  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Bioenergetics written by Davor Juretic and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioenergetics deals with the very first energy transformation steps performed by living cells. Increased dissipation is the primary effect of processing external energy packages. Enzyme-supported charge separation is the minor but essential outcome for maintaining life. This book explores the usefulness of dissecting the entropy production of enzymes involved in cellular defenses, fermentation, respiration, and photosynthesis, assuming that tightly regulated dissipation is the hallmark of life. Researchers, educators, and students of life sciences can find in this text many examples of how we can use the interdisciplinary approach to study cells' virtuoso ability to connect the microscopic to the macroscopic world. Each chapter is a self-contained unit with a glossary and selected references for further reading.

Download or read book Principles of Bioenergetics written by Vladimir P. Skulachev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Bioenergetics summarizes one of the quickly growing branches of modern biochemistry. Bioenergetics concerns energy transductions occurring in living systems and this book pays special attention to molecular mechanisms of these processes. The main subject of the book is the "energy coupling membrane" which refers to inner membranes of intracellular organelles, for example, mitochondria and chloroplasts. Cellular cytoplasmic membranes where respiratory and photosynthetic energy transducers, as well as ion-transporting ATP-synthases (ATPases) are also part of this membrane. Significant attention is paid to the alternative function of mitochondria as generators of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that mediate programmed death of cells (apoptosis and necrosis) and organisms (phenoptosis). The latter process is considered as a key mechanism of aging which may be suppressed by mitochondria-targeted antioxidants.

Book Foundations of Bioenergetics

Download or read book Foundations of Bioenergetics written by Harold Morowitz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Bioenergetics provides an introduction to the physical foundations of bioenergetics and the methods of applying these constructs to biological problems. It combines parts of thermal physics, biochemistry, ecology, and cellular and organismic biology into a single coherent work. Much of the material in this volume comes from ""Entropy for Biologists,"" an introductory thermodynamics book aimed particularly at life scientists. Some of the topics originally appeared in the monograph ""Energy Flow in Biology."" The current volume expands on that material with respect to biological applications and attempts to bridge the gap between physics and biology. The book explains basic concepts such as energy, temperature, the second law of thermodynamics, entropy, information theory, and statistical mechanics. It discusses the relations between thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, free-energy functions, radiant energy, the free energy of cells and tissue, chemical kinetics, and cyclic flows. It examines the relationships between energy flows and biological processes; applications of the concepts of Gibbs free energy, chemical potential, and activity; and measurements of temperature, energy, and thermochemical quantities. The book also includes chapters that deal with irreversible dynamics, irreversible theory, and osmotic flow.

This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wanted to know more about the subtle energies of your body; what they are, what they do, and how to work with them? Have you ever wondered what a meridian, chakra or aura is? Have you ever noticed that some people or places seem to drain your energy or leave you in a bad mood, while others do not?As time goes on, people are becoming more aware that there's much more to our body and being than just the physical part. Like the physical aspect, our body also has a subtle energetic aspect to it that has systems and parts that perform specific functions. Although often unrecognized, this subtle energetic aspect of our being plays an important part in every aspect of our life. Because of this, it is crucial that we understand at least a little bit about how the subtle energetics of our body work, how they interface with our physical body, and how they interact with other subtle energies around us.In this book I talk about the subtle energetic flows, pools and emanations that form the basic bioenergetic systems of the body. I also talk about basic principles in working with and directing subtle energies, as well as some of the dynamics of subtle energetic interactions between us and other people and things. Additionally, discuss concepts and methods of fortifying and stabilizing our body's subtle energies, how to energetically clear and maintain a space, and other necessary related topics.

Book The Spirituality of the Body

Download or read book The Spirituality of the Body written by Alexander Lowen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Spirituality of the Body, Alexander Lowen provides a unique perspective about the nature of spirituality. Lowen views the body as the outer manifestation of the spirit and defines grace as the divine spirit acting within the body. For the healthy individual the divine spirit is experienced as the natural gracefulness of the body and is reflected in the person's behavior. In a healthy body, movement, feeling, and thinking are integrated in grace and harmony. This book includes body-psychotherapy techniques and exercises aimed at alleviating muscular tension and restoring the body's natural grace. This spiritual grace involves a sense of connectedness to a higher order. In this state of grace we feel a kinship with all living creatures, and recognize our connection to our environment and to the world.

  • Author : Günter Schäfer
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-05-24
  • ISBN : 3540786228
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Bioenergetics written by Günter Schäfer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-24 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fermentation of sugar by cell-free yeast extracts was demonstrated more than a century ago by E. Buchner (Nobel Prize 1907). Buchner’s observations put an end to previous animistic theories regarding cellular life. It became clear that metabolism and all cellular functions should be accessible to explication in chemical terms. Equally important for an understanding of living systems was the concept, explained in physical terms, that all living things could be cons- ered as energy converters [E. Schrödinger (Nobel Prize 1933)] which generate complexity at the expense of an increase in entropy in their environment. Bioenergetics was established as an essential branch of the biochemical sciences by the investigations into the chemistry of photosynthesis in i- lated plant organelles [O. Warburg (Nobel Prize 1931)] and by the discovery that mitochondria were the morphological equivalent that catalyzed cellular respiration. The ?eld of bioenergetics also encompasses a large variety of ad- tional processes such as the molecular mechanisms of muscle contraction, the structure and driving mechanisms of microbial ?agellar motors, the energetics of solute transport, the extrusion of macromolecules across membranes, the transformation of quanta of light into visual information and the maintenance of complex synaptic communications. There are many other examples which, in most cases, may perform secondary energy transformations, utilizing - ergy stored either in the cellular ATP pool or in electrochemical membrane potentials.
