Partant du choc culturel qu'a represente l'ambassade de Carneade en 155 et se poursuivant jusqu'a la fin de l'epoque ciceronienne, cet ouvrage brosse le tableau des evolutions qu'ont connues durant cette periode les statuts successifs ou concomitants de l'ecrivain et de l'ecrit, la hierarchisation des oeuvres et des genres, la nature du lectorat qu'il faut voir comme un co-auteur ou co-acteur de l'oeuvre. L'etude proposee montre en particulier combien les evenements historiques, les mutations societales, l'evolution des mentalites ont modifie le rapport a l'ecriture et a l'ecrit des auteurs et des lecteurs, la maniere de concevoir des discours, des ouvrages historiques, des traites, des poemes et des pieces de theatre. Pour cette enquete, les oeuvres perdues et les oeuvres conservees ont ete traitees, autant que faire se peut, a egalite, les analyses litteraires ont ete conjuguees a des analyses sociologiques et historico-politiques qui interesseront, au-dela des specialistes de litterature antique, de philologie, d'histoire romaine, un public large d'etudiants de Lettres et d'Histoire ancienne. Il convient de lire cet ouvrage non comme une histoire de la litterature latine qui viendrait s'ajouter a tant d'autres, mais comme une histoire des ecrivains qui ont fait, dans les deux derniers siecles de la Republique, la litterature ecrite et ont ete les acteurs d'une veritable revolution culturelle.

The texts covered range from La Place de l’étoile (1968) through to La Petite Bijou (2001). Close textual analysis is combined with a theoretical approach based on current thinking in autobiography, biography, and reader-response. Modiano’s use of autofiction and biofiction is analysed in the light of his continuing obsession with both personal trauma and History, as well as his problematic relationship with his paternally-inherited Jewish links. His view of identity (of self and other) is thus discussed in relation to a particular literary and socio-historical context– French, postmodern, post-World War II, and post-Holocaust.

The starting point for this history is the eighteenth century when the term 'biography' first entered the French language and when the word 'literature' began to acquire its modern sense of writing marked by an aesthetic character. Arguing that the idea of literature is inherently open to revision and contestation, Ann Jefferson examines the way in which biographically-orientated texts have been engaged in questioning and revising definitions of literature. At the same time, she tracks the evolving forms of biographical writing in French culture, and proposes a reappraisal of biography in terms not only of its forms, but also of its functions. Although Ann Jefferson's book has powerful theoretical implications for both biography and the literary, it is first and foremost a history, offering a comprehensive new account of the development of French literature through this dual focus on the question of literature and on the relations between literature and biography. It offers original readings of major authors and texts in the light of these concerns, beginning with Rousseau and ending with 'life-writing' contemporary authors such as Pierre Michon and Jacques Roubaud. In other cases, they turned to another sort of genealogy and, blurring the lines between biography and autobiography, told the story of their parents’ lives. This volume includes ten essays on American, British and Canadian writers’ biographies and family histories, ranging, chronologically speaking, from Virginia Woolf’s Orlando (1928) to Lila Azam Zanganeh’s The Enchanter: Nabokov and Happiness (2011). The connection between biography and fiction is explored, and analysed in the light of different veins of postmodernism—ludic, nostalgic and subversive.
