Download or read book Nonlinear Symmetries and Nonlinear Equations written by G. Gaeta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of (nonlinear) dift"erential equations was S. Lie's motivation when he created what is now known as Lie groups and Lie algebras; nevertheless, although Lie group and algebra theory flourished and was applied to a number of dift"erent physical situations -up to the point that a lot, if not most, of current fun damental elementary particles physics is actually (physical interpretation of) group theory -the application of symmetry methods to dift"erential equations remained a sleeping beauty for many, many years. The main reason for this lies probably in a fact that is quite clear to any beginner in the field. Namely, the formidable comple:rity ofthe (algebraic, not numerical!) computations involved in Lie method. I think this does not account completely for this oblivion: in other fields of Physics very hard analytical computations have been worked through; anyway, one easily understands that systems of dOlens of coupled PDEs do not seem very attractive, nor a very practical computational tool.

Download or read book Lyapunov Schmidt Methods in Nonlinear Analysis and Applications written by Nikolay Sidorov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concentrates on the branching solutions of nonlinear operator equations and the theory of degenerate operator-differential equations especially applicable to algorithmic analysis and nonlinear PDE's in mechanics and mathematical physics. The authors expound the recent result on the generalized eigen-value problem, the perturbation method, Schmidt's pseudo-inversion for regularization of linear and nonlinear problems in the branching theory and group methods in bifurcation theory. The book covers regular iterative methods in a neighborhood of branch points and the theory of differential-operator equations with a non-invertible operator in the main expression is constructed. Various recent results on theorems of existence are given including asymptotic, approximate and group methods.
Download or read book NMR Principles and Applications to Biomedical Research written by Jay W. Pettegrew and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is having an enormous liTIpact on biomedical research both at the basic science and clinical levels. In order to appreciate the elegance and power of this technology a historical perspective is in order. In 1924 Pauli suggested that hydrogen nuclei might possess a magnetic IIlOlllent. This was in fact confinned by Rabbi in 1939 who demonstrated that a beam of hydrogen molecules in the presence of a magnetic field could be mutated by radio frequency fields resonating at the Iarmor frequency. 'Ihe first successful NMR experiments in condensed matter were independently conducted in late 1945 by Purcell, Torrey and PoUnd and by Bloch, Hansen and Packard. 'Ihe Purcell group detected proton NMR in solid paraffin and the Bloch group detected proton in liquid water. Bloch and Purcell received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1952 for these observations . Until about 1952, studies of liquids and solids with broad resonance lines dominated the field of NMR. However, the reports of 3 1 P NMR chemical shifts in several corrpounds in 1949 by Khight, of 14 N resonances in several ions by Proctor and Yu in 1950, and of 1 9 F resonances in several corrpounds in 1950 by Dickinson led to the development of high resolution NMR in Itquids. since the molecular motions in liquids result in very narrow lines compared to those in solids, :much smaller chemical shifts could be detected.
Download or read book Pattern Formation in Biology Vision and Dynamics written by Alessandra Carbone and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half a billion years of evolution have turned the eye into an unbelievable pattern detector. Everything we perceive comes in delightful multicolored forms. Now, in the age of science, we want to comprehend what and why we see. Two dozen outstanding biologists, chemists, physicists, psychologists, computer scientists and mathematicians met at the Institut d'Hautes Etudes Scientifiques in Bures-sur-Yvette, France. They expounded their views on the physical, biological and physiological mechanisms creating the tapestry of patterns we see in molecules, plants, insects, seashells, and even the human brain. This volume comprises surveys of different aspects of pattern formation and recognition, and is aimed at the scientifically minded reader.

Download or read book Branching Morphogenesis written by Jamie Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-20 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Branching morphogenesis, the creation of branched structures in the body, is a key feature of animal and plant development. This book brings together, for the first time, expert researchers working on a variety of branching systems to present a state-of-the-art view of the mechanisms that control branching morphogenesis. Systems considered range from single cells, to blood vessel and drainage duct systems to entire body plans, and approaches range from observation through experiment to detailed biophysical modelling. The result is an integrated overview of branching.

Download or read book Symmetry Breaking for Compact Lie Groups written by Mike Field and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work comprises a general study of symmetry breaking for compact Lie groups in the context of equivariant bifurcation theory. We begin by extending the theory developed by Field and Richardson for absolutely irreducible representations of finite groups to general irreducible representations of compact Lie groups, while allowing for branches of relative equilibria and phenomena such as the Hopf bifurcation. We also present a general theory of determinacy for irreducible Lie group actions. We show that branching patterns for generic equivariant bifurcation problems defined on irreducible representations persist under perturbations by sufficiently high order non-equivariant terms.
Download or read book Nonlinear Evolution of Spatio Temporal Structures in Dissipative Continuous Systems written by F.H. Busse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers contributed to the NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Nonlinear Evolution of Spatio-Temporal Structures in Dissipative Continuous Systems" held in Streitberg, Fed. Rep. Germany, Sept. 24 through 30, 1989. The purpose of the rather long title has been to focus attention on a particularly fruitful direction of research within the broad field covered by terms like Nonlinear Dynamics or Non-Equilibrium Systems. After physicists have been occupied for several decades mainly with the microscopic structure of matter, recent years have witnessed a resurgence of interest in macroscopic patterns and dynamics. Research on these latter phenomena has not been dormant, of course, since fluid dynamicists interested in the origin of turbulence, meteorologists studying weather patterns and numerous other scientists have continued to advance the understanding of the structures relevant to their disciplines. The recent progress in the dynamics of nonl inear systems wi th few degrees of freedom and the discovery of universal laws such as the Feigenbaum scaling of period-doubling cascades has given rise to new hopes for the understanding of common principles underlying the spontaneous formation of structures in extended continuous systems.
