Book Algal Bioregenerative Systems

Download or read book Algal Bioregenerative Systems written by Richard L. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algae may be used for partial regeneration of man's requirements for life in a closed environment. Feasibility has been demonstrated with model systems, but established principles of algal metabolism impose severe restrictions on the design of thermodynamically efficient, low-volume and low-weight algal gas exchangers.

Book Bioregenerative Engineering

Download or read book Bioregenerative Engineering written by Shu Q. Liu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-04-06 with total page 1106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique, comprehensive reference that integrates the molecular, cellular, physiological, pathological, and engineering aspects of regenerative processes Bioregenerative engineering is an emerging discipline based on applying engineering principles and technologies to regenerative medicine. It induces, modulates, enhances, and/or controls regenerative processes by using engineering approaches to improve the restoration of the structure and function of disordered or lost molecules, cells, tissues, and organs. This reference systematically summarizes bioregenerative engineering principles, technologies, and current research to help scientists understand biological regeneration and design new therapeutic strategies. Succinct and well-organized with a detailed table of contents to help readers pinpoint information, this reference: * Provides the fundamental theory and principles of molecular, cellular, and tissue regenerative engineering concurrently with experimental approaches * Presents the foundations of bioregenerative engineering, encompassing the molecular basis, the regulatory mechanism of regeneration, and the developmental aspects * Combines molecular and cell biology with potential applications * Addresses experimental design, methods, and modeling at the molecular/cellular/tissue levels * Covers the general mechanisms and technologies of bioregenerative engineering, as well as its application to the treatment of human disorders * Discusses the engineering tests and therapies for major organ systems Presenting an in-depth introduction to the biological and engineering aspects of the field and an up-to-date overview of current research, this is a one-of-a-kind resource for scientific researchers and medical practitioners, as well as for graduate and undergraduate students in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, chemical engineering, molecular biology, and cell biology.

Book Man Made Closed Ecological Systems

Download or read book Man Made Closed Ecological Systems written by J.I. Gitelson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-12-26 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a broad historical perspective, this book explores the interactions between humans, microorganisms, and plants in a closed habitat, and the life support systems necessary to maintain habitability over long periods of time. Topics include the cultivation of bacteria, microalgae and higher plants; the use of biotechnology to support life outside the Earth's biosphere; methods for recycling air, water and food for human consumption; interactions between humans and other organisms in CMESs; and methods for intensifying the level of photosynthesis. In addition to space the authors investigate problems associated with living conditions in dangerous or difficult environmental areas on Earth such as the Arctic and Antarctica, deserts and mountains.

Book Advanced Technology for Human Support in Space

Download or read book Advanced Technology for Human Support in Space written by Committee on Advanced Technology for Human Support in Space and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-07-16 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Technology for Human Support in Space was written in response to a request from NASA's Office of Life and Microgravity Sciences and Applications (OLMSA) to evaluate its Advanced Human Support Technology Program. This report reviews the four major areas of the program: advanced life support (ALS), environmental monitoring and control (EMC), extravehicular activities (EVA), and space human factors (SHF). The focus of this program is on long-term technology development applicable to future human long-duration space missions, such as for a hypothetical new mission to the Moon or Mars.

Book Atmosphere in Space Cabins and Closed Environments

Download or read book Atmosphere in Space Cabins and Closed Environments written by Karl Kammermeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MANNED SPACE FLIGHT introduces into space travel parameters that are unique. Man can live without food for a reasonably long period; without water, the period becomes quite a bit shorter; but without air, the result-almost instantaneous-is death. This would make the atmosphere the most important consideration. In fact, however, man needs all three components: oxygen, water, and food; and if anyone of them failS, he is doomed. With our space efforts approaching trips of several weeks in length and certainly heading for month-long journeys, it is most appropriate to ask: Are we ready to provide an adequate atmo spheric milieu for the astronauts? The present volume represents the first integrated attempt to answer this question on a scientific level and on a broad basis of physical and mechanical, biological, biochemical and medical factors. The main features of this work were presented at a symposium of the Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry of the American Chemical Society, held in Atlantic City on Septem ber 13, 1965. The volume is an expanded and reorganized treatise based on, but not merely proceeding from, the symposium. Obviously, medical aspects are of paramount importance. A down-to-earth appraisal of the status quo, presented by Dr. E. M. Roth, shows that the problem of 100% oxygen atmosphere still is beset with some uncertainty in the 200 to 500 mm. total cabin pressure range. Additionally, attention is called to inherent dangers of greatly increased flammability in such an atmosphere.
