Download or read book Checked Out in Cherry Hills written by Paige Sleuth and published by Marla Bradeen. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You're never too old to be murdered . . . An unexpected floral delivery sparks panic when Kat Harper spies lilies within the mix. She's well aware that lilies kill cats, but she never dreams her decision to donate the lethal bouquet to a retirement home will thrust her into another murder investigation. That's exactly what happens though when one of the elderly residents is found dead shortly after Kat's arrival—and Eugenia Pierce's passing isn't from natural causes. With the surviving residents acting as though they're part of an unscripted Murder, She Wrote episode, Kat has her hands full trying to figure out "whodunit." Luckily, the amateur sleuth's tortoiseshell cat Matty proves to be a big hit in her undercover role as therapy animal. While the seniors are busy fawning over their four-legged visitor, they're also filling Kat in on all of the latest gossip, including Eugenia's romantic interest in the home's most eligible bachelor. But despite how the feisty widows may have been eager to eliminate their prime competition for the affections of the octogenarian "house hottie," they're not the only ones with motive. As it turns out, Eugenia exchanged some harsh words with the staff shortly before her death. And Kat can't discount Eugenia's daughter Ingrid either, not when the unemployed technology guru is due to inherit all of her mother's assets. The abundance of suspects won't deter Kat though. She's determined to figure out who, exactly, is guilty. And when she does, she'd better hope she doesn't become the next victim. Book Black Gold and Blackmail

Download or read book Black Gold and Blackmail written by Rosemary A. Kelanic and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Gold and Blackmail seeks to explain why great powers adopt such different strategies to protect their oil access from politically motivated disruptions. In extreme cases, such as Imperial Japan in 1941, great powers fought wars to grab oil territory in anticipation of a potential embargo by the Allies; in other instances, such as Germany in the early Nazi period, states chose relatively subdued measures like oil alliances or domestic policies to conserve oil. What accounts for this variation? Fundamentally, it is puzzling that great powers fear oil coercion at all because the global market makes oil sanctions very difficult to enforce. Rosemary A. Kelanic argues that two variables determine what strategy a great power will adopt: the petroleum deficit, which measures how much oil the state produces domestically compared to what it needs for its strategic objectives; and disruptibility, which estimates the susceptibility of a state's oil imports to military interdiction—that is, blockade. Because global markets undercut the effectiveness of oil sanctions, blockade is in practice the only true threat to great power oil access. That, combined with the devastating consequences of oil deprivation to a state's military power, explains why states fear oil coercion deeply despite the adaptive functions of the market. Together, these two variables predict a state's coercive vulnerability, which determines how willing the state will be to accept the costs and risks attendant on various potential strategies. Only those great powers with large deficits and highly disruptible imports will adopt the most extreme strategy: direct control of oil through territorial conquest.

Book Camden After the Fall

Download or read book Camden After the Fall written by Howard Gillette, Jr. and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-03 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What prevents cities whose economies have been devastated by the flight of human and monetary capital from returning to self-sufficiency? Looking at the cumulative effects of urban decline in the classic post-industrial city of Camden, New Jersey, historian Howard Gillette, Jr., probes the interaction of politics, economic restructuring, and racial bias to evaluate contemporary efforts at revitalization. In a sweeping analysis, Gillette identifies a number of related factors to explain this phenomenon, including the corrosive effects of concentrated poverty, environmental injustice, and a political bias that favors suburban amenity over urban reconstruction. Challenging popular perceptions that poor people are responsible for the untenable living conditions in which they find themselves, Gillette reveals how the effects of political decisions made over the past half century have combined with structural inequities to sustain and prolong a city's impoverishment. Even the most admirable efforts to rebuild neighborhoods through community development and the reinvention of downtowns as tourist destinations are inadequate solutions, Gillette argues. He maintains that only a concerted regional planning response—in which a city and suburbs cooperate—is capable of achieving true revitalization. Though such a response is mandated in Camden as part of an unprecedented state intervention, its success is still not assured, given the legacy of outside antagonism to the city and its residents. Deeply researched and forcefully argued, Camden After the Fall chronicles the history of the post-industrial American city and points toward a sustained urban revitalization strategy for the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “MY FATHER WAS A FRENCHMAN” is a collection of mystical short ‘story plays’ written for marionettes- containing a Vaudvillian flair, whimsey and Old World flavor. The artiste uses risqué humor, as she transforms adversities unfortunate experiences into fanciful follies! This introduction to ‘Urban Magical Realism’ portrays a juxtaposition between harsh reality and creative imagination- revealing serendipitous wonderment in inner city life. Gareth England chooses esoteric, short ‘story plays’ for those puppet-makers and puppeteers who still create and work with Old World marionettes- both in theatre groups and also playwrights- for their ‘play performances’. For England, the craft of string puppetry is truly still an artist(e)s’ treasure!

Book Who Lives Who Dies Who Decides

Download or read book Who Lives Who Dies Who Decides written by Sheldon Ekland-Olson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Decides? has been updated to consider the rising stakes for issues of life and death. Abortion, assisted dying, and capital punishment are among the most contentious issues in many societies and demand debate. Whose rights are protected? How do these rights and protections change over time and who makes those decisions? Based on the author’s award-winning and hugely popular undergraduate course at the University of Texas and highly recommended by Choice Magazine, this book explores the fundamentally sociological processes which underlie the quest for morality and justice in human societies. The Author’s goal is not to advocate any particular moral "high ground" but to shed light on the social movements and social processes which are at the root of these seemingly personal moral questions and to develop readers to develop their own opinions.
