Book Problems of the Biochemistry of the Nervous System

Download or read book Problems of the Biochemistry of the Nervous System written by A. V. Palladin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems of the Biochemistry of the Nervous System is a collection of papers presented at the Second Conference on the “Biochemistry of the Nervous System , organized by the Institute of Biochemistry of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences on February 12-16, 1957. The contributors consider particularly Soviet’s considerable research works in the field of functional biochemistry and the dynamic aspects of the biochemistry of the central nervous system. This text is organized into 11 parts encompassing 33 chapters, and begins with reviews on proteins and their metabolism in the brain and peripheral nerves; the effect of functional states such as excitation and inhibition upon them; and the changes occurring in their metabolism during growth. The succeeding parts contain articles about phosphorus-containing substances and methods of their investigation. These topics are followed by discussion of the chemical nature of a brain glycogen and its different fractions; carbohydrate metabolism during excitation and inhibition; and the adrenaline metabolism. Other parts tackle the ammonia metabolism, the developmental biochemistry of the brain, and the histochemical approach to study nucleoproteins of the neurons. The remaining parts deal with hypothermia and the cerebral metabolism in some pathological conditions. This book will prove useful to biochemists, biologists, and neurologists.

Book Biochemistry of Characterised Neurons

Download or read book Biochemistry of Characterised Neurons written by Neville N. Osborne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of Characterised Neurons provides a report on the progress made in the analysis of the biology of specific neurons in the central nervous system. This book emphasizes the biochemical, morphological, and functional aspects of characterized neurons, including ways and sophisticated techniques of isolating them. This publication is divided into 11 chapters. The first chapter evaluates the relevance of working with single neurons. Chapters 2 to 6 discuss specific, characterized, invertebrate neurons containing one of the putative neurotransmitter substances. Chapter 7 deals with the biochemistry of a unique vertebrate (Torpedo) cholinergic system that enables pure cholinergic neuronal cell bodies and endings to be analyzed separately. The sensitive radiochemical procedures used to analyze transmitter substances and transmitter enzymes, and how they can be adapted to map the distribution of transmitters in individual neurons of Aplysia, are discussed in Chapter 8. Chapter 9 describes methods for the analysis of specific cells in the retina, while Chapters 10 and 11 focus on the analysis of proteins within defined neurons. This text is beneficial to biochemists and students interested in analyzing neurons.

Book The Central Nervous System

Download or read book The Central Nervous System written by Per Brodal and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth edition finds the text of The Central Nervous System thoroughly updated and revised, better equipping students with essential information in the field of clinical neuroscience. This text, reviewed to reflect new information as well as understanding of student needs for critical thinking, contains the systematic, in-depth coverage of topics of great clinical interest. This text seamlessly integrates data from all fields of neuroscience as well as clinical neurology and psychology. This textbook presents the functional properties of clinically-relevant disorders by incorporating data from molecular biology to clinical neurology. Key Features of the Fifth Edition Include... ? Chapters knit together by numerous cross-references and explanations, helping the reader to connect data. ? Carefully selected full color line drawings of the complexities of the nervous system. ? Extensive use of text-boxes provides in-depth material without disturbing the flow of reading. ? Provides a crucial list of references for further reading. While most neurological textbooks are cobbled together by multiple authors on a variety of topics within the field, Dr. Brodal pulls together a cohesive and comprehensive guide to neuroscience. This book reflects Dr. Brodal's concise and easy-to-read style, encouraging reflection and critical thinking in established facts and scientific conjecture. This is the perfect reference for medical, graduate, and undergraduate students alike.

Book Biochemical Studies of CNS Receptors

Download or read book Biochemical Studies of CNS Receptors written by Leslie Iversen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now eight years since the first Handbook volumes on Basic Neuro pharmacology were published, and there have been many important advances. As in many other areas in science, progress in this field has depended to a considerable extent on the availability of new experimental methods, and Volume 15 reviews some major recent developments, including new autoradiographic techniques that allow direct visualization of drug and transmitter receptors in the nervous system, and the pin pointing of the precise locations of the changes in brain metabolism elicited by various drug treatments. Volume 16 and 17 cover two of the most active areas for basic research in psychopharmacology at the moment: the characterization of drug and transmitter receptors in brain by radioligand binding techniques, and studies of the role of small peptides in brain function. The latter area, in particular, illustrates how rapidly progress continues to be made in basic research on the mechanisms of chemical communication within the nervous system. Eight years ago when the Handbook first appeared none of the opioid peptides (enkephalins and endorphins) had yet been identified. Since then a whole new area of basic biological research has focused on these substances, and in addition we know of more than thirty other neuropeptides with putative eNS trans mitter functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has any contact with mental patients, old or young, or their families, or just visits a mental hospital or school for the retarded, is aware of the tremendous suffering caused by malfunctioning of the brain. The func tion of no other organ is so crucial for our everyday life, our proper func tioning, indeed our happiness, and no other illness causes as much anguish to patients or their families as mental illness. It is surprising and sad, therefore, how little effort has been devoted to research in this area; more so because such research is the only hope to ameliorate this suffering, or, to speak in the language of politics or economics, to decrease the enormous sums that we spend on trying to help our patients, with what is must generally be agreed are the most primitive and inadequate methods of treatment. Clearly, since functions of the brain are vital not only in illness, but in health, pathology is not the only area of concern to neurochemists, but it is an area that urgently needs neurochemical contributions. Progress in this field has been slower than in other areas of neurochemistry, and it seems that solutions in this field are very elusive. The reason for this is that the experimental approach is especially difficult in conditions specific for humans, or specific for complex behavior.
