Book Birds of the Kansas City Region Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of the Kansas City Region Classic Reprint written by Harry Harris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the Kansas City Region There has been no list of the birds of the Kansas City region which local students of birds could consult. It is hoped that the present summary of an extensive study of the avifauna of Jackson County, Missouri, and vicinity, will be of service to local nature-study classes, and to bird students in general. It is hoped also that it may stimulate that scientific interest in bird-study which is an active and powerful incentive to the growing movement for bird protection. No attempt has been made to furnish a means of identifying birds, since so many standard works covering this ground are available. A list of desirable books is given in the text. The nomenclature used is that of the American Ornithologists' Union Che-ck List. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Swope Park: In the Heart of America, Kansas City, Mo Living at the very border of Swope Park, Kansas City, Mo., I have opportunity for making frequent excursions into its remote regions as well as opportunity for viewing the crowds and attractions of its more frequented portions. I have mingled with the thousands of human beings that thronged to view some attractions staged for the entertainment or edu cation of the populace. Again, I have wandered for hours all alone in the various parts of the Park, and thus have been able to see certain beauties and attractions in this magnificent playground that those who mingle only With the crowds fail to see, or those who journey only in motor cars fail to hear. With no reflection on the pleasures of the picnic crowd or on the value of the artificial attractions that are brought to the Park, I have frequently felt that the public generally, failed to realize some of the natural. Beauties and items of interest that this great Park holds in store for the nature lover who has learned to read the wonders of Nature's ways and who has realized the solace of her secrets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Revised Catalogue of the Birds of Kansas: Compliments of the Author In addition to the description of the nests and eggs of the birds, I have given their times of arrival, and the earliest nests with eggs no ticed. The breeding season, however, does not really commence until a little later; and as the State is four hundred miles east and west, and rises from an elevation of about seven hundred and fifty feet to one of about four thousand feet, the times of their arrival must necessarily cover a greater period than would be given to a single locality. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directory to the Bird-Life of Kansas This directory summarizes several kinds Of information concern ing birds of Kansas, and of mid-continental North America, and has two functions. First, it tells Something about the natural his tory of the 379 species of birds of Kansas. Second, it can help students of some kinds of birds, or of some aspect of natural history, to find out how much is known about their problem, and can Show to what extent, and frequently in what direction, further work will be useful. For instance, it can be deduced that studies on the population ecology of the Eastern Kingbird and on the behavior of the Mourning Dove, both abundant birds in our area, are needed. Also, it will be seen that we do not know exactly how many kinds of birds breed in Kansas, a matter of immediate concern in the following account. The Museum of Natural History at The University of Kansas solicits selected specimens and information that contribute to our knowledge of birds in Kansas. Donors of such material will join an already large group of persons who have contributed information, specimens, and time toward the preparation of this Directory. Chief among these is Dr. Harrison B. Tordofi', around whose Check-list of the birds of Kansas (1956) the present Directory has been elab orated; he generously made available for use in the Directory notes and comments that he had intended to use in bringing his Check list up to date. Prof. E. Raymond Hall, Dr. John William Hardy, Mrs. Lorelei Johnston, Dr. Robert M. Mengel and Mr. Max C. Thompson helped to improve a late version of the manuscript. The names of the many other persons who have helped, primarily by providing records of nesting activities, appear in the paragraph below. Byron Leonard, Robert W. Wilson This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
