Book Beyond the Boundaries of Childhood

Download or read book Beyond the Boundaries of Childhood written by Crystal Lynn Webster and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all that is known about the depth and breadth of African American history, we still understand surprisingly little about the lives of African American children, particularly those affected by northern emancipation. But hidden in institutional records, school primers and penmanship books, biographical sketches, and unpublished documents is a rich archive that reveals the social and affective worlds of northern Black children. Drawing evidence from the urban centers of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, Crystal Webster's innovative research yields a powerful new history of African American childhood before the Civil War. Webster argues that young African Americans were frequently left outside the nineteenth century's emerging constructions of both race and childhood. They were marginalized in the development of schooling, ignored in debates over child labor, and presumed to lack the inherent innocence ascribed to white children. But Webster shows that Black children nevertheless carved out physical and social space for play, for learning, and for their own aspirations. Reading her sources against the grain, Webster reveals a complex reality for antebellum Black children. Lacking societal status, they nevertheless found meaningful agency as historical actors, making the most of the limited freedoms and possibilities they enjoyed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While paratexts – among them headnotes, footnotes, or endnotes – have never been absent from American literature, the last two decades have seen an explosion of the phenomenon, including (mock) scholarly footnotes, to an extent that they seem to take over the text itself. In this Special Focus we shall attempt to find the reasons for this astonishing development. In our first (diachronic) section we shall explore such texts as might have fostered the present boom, from fictions by Edgar Allan Poe to Vladimir Nabokov to Mark Z. Danielewski. The second (synchronic) section, will concentrate on paratexts by David Foster Wallace, perhaps the “father” of the post-postmodern footnote, as well as those to be found in novels by Bennett Sims, Jennifer Egan and Junot Diaz, among others. It appears that, while paratexts definitely point to a high degree of self-reflexivity in the author, they equally draw attention to the textual and authorial functions of the works in which they exist. They can thus cause a reflection on the boundaries between genres like fiction, faction, and autobiography, as well as serving to highlight a host of pedagogical and social concerns that exist in the interstices between fiction and reality.

Book Cotton s Sketch Book

Download or read book Cotton s Sketch Book written by A. J. Cotton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton's Sketch-Book: Auto-Biographical Sketches of the Life, Labors, and Extensive Home Travels of Rev. A J. Cotton, in Short, Convenient Chapters Preface, indeed! Do you say - who cares for the preface? Introduce us at once to your little book. N ot quite so fast, my dear young readers. If you were about to erect a permanent edifice, would you not in the first place prepare a good substantial foundation for it? Well, then, what a foundation is to a building is the Pref ace to a book, don't you see it? No one of you would say to your Minister, don't delay and bother us with your text, let us have the sermon at once and be done with it; you would not say that, would you? True, the minister might say just as many pretty things without naming his text as with it. But it would profit you little; there would be neither point nor connection in it; it would be simply unmeaning, like one 'beating the air.' But when he gives out his text you have his theme, and with it a point of attraction, and know just how and where to apply everything as you pass along, don't you? The Preface is my text for my little 'sketch-book.' Here, then, we'll take an even start together, now that you have my start ing point and the theme of my pen. Paul's Gospel theme to the Gentiles was simply Christ and him crucified.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
