Download or read book Modern Drug use written by R.D. Mann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (1493-1541), commonly called Paracelsus, was both one of the most original medical thinkers of the sixteenth century and was the man who made opium (as laudanum), arsenic, copper sulphate, iron, lead, mercury, potassium sulphate, and sulphur part of the pharmacopoeia. A man of many parts, but a pioneer chemist, Paracelsus can be regarded as the originator of a body of work which was the precursor of chemical pharmacology and therapeutics. To no small extent he stands, therefore, as a father figure of the modern pharmaceutical industry. Today's physician who wants to look at that industry since the days of Paracelsus and weigh the great gains against the problems soon encounters difficulties. To diminish them, this Enquiry approaches its subject from historical principles. This gives increased perspective to questions asked late in the boo- these questions being prompted by medical practice outside the industry and some twenty years of drug development activity within it. In antiquity medicines often seem to have been used as part of magic and primitive man thought disease to be due to supernatural forces which he could influence. The legacy remains - and in trying to sort out what is rational in our use of drugs today we have to separate our small bits of science from the ancient magic and from modern commercial pressures and conditioning.

Book The Steric Factor in Medicinal Chemistry

Download or read book The Steric Factor in Medicinal Chemistry written by A.F. Casy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It is indeed the merit of Dr. Alan F. Casy to bring in these pages a clear and comprehensive view of medicinal stereochemistry, a discipline in which he has been active and successful for many years both as a teacher and a researcher. Written for graduate students and research workers in medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, this book will contribute significantly towards a better education of scientists by removing the fear of stereochemistry caused by ignorance, moderating the overconfidence of possible zealots, and outlining a broader context.'-from the foreword by Bernard Testa

Book Stereochemical Aspects of Drug Action and Disposition

Download or read book Stereochemical Aspects of Drug Action and Disposition written by Michel F. Eichelbaum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to guide and inspire drug researchers as they enter the 21st century. Stereochemistry is an essential dimension in pharmacology and should be understood as such by all drug researchers whatever their background. When used as probes or medicines, stereoisomeric drugs offer invaluable insights or innovative therapeutic strategies. The book spans the subject from the molecular to the clinical. The first section on chemical aspects contains chapters on chemical synthesis, analysis, natural products, chiral stability (racemezation) and physical properties. The second section is on experimental pharmacology, with chapters on drug-receptor interactions, chiral recognition, ion channels, and molecular toxicology. The third section focuses on drug disposition, with chapters on absorption, distribution, protein binding, metabolism and elimination. The final section is dedicated to regulatory and clinical aspects.
