Book Mercury in Fish Bed Sediment and Water from Streams Across the United States 1998 2005

Download or read book Mercury in Fish Bed Sediment and Water from Streams Across the United States 1998 2005 written by Barbara C. Scudder and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report on how mercury (Hg) was examined in top-predator fish, bed sediment, and water from streams that spanned regional and national gradients of Hg source strength and other factors thought to influence methylmercury bioaccum. Sampled settings include stream basins that were agr¿l, urbanized, undeveloped, and mined. Predator fish were targeted for collection, and composited samples of fish were analyzed for total Hg (THg), as most of the Hg found in fish tissue is MeHg. Samples of bed sediment and stream water were analyzed for THg, MeHg, and characteristics thought to affect Hg methylation, such as loss-on-ignition and acid-volatile sulfide in bed sediment, and pH, dissolved organic carbon, and dissolved sulfate in water. Book Water Pollution Issues and Developments

Download or read book Water Pollution Issues and Developments written by Sarah V. Thomas and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution is undesirable state of the natural environment being contaminated with harmful substances as a consequence of human activities so that the environment becomes harmful or unfit for living things; especially applicable to the contamination of soil, water, or the atmosphere by the discharge of harmful substances. In addition to the harm to living beings, both present or future and known or unknown, pollution cleanup and surveillance are enormous financial drains of the economies of the world. This book focuses on issues and developments critical for the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume collects population and metapopulation models for a wide variety of species, focusing on the use of models in population-level risk assessment for toxins. Each chapter of Demographic Toxicity describes the application of a population model to one species, with the aim of demonstrating how various life history characteristics of the species are incorporated into the model, how ecotoxicological impacts are modeled, and how the results of the model has been or can be used in risk assessment. The model in each chapter is implemented in RAMAS software, which uses matrix modeling of population dynamics. RAMAS software is believed to be the most powerful tool ever invented for this task.Demographic Toxicity includes a CD that contains a demo version of the program and the data files for each species. The book explains how to use these specific tools for modeling, analysis, and interpretation of data. Demographic Toxicity provides a major review of current knowledge on population dynamics in different species, representing both terrestrial and aquatic environments.

Book Biomonitoring of Environmental Status and Trends BEST Program Environmental Contaminants and Their Effects on Fish in the Mississippi River Basin

Download or read book Biomonitoring of Environmental Status and Trends BEST Program Environmental Contaminants and Their Effects on Fish in the Mississippi River Basin written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We collected examined and analyzed 1378 fish of 99 species from 47 sites in the Mississippi River basin (MRB) during 1995 and from a reference site in 1996. The sampling sites in the MRB represented National Contaminant Biomonitoring Program (NCBP) stations situated at key points on major rivers and National Water Quality Assessment Program (NAWQA) stations located on lower-order rivers and streams in the Eastern Iowa Basins (FIB) and Mississippi Embayment (MSE) Study Units. The reference site was the water supply system of the USGS-Leetown Science Center in rural Jefferson County WV Common carp (Cyprinus carpio; carp) and black basses (Micropterus spp., bass) the targeted species together represented 82% of the fish collected. Each fish was examined in the field for externally and internally visible gross lesions selected organs were weighed to compute various ponderal and organo-somatic indices and selected tissues and fluids were obtained and preserved for analysis of biomarkers. Fish health indicators included splenic macrophage aggregates lysozyme activity and hispathological anlysis of liver kidney and of liver tissues. Reproductive biomarkers included analysis of plasma concentrations of vitellogenin (vtg) and the sex steroid hormones 17beta-estradiol (E2) and 11-ketotestosterone (11- kt), and the histological determination of percent oocyte atresia (in female fish) and gonadal stage. Hepatic ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity was also measured. Composite samples of whole fish from each station were grouped by species and gender and analyzed for persistent organochlorine and elemental contaminants and for dioxin-like activity (TCDD-EQ) using the H411E rat hepatoma cell bioassay.
