Book Understanding Statistical Analysis and Modeling

Download or read book Understanding Statistical Analysis and Modeling written by Robert Bruhl and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Statistical Analysis and Modeling is intended for graduate or advanced undergraduate students in the social, behavioral, or managerial sciences who may need to conduct some form of statistical analysis in their future professional lives, but who are not trained in mathematics. Robert Bruhl focuses on the logic of statistical analysis, rather than mathematical methods, and while formulas are introduced after the underlying logic has been explained, the exercises are performed in SPSS. A second feature of the book is the focus on modeling: statistical analysis is a tool that is used to answer a research question, and different questions will be answered by different statistics. Students come to understand why and how a particular set of phenomena are to be modeled, because those conceptual choices will determine the meaningfulness of the empirical questions posed and the interpretation of the statistics generated to address those questions. A third feature is the book's discussion of probability theory, and while this text is not intended to be a comprehensive course in the subject, the text introduces some important concepts necessary to understand the application of probability analysis to questions of statistical analysis. Chapter-ending exercises help students: construct a research question; obtain "observations" relative to that research question; choose an appropriate method of analysis; and interpret the analytical results in terms of the research question initially posed.

Book Italian Discourse

Download or read book Italian Discourse written by Gian Marco Farese and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the Natural Semantic Metalanguage methodology, Gian Marco Farese presents a comprehensive analysis of the most important Italian cultural keywords and cultural scripts that foreign learners and cultural outsiders need to know to become linguistically and culturally proficient in Italian. Farese focuses on the words and speech practices that are used most frequently in Italian discourse and that are uniquely Italian: both untranslatable into other languages and reflective of salient aspects of Italian culture and society. Italian Discourse: A Cultural Semantic Analysis sheds light on ways in which the Italian language is related to Italians’ character, values, and way of thinking, and it does so in contrastive perspective with English. Each chapter focuses on a cultural keyword, tracing the term through novels, plays, poems, and songs. Italian Discourse will be an important resource for anyone interested in Italian studies and Italian linguistics, as well as in semantics, cultural studies, linguistic anthropology, cognitive linguistics, intercultural communication, and translation.

Book excerpt: Fans of "A Few Good Men" and "Saving Private Ryan" will be drawn to this powerful story of courage, integrity, and valor in uniform. Alex Kramer, a prior-enlisted marine and a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, saved three gravely-wounded brothers during combat and was decorated for extraordinary valor. Now conflict confronts him after he takes unauthorized leave to prevent a suicide by a Marine whose life he had rescued under fire. Navy Lieutenant Tara Marcellus, an Academy graduate and submarine junior officer, has returned to Annapolis as a company officer. She meets the fearless midshipman who petitions Tara's sense of moral courage when senior officers recommend punishing Alex with the harshest sanction: separation. Alex's case triggers heated arguments at the Naval Academy's highest levels. He fiercely defends the code of honor he swore, and bled, to uphold; never leave a sailor or Marine behind. Tara deals with a major test of character: either take Alex's side with risks to her role, or do nothing and regret her silence. Together, the two young service members will stand up for a greater duty---for integrity---because it is honorable, despite any consequences that lie ahead for them.

Far from the dull duty he anticipates, John faces the challenges of a brave and untamed frontier while standing toe-to-toe against some of the Empires most ruthless enemies. Through his adventures, he discovers a good deal about his own history and sheds new light on the future of the Empire, while his own fate hangs ever in the balance. We, as a nation, have forgotten our history, and with it our identity. We have turned from our God and have lost our way. Without understanding our past, we are doomed to repeat our failures in the future. Galactic Ops was written to restore that which was lost. It aims to rekindle the spirit of our American history, deeply rooted in Christendom, and told through the gripping lens of science fiction. Book The Crouching Beast

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank Boccia
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2013-06-26
  • ISBN : 0786474394
  • Pages : 473 pages

Download or read book The Crouching Beast written by Frank Boccia and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a first lieutenant in Bravo Company of the Third Battalion, 187th Infantry, Frank Boccia led a platoon in two intense battles in the Vietnamese mountains in April and May 1969: Dong Ngai and the grinding, 11-day battle of Dong Ap Bia--the Mountain of the Crouching Beast, in Vietnamese, or Hamburger Hill as it is popularly known. The Rakkasans, the 3/187th, are the most highly decorated unit in the history of the United States Army, and two of those decorations were awarded for these two battles. This vivid account of the author's first seven months in Vietnam gives special attention to the events at Dong Ap Bia, following the hard-hit 3/187th hour by hour through its repeated assaults on the mountain, against an unseen enemy in an ideal defensive position. It also corrects several errors that have persisted in histories and official reports of the battle. Beyond describing his own experiences and reactions, the author writes, "I want to convey the real face of war, both its mindless carnage and its nobility of spirit. Above all, I want to convey what happened to both the casual reader and the military historian and make them aware of the extraordinary spirit of the men of First Platoon, Bravo Company. They were ordinary men doing extraordinary things."
