Book excerpt: Excerpt from Black Diamonds: Gathered in the Darkey Homes of the South American Negroes this month are paying tribute to the memory of one who ranks with Lincoln and Washington in their hearts. He is Frederick Douglass, sturdy champion of the colored race who rose from the bonds of slavery to be the United States Minister to Haiti. His career is particularly an inspiration to the colored population of the Nations Capital. For in 1877 he was made a marshal of the District and died here in 1895. A building on the Howard University campus perpetuates his memory. A lesser man than Douglass might have surveyed the suffering of his people in the days between his birth in 1817 and the Civil War and cried out with Hamlet, "The time is out of joint; O cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right." Instead he faced his problem with courage and met the challenge of the situation. He escaped from slavery, taught himself to read and write, became an orator for an abolitionist society. Book Elderly Slaves of the Plantation South

Download or read book Elderly Slaves of the Plantation South written by Stacey K. Close and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elderly slaves contributed substantially to the creation and perpetuation of the unique African American culture and antebellum plantation society in the South. Interwoven with this major argument are two subthemes. One centers on the fact that by the late antebellum period elderly slaves were some of the chief transmitters of Africanism; the other focuses on how gender based distinctions of the elderly became blurred. Although the roles of the elderly often changed, elderly slaves contributed to the plantation economy. It is also true that those old people who were incapacitated posed serious economic and social concerns for owners, although many of the problems of elderly care were solved by the compassion of slave community members (Ph.D. Dissertation, The Ohio State University, 1992; revised with new preface and index)

Book Race Relations at the Margins

Download or read book Race Relations at the Margins written by Jeff Forret and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering a broad geographic scope from Virginia to South Carolina between 1820 and 1860, Jeff Forret scrutinizes relations among rural poor whites and slaves, a subject previously unexplored and certainly under-reported. Forret’s findings challenge historians’ long-held assumption that mutual violence and animosity characterized the two groups’ interactions; he reveals that while poor whites and slaves sometimes experienced bouts of hostility, often they worked or played in harmony and camaraderie. Race Relations at the Margins is remarkable for its focus on lower-class whites and their dealings with slaves outside the purview of the master. Race and class, Forret demonstrates, intersected in unique ways for those at the margins of southern society, challenging the belief that race created a social cohesion among whites regardless of economic status. As Forret makes apparent, colonial-era flexibility in race relations never entirely disappeared despite the institutionalization of slavery and the growing rigidity of color lines. His book offers a complex and nuanced picture of the shadowy world of slave–poor white interactions, demanding a refined understanding and new appreciation of the range of interracial associations in the Old South.

Book The Old South s Modern Worlds

Download or read book The Old South s Modern Worlds written by L. Diane Barnes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old South has traditionally been portrayed as an insular and backward-looking society. The Old South's Modern Worlds looks beyond this myth to identify some of the many ways that antebellum southerners were enmeshed in the modernizing trends of their time. The essays gathered in this volume not only tell unexpected narratives of the Old South, they also explore the compatibility of slavery-the defining feature of antebellum southern life-with cultural and material markers of modernity such as moral reform, cities, and industry. Considered as proponents of American manifest destiny, for example, antebellum southern politicians look more like nationalists and less like separatists. Though situated within distinct communities, Southerners'-white, black, and red-participated in and responded to movements global in scope and transformative in effect. The turmoil that changes in Asian and European agriculture wrought among southern staple producers shows the interconnections between seemingly isolated southern farms and markets in distant lands. Deprovincializing the antebellum South, The Old South's Modern Worlds illuminates a diverse region both shaped by and contributing to the complex transformations of the nineteenth-century world.
