in the following chapters. Chapter Four focuses on the intension of Union citizenship: Which rights can be frozen? Chapter Five determines the extension of Union citizenship: Who gets to withdraw the status? The key finding is that while Member states are in principle free to revoke the status of Union citizen, former Member states are not unbounded in stripping Union citizens of their acquired territorial rights. Conclusions are drawn and policy-suggestions summed up in the final chapter.

Peaceful governance was nurtured by building economic collaboration and institutions and by establishing liberalism, democracy and the rule of law. In Asia, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) also pursued regional governance after WWII, but in East Asia, the American Divide and Rule policy is continuing until now by the influence of China, North Korea and Russia. In the contemporary world in the twenty-first century, a new nationalism, Populism and Authoritarianism are spreading. At the same time, a wave of rapid economic growth is occurring in developing countries, especially in China and India. Destabilization is spreading in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia concurrently with the search for “Democratization”. Through the two World Wars and the Cold War which originated in 100 years of the twentieth century, what types of regional institutions and governance have been developed to avoid endless wars and conflicts? In this book, it is examined, what kind of order is necessary to stabilize the regions from conflicts and wars in both Europe and Asia. The themes of the Tokyo Conferences and the Kyoto Conference by SCJ (Science Council of Japan) in December 2020, were investigated and clarified, how the countries that were caught up in global wars have considered regional coexistence in each period, and how to establish peace, stability, and prosperity by means of new institutionalizations, norms and the rule of law. India is one of the countries that would be affected by the economic rivalry. The paper uses a review method to determine the impact of Brexit on Indian companies both at the local and international level. It undertakes a review of some of the largest companies in India. These companies operate in industries that are bound to be affected by Brexit. Therefore, an analysis of the impact of Brexit on these companies would depict the impact of Brexit on India as a case study. The results of the paper show that India would have a positive net effect from Brexit regardless of the fact that Brexit may lead to losses in trade between the UK and India. As India is the source of FDI of the UK, Brexit would result in making other countries in the EU attractive destinations of the FDI. To avoid losing out, the UK would try harder to ensure that more capital comes from India. The UK may do this by wooing Indian companies to ensure they invest in the UK It may provide tax breaks and other incentives. Nevertheless, it is vital for India to form stronger ties with the EU since the UK has been India’s gateway to the EU. This will provide India with a wider access to the EU market. Loss of subsidies for EU students to study in the UK would necessitate the country to look for an alternative source of students. India is one of the markets that the UK would explore in the aftermath of Brexit.
