Many growers have turned to machine harvesters to pick blueberries for fresh markets as they reduce both harvesting and labor costs, but quality can be compromised due to mechanical impacts that result in fruit bruising, softness, and losses in fruit quality. New modified machine harvesters can improve fruit quality but must be implemented correctly. Regardless of whether a grower is machine or hand harvesting their blueberries, various pre- and postharvest factors are also critical to consider to maximize quality and food safety.
