Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honouring the memory of the late Bernard Stiegler, this edited collection presents a broad spectrum of contributions that provide a complex and coherently articulated image of Stiegler's thought which reached beyond the boundaries of academic, artistic and experimental techno-scientific enclaves where it had been originally received. Stiegler's philosophical work encompassed theorization, social diagnosis, planning, practical and territorial experimentation, politics, and aesthetics. In its wake, the essays in this volume celebrate and explore the wealth of this multi-dimensional legacy. They examine the conditions of human life in general, its foundational intermittence, and carry forward Stiegler's post-phenomenological unfolding of the distinctive spatio-temporalities that weave together the epoch we call 'present'. Engaging closely with Stiegler's original impetus for the creation of technologies of care, as well as of communities of knowledge and artistic practice,

Book Philosophies of Technologies

Download or read book Philosophies of Technologies written by Valerie Charolles and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the space of a century, technologies have acquired unprecedented power. The result of these developments is a new form of the world. These transformations test our capacities and generate new crises with multiple issues at stake. Drawing on the lessons of a long history, Philosophies of Technologies examines the continuities and disruptions brought about by the power of contemporary technical systems, without reducing them to the digital age. It draws together 13 authors from different schools of thought and proposes tools that combine productive technology with sustainability, innovation and responsibility. This book wagers that, in the face of the sprawling and ever-changing deployment of technologies, philosophy is able to respond to the changes that offer so many opportunities to shape our future. Today, technologies need a philosophical moment.

Book Aristotle s Moral Realism Reconsidered

Download or read book Aristotle s Moral Realism Reconsidered written by Pavlos Kontos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book elaborates a moral realism of phenomenological inspiration by introducing the idea that moral experience, primordially, constitutes a perceptual grasp of actions and of their solid traces in the world. The main thesis is that, before any reference to values or to criteria about good and evil—that is, before any reference to specific ethical outlooks—one should explain the very materiality of what necessarily constitutes the ‘moral world’. These claims are substantiated by means of a text- centered interpretation of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics in dialogue with contemporary moral realism. The book concludes with a critique of Heidegger’s, Gadamer’s and Arendt’s approaches to Aristotle’s ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kant and Culture. Studies on Kant’s Philosophy of Culture is a collective volume focusing on the figure of Kant as Kulturphilosoph. The challenge of this volume, which gathers scholars who differ in language, method, approach and perspective, is to shed light from different angles on the relevance and complexity of a subject – Kant and culture – that has often been confined to the margins of the Kantforschung and has only recently received the attention it deserves. Yet, on closer inspection, the issues related to the notion of culture in Kant are so varied and at the same time so pervasive and transversal that they allow for important connections between his philosophical reflection’s different areas (from aesthetics to theoretical philosophy, from ethics to philosophy of history, from philosophy of law to moral philosophy, from anthropology to religion, from geography to pedagogy), providing a privileged point of view to explore and understand his idea of a Bestimmung des Menschen. Moreover, Kant’s contribution to the philosophy of culture offers important insights into its contemporary crisis, its loss of significance and interest. A starting point to try to articulate a notion of culture in a normative sense, that is, elaborated not in reference to a certain class of objects defined as cultural (education, the arts, the sciences), but formally, as a particular relationship we can establish with any object, subject or experience.
