Prior to field work, literature and databases were reviewed to compile a list of vascular plants already known to occur in Bluestone National Scenic River. Six hundred sixty-eight vascular plant taxa were identified during the 2003–2006 field surveys including 367 taxa not previously documented from the study area.

The three parks are in Mississippian and Pennsylvanian sedimentary geologic formations, the latter containing extensive coal deposits. The terrain is an ancient plateau that has been eroded into steep, sharply incised hills and valleys. The climate is continental with four distinct seasons, and the parks annually receive about 40 inches of precipitation.
