Download or read book Russian Bible Wars written by Stephen K. Batalden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although biblical texts were known in Church Slavonic as early as the ninth century, translation of the Bible into Russian came about only in the nineteenth century. Modern scriptural translation generated major religious and cultural conflict within the Russian Orthodox church. The resulting divisions left church authority particularly vulnerable to political pressures exerted upon it in the twentieth century. Russian Bible Wars illuminates the fundamental issues of authority that have divided modern Russian religious culture. Set within the theoretical debate over secularization, the volume clarifies why the Russian Bible was issued relatively late and amidst great controversy. Stephen Batalden's study traces the development of biblical translation into Russian and of the 'Bible wars' that then occurred in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Russia. The annotated bibliography of the Russian Bible identifies the different editions and their publication history.

Download or read book Languages of Islam and Christianity in Post Soviet Russia written by Gulnaz Sibgatullina and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her book, Gulnaz Sibgatullina examines the intricate relationship of religion, identity and language-related beliefs against the background of socio-political changes in post-Soviet Russia. Focusing on the Russian and Tatar languages, she explores how they simultaneously serve the needs of both Muslims and Christians living in the country today. Mapping linguistic strategies of missionaries, converts and religious authorities, Sibgatullina demonstrates how sacred vocabulary in each of the languages is being contested by a variety of social actors, often with competing agendas. These linguistic collisions not only affect meanings of the religious lexicon in Tatar and Russian but also drive a gradual convergence of Russia's Islam and Christianity.

Download or read book An Anthology of Jewish Russian Literature Two Centuries of Dual Identity in Prose and Poetry written by Maxim D. Shrayer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 1186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive anthology gathers stories, essays, memoirs, excerpts from novels, and poems by more than 130 Jewish writers of the past two centuries who worked in the Russian language. It features writers of the tsarist, Soviet, and post-Soviet periods, both in Russia and in the great emigrations, representing styles and artistic movements from Romantic to Postmodern. The authors include figures who are not widely known today, as well as writers of world renown. Most of the works appear here for the first time in English or in new translations. The editor of the anthology, Maxim D. Shrayer of Boston College, is a leading authority on Jewish-Russian literature. The selections were chosen not simply on the basis of the author's background, but because each work illuminates questions of Jewish history, status, and identity. Each author is profiled in an essay describing the personal, cultural, and historical circumstances in which the writer worked, and individual works or groups of works are headnoted to provide further context. The anthology not only showcases a wide selection of individual works but also offers an encyclopedic history of Jewish-Russian culture. This handsome two-volume set is organized chronologically. The first volume spans the nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth century, and includes the editor's extensive introduction to the Jewish-Russian literary canon. The second volume covers the period from the death of Stalin to the present, and each volume includes a corresponding survey of Jewish-Russian history by John D. Klier of University College, London, as well as detailed bibliographies of historical and literary sources.

Download or read book Voices of Jewish Russian Literature written by Maxim D. Shrayer and published by Academic Studies PRess. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Maxim D. Shrayer, a leading specialist in Russia’s Jewish culture, this definitive anthology of major nineteenth- and twentieth-century fiction, nonfiction and poetry by eighty Jewish-Russian writers explores both timeless themes and specific tribulations of a people’s history. A living record of the rich and vibrant legacy of Russia’s Jews, this reader-friendly and comprehensive anthology features original English translations. In its selection and presentation, the anthology tilts in favor of human interest and readability. It is organized both chronologically and topically (e.g. “Seething Times: 1860s-1880s”; “Revolution and Emigration: 1920s-1930s”; “Late Soviet Empire and Collapse: 1960s-1990s”). A comprehensive headnote introduces each section. Individual selections have short essays containing information about the authors and the works that are relevant to the topic. The editor’s opening essay introduces the topic and relevant contexts at the beginning of the volume; the overview by the leading historian of Russian Jewry John D. Klier appears the end of the volume. Over 500,000 Russian-speaking Jews presently live in America and about 1 million in Israel, while only about 170,000 Jews remain in Russia. The great outflux of Jews from the former USSR and the post-Soviet states has changed the cultural habitat of world Jewry. A formidable force and a new Jewish Diaspora, Russian Jews are transforming the texture of daily life in the US and Canada, and Israel. A living memory, a space of survival and a record of success, Voice of Jewish-Russian Literature ensures the preservation and accessibility of the rich legacy of Russian-speaking Jews.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html Self-consciousness is the very objective being in its very essence, completely cleansed of everything particular and left only with itself. Consequently, there can be no illusions in him, there is nothing solely subjective in him: what is subjective in him is at the same time objective in him, because subjectivity itself is also objectivity, but in relation to itself. Thus, our self-awareness is as objective as the rest of our spiritual forces, in which all our unconscious mental changes take place. Meanwhile, the only difference is that the life of the unconscious soul consists of the relationship between it and the private objects surrounding it, and the life of self-consciousness consists of the attitude towards oneself. Unconscious being, subject to extraneous influence, can incorrectly reflect it in itself, changing it in accordance with its individual nature. Self-conscious being, entering into itself, cannot be wrong. If the relations between particular, influencing each other and reflected in each other objects can only be relations of a greater or lesser likeness, then the relation to oneself can only be identity. If similarity can have different degrees and, therefore, can change, then identity can only be one and, therefore, by its nature is unchanged absolutely authentic in the consciousness of its objective nature, being only the self-discovery of this latter.
