Book excerpt: Early in the 21st Century, the Tryell Corporation advanced Robot evolution into the Nexus phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a Replicant. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and colonization of other planets. On Earth, Tyrell continued to experiment with further enhancements – because progress stops for no man. LAPD Detective Cal Moreaux has discovered that the suicide of Dr. Lydia Kine was actually an elaborate ruse constructed by the Tyrell Corp engineer so she could live freely as a Replicant named Asa. Dr. Kine’s latest experiment – the escaped Nexus 5 prototype – initially received the blame for her death, however Cal has discovered the truth – the identity of the Nexus 5’s host consciousness: his sister, Nia Moreaux. More existentially advanced than others, Nia has been “awakening” some Replicants in the slums of Los Angeles, causing them to leave their positions of servitude in pursuit of autonomy. Tyrell Corp executive, Ilora Stahl has been charged with the Nexus 5’s capture, and she will stop at nothing to protect her job and the company’s brand in spite of growing chaos. In desperation, Ilora launched an all-out attack against the Sectore-6B slums. Cal, Asa, and Nia raced to save the residents and together with Desiree, Marcus, and the survivors of Nia’s “awakened” Replicant followers sought refuge with Divina in the safe haven of La Plum Sauvage, only to find that it too had been destroyed by Ilora’s henchmen. Nia realized what she has to do to put a stop to all of this…

Book excerpt: Early in the 21st century, the Tyrell Corporation advanced Robot evolution into the Nexus phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a Replicant. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and colonization of other planets. Now, on Earth, the Nexus 4 Replicants have been adapted for societal elites to own for industry and service work. But, Tyrell continues to experiment with further enhancements – because progress stops for no man. The Nexus 5 has been “awakening” some Replicants, causing them to leave their positions of servitude in pursuit of autonomy. Cal has followed this trail of rebellion to Sector-6b, the slums of Los Angeles, once his home, where he learned the true identity of the escaped Nexus 5… his sister: Nia Moreaux. Desperate to atone for the wrongs he committed as Dr. Kine, Asa has followed one of these “awakened” Replicants, a murderous Nexus 4, to the slums in order to dispatch it. In his search for Nia, who is also looking for the deranged Nexus 4, Cal has arrived here too. Unfortunately for them all, Ilora Stahl is right on their tail…

Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor. Those who escaped to Earth were hunted by Blade Runner units ordered to kill any trespassing Replicant upon detection. The surviving Nexus 8 models disappeared with the help of the Replicant underground. Many Replicants remained in servitude. In 2027, Aahna “Ash” Ahsina, a former Blade Runner, rejoined the department to hunt down fugitive Replicants. Her superiors are unaware that her loyalties are divided. Her lover, Freysa, is a leader in the Replicant Underground. While investigating a report of a rogue Replicant, Ash discovered that a Nexus 6 Replicant, Yotun, whom she had failed to retire 12 years previously, had somehow outlived his expiration date and had become the leader of a Replicant guerrilla army. After capturing Ash, Yotun ordered his army to launch an all-out terrorist attack upon Los Angeles, destroying the newly constructed seawall, killing the city’s political and corporate elite, and ordering all Replicants in the city to revolt against their masters, before taking over the LAPD Tower and setting it ablaze. Freysa seemingly joined Yotun’s crusade in an effort to stop him, however, he blinded her in one eye and left her to die when he discovered her subterfuge. Escaping from Yotun’s clutches, Ash raced to rescue her lover from the burning building. Now reunited, Ash and Freysa have set off to find Yotun and bring him down. Meanwhile, Yotun, having incredibly outlived his initial inception date, has started to succumb to the ravages of time and is using the blood of his loyal supporters to stave off his impending demise…

Book The Closed World

  • Author : Paul N. Edwards
  • Publisher : MIT Press

  • ISBN : 9780262550284
  • Pages : 468 pages

Download or read book The Closed World written by Paul N. Edwards and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Closed World offers a radically new alternative to the canonical histories of computers and cognitive science. Arguing that we can make sense of computers as tools only when we simultaneously grasp their roles as metaphors and political icons, Paul Edwards shows how Cold War social and cultural contexts shaped emerging computer technology--and were transformed, in turn, by information machines. The Closed World explores three apparently disparate histories--the history of American global power, the history of computing machines, and the history of subjectivity in science and culture--through the lens of the American political imagination. In the process, it reveals intimate links between the military projects of the Cold War, the evolution of digital computers, and the origins of cybernetics, cognitive psychology, and artificial intelligence. Edwards begins by describing the emergence of a "closed-world discourse" of global surveillance and control through high-technology military power. The Cold War political goal of "containment" led to the SAGE continental air defense system, Rand Corporation studies of nuclear strategy, and the advanced technologies of the Vietnam War. These and other centralized, computerized military command and control projects--for containing world-scale conflicts--helped closed-world discourse dominate Cold War political decisions. Their apotheosis was the Reagan-era plan for a " Star Wars" space-based ballistic missile defense. Edwards then shows how these military projects helped computers become axial metaphors in psychological theory. Analyzing the Macy Conferences on cybernetics, the Harvard Psycho-Acoustic Laboratory, and the early history of artificial intelligence, he describes the formation of a "cyborg discourse." By constructing both human minds and artificial intelligences as information machines, cyborg discourse assisted in integrating people into the hyper-complex technological systems of the closed world. Finally, Edwards explores the cyborg as political identity in science fiction--from the disembodied, panoptic AI of 2001: A Space Odyssey, to the mechanical robots of Star Wars and the engineered biological androids of Blade Runner--where Information Age culture and subjectivity were both reflected and constructed.
