Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bookbinding for Amateurs: Being Descriptions of the Various Tools and Appliances Required and Minute Instructions for Their Effective Use Little prefatory remark is required in introducing this email book to the public. The present day is especially noticeable for the number of amateur workers who are found in every department of art and technics. That being so, there is certainly no branch of work better fitted to claim their time and attention than that of Bookbinding. It is of great antiquity, of the utmost utility, and capable of almost any degree of artistic development. Looking back to the birth and early history of literature, we find all the oldest manuscripts, both classical and oriental, were written on sheets of parchment or papyrus, and rolled up when not in use. The bookbinder of those days was simply a maker of circular cabinets or repositories, suitable for containing these rolls; and these cases, when for bibliophiles, were often beautifully ornamented. When and by whom the plan of folding the sheet of parchment or paper into pages, and stitching sheets together at the back, was first introduced, is not exactly known; but at that time, and not till then, the book sprang into existence. This new back required the bookbinder as we know him now; and at the very outset of the trade, his work, though entirely different to the bibliopegistic productions of the present day, was elaborate and beautiful. The whole subsequent history of bookbinding has done credit to its brilliant beginning. There are many good reasons for commending this craft to the attention of amateurs, amongst which we will enumerate a few. First, it does not require any great strength or mechanical aptitude. Secondly, the plant is not expensive. Thirdly, it can be pursued anywhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bookbinding, and the Care of Books: A Handbook for Amateurs, Bookbinders Librarians It IS no exaggeration to say that ninety per cent. Of the books bound in leather during the last thirty years will need re binding during the next thirty. The immense expense involved must be a very serious drag on the usefulness of libra ries; and as rebinding is always to some extent damaging to the leaves of a book, it is not only on account of the expense that the necessity for it is to be regretted. The reasons that have led to the pro duction in modern times of bindings that fail to last for a reasonable time, are two fold. The materials are badly selected or prepared, and the method of binding is faulty. Another factor in the decay of bindings, both Old and new, is the bad conditions under which they are Often kept. Book excerpt: Bookbinding, and the Care of Books A Handbook for Amateurs Bookbinders & Librarians Douglas Cockerell Douglas Bennett Cockerell (1870-1945) was a British bookbinder who revolutionised modern bookbinding. At fifteen he went to Canada and worked as a farm hand, a wool carder, and a bank clerk. In 1891 he returned to England and was introduced to the book arts by his brother Sydney, a British museum curator, collector, and well-connected figure in the literary world and the private secretary to William Morris. In 1893, Douglas was apprenticed to Thomas J. Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Bindery. There he learned the importance of combining quality materials with technical skill and creativity. He founded his own bindery in London in 1897 and took up a teaching position at the London County Council Central School of Arts and Crafts. His works include: Bookbinding, and the Care of Books (1901), Some Notes on Bookbinding (1929) and Bookbinding as a School Subject (1939).
