Book An Investigation Into Lead Telluride Lead Sulfide Composites and Bismuth Tin Telluride Alloys for Thermoelectric Applications

Download or read book An Investigation Into Lead Telluride Lead Sulfide Composites and Bismuth Tin Telluride Alloys for Thermoelectric Applications written by Christopher M. Jaworski and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: With the global interest in cutting back dependence on non-renewable energy sources, the field of thermoelectricity has recently seen renewed interest. Additionally, several exciting breakthroughs in both nanoscale and bulk materials have led to increased figure of merit zT. Figure of merit is a indirect measurement of a material's thermoelectric efficiency; its ability to convert a thermal heat flux to electrical power, and vice versa. Material zT has been limited to approximately 1 since the 1950's; in the past decade there have been several reports of zT>1.4. The major drawback for the development of thermoelectric devices is historically low material efficiency. However, it has been predicted that only a zT=2 is necessary to reach widespread usage of thermoelectric materials. A high zT material requires high thermopower, low electrical resistivity, and low thermal conductivity. These three material parameters are all interrelated. Therefore, recent research has focused on decoupling these parameters from each other. In this thesis, the underlying theory that is necessary for characterizing thermoelectric materials is outlined. We investigate the zT increase in the material system PbTe-PbS that was achieved through nanoprecipitation of PbS rich regions in a bulk PbTe matrix. After performing a full galvanomagnetic and thermomagnetic characterization where electrical resistivity, Seebeck, Hall, and Nernst-Ettingshausen coefficients are measured we calculate Fermi level, carrier effective mass, and scattering parameter. The introduction of the second phase of PbS in PbTe does not lower the product S2[sigma] but is reported to reduce thermal conductivity. It is this decrease in thermal conductivity that leads to a gain in zT. The second system studied is Bi2Te3:Sn. It has been reported by Kulbachinskii that Sn possibly forms a resonant level in Bi2Te3, and in this thesis, we investigate this claim further. In order to do so, we calculate a Seebeck coefficient vs. carrier density (Pisarenko relation) for Bi2Te3 and confirm it with experimental and literature data. This relation is necessary to determine if one has modified the density of states of Bi2Te3 and increased thermopower over that of a similarly doped Bi2Te3 that has a normal energy dispersion relation. In addition to the galvanomagnetic and thermomagnetic measurements, Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) measurements are performed at 1.9K. There is conflicting literature on possible interpretations of the SdH measurements, we follow both interpretations and report the results. In summary, we conclude that by doping Bi2Te3 to higher carrier densities, we could begin to dope the lower valence band thus leading to an increase in zT.

Book Properties of Lead Bismuth Lead Tin Type Metal and Fusible Alloys Classic Reprint

Download or read book Properties of Lead Bismuth Lead Tin Type Metal and Fusible Alloys Classic Reprint written by J. G. Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Properties of Lead-Bismuth, Lead-Tin, Type Metal, and Fusible Alloys The experimental data show a gradual decrease of elongation with increasing bismuth content, then irregularity in the same region of the limit of solid solubility, and a final rise after the solid solubility is definitely exceeded. Elongation results on cast specimens tend to be irregular as they are influenced by minor imperfections in the castings to a greater degree than are either the tensile strength or hardness. The hardness data show an increase in hardness with increasing bismuth up to about 20 per cent, followed by practically constant values from 20 to 45 per cent, with a final rise at the end of the curve. Irregularities in the region of 30 and 35 per cent are not so pronounced as in the other curves. A few experiments on the susceptibility of these alloys to heat treat ment or to precipitation hardening were performed. Standard - inch test bars were examined in the following conditions: As cast; cast and aged at room temperature; quenched in ice water from 120° C. And pulled immediately; quenched in ice water and aged 24 hours; and annealed by heating to 1200 C. For two hours, fol lowed by slow cooling to room temperature. N 0 significant differ ences were established between the as cast and the cast and aged at room temperature specimens during periods of aging extending up to seven months. The results of the tensile strength determina tions on these heat-treated specimens are shown graphically in Fig ure 4. N o appreciable variation in results, below 35 per cent bismuth. Book Ferroelectric Materials and Ferroelectricity

Download or read book Ferroelectric Materials and Ferroelectricity written by T. F. Connolly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a joint effort of the Research Materials Information Center (RMIC) of the Solid State Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Libraries and Information Systems Center at Bell Telephone Laboratories (BTL) Murray Hill, N. J. The Research Materials Information Center has, since 1963, been answering inquiries on the avail ability, preparation, and properties of inorganic solid-state research materials. The preparation of bibliographies has been essential to this function, and the interest in ferroelectrics led to the compila tion of the journal and report literature on that subject. The 1962 book Ferroelectric Crystals, by Jona and Shirane, was taken as a cutoff point, and all papers through mid-1969 received by the Center have been included. The Libraries and Information Systems Center of BTL has, over a period of years, developed a proprie tary package of computer programs called BELDEX, which formats and generates indexes to biblio graphic material. This group therefore undertook to process RMIC's ferroelectric references by BELDEX so that both laboratories could have the benefit of an indexed basic bibliography in this important research area.

Book Ferroelectrics Literature Index

Download or read book Ferroelectrics Literature Index written by T. F. Connolly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.
